It's just another day, a boring day of high school followed by a boring walk home. Your parents are away on a business trip, so you have the place to yourself, which usually brings you joy. But at the moment, you don't really want to be alone.
Sometimes you want to have a friend.
The people at school think you're a freak. They want nothing to do with you, and you have no idea why except that your ex-friend spread a bunch of rumours about you. Some of them weren't true, but some rumours held a hint of truth.
You frown as you walk down the rain-beaten pavement. The melody of the raindrops blends with your even breathing, each exhalation creating a puff of condensation in the air.
The water gets in your hair and rolls down your face but you ignore it. Rain always seemed calming to you, a sort of cleansing of the earth that makes you feel serene.
"Hello!" A cheery voice interrupts your stupor.
You turn quickly to see a young man, about your age, smiling with a hand raised in greeting. Unsure if he's talking to you, you glance around and find yourself alone. Puzzled, you wave back, "Hi..."
He keeps smiling, his tan coat getting soaked by the rain.
"Can I help you?" You ask hesitantly. He looks nice enough, but you've always been wary of strangers.
"Uh, no. Well, maybe. I would like to get out of the rain." He says in a thoughtful voice, making the faintest trace of a smile form on your face.
You look around, spotting your house in the distance. It wouldn't be smart to let him in your house, so you decide to do something else.
"Are you hungry? I haven't had supper yet, and I know a good diner that has the best burgers." You suggest, surprisingly forward.
Something about this guy makes you feel at ease, which is unusual because of your tendency to be awkward and nervous around people.
His smile impossibly brightens, "That would be nice. I'm Jack."
"Y/n," you smile back, heading off to the diner.
You get to the diner and sit in the corner booth before ordering your favourite drink and two burgers and fries. Jack thanks the waitress before turning back to you.
"What were you doing in the rain?" He asks you, sounding concerned.
You shrug, "I was walking back from school. What were you doing?"
"I was looking for someone. A-a dream walker."
You freeze. No one, not even your parents know about your secret. You never told anyone. Well, anyone except for your mentor. He was teaching you how to get a better grip on your abilities.
"Really? You believe in that stuff?" You force your voice to remain steady and light.
Jack must have noticed though because his gaze intensifies. "You know something."
You gulp, "Well, I know a lot of things. Two plus two for example."
"Do you know where the dream walker is?"
"What would you do if you found them?"
"I need their help. You see, my friends lost someone important. She's in a different world."
Without thinking, you ask, "Which one?"
"You're the dream walker! How else would you know about the worlds?" He says it with a smile.
"What if I am?" You shrug, blushing underneath his grin.
"Will you help me?" He asks.
You look at him uncertainly. He seems nice enough, and he doesn't put off a threatening vibe. He needs help, and you might be able to help him.
Maybe this is what you wanted all along. A chance to do something good in this world.
You nod, "I'll help if I can."
He beams brightly, "Thank you, Y/n."
