two - "if you're a wizard, where's your lightning bolt scar?"
Mira walked briskly down the sidewalk while Thor tried to keep up. It was a cool New York morning. There weren't too many people on the streets, which she was thankful for.
"Mira, Mira!" Thor called. She stopped and let him catch up. For a god, he was a bit of a slow walker. Mira smiled to herself. "Where are we going?"
"A couple blocks down." She walked a bit slower and pulled the sweater sleeves over her hands. She had forgotten how much taller Thor was. "To Strange's house. Or Sanctum something. Or cool, magic, secret base. Either one of those."
"Who?"
"The guy with the fancy, swoosh-y cape."
"Is he some sort of hero of New York?" Mira shook her head and pointed to the left.
"Take a left here. And not really. I mean, kinda. He's a wizard," she explained. Thor looked confused.
"A what?"
"I mean, they prefer 'Mystic Arts Masters,'" she made air quotes, "or something along those lines, but yeah. They're wizards."
"There's more than one?"
"Only one in New York at the moment, and that is Doctor Stephen Strange. I like to call him 'that one weird neighbor who gives you free food but floats around on a magic cape.'" She made a motion of a sign in the air. Thor laughed.
"Is he with the Avengers?" he asked.
"Not that I know of. They'll probably call him up eventually. Tony called up this one kid from Queens to help him, so who knows?" Mira shrugged. They turned again and walked onto a street that was much less crowded. Tall apartment buildings were on each side.
"So...what happened to you these past years?" Thor asked, a little awkwardly. Mira thought.
"Well, Kaleb is four now!" She brightened. "And I left the team. Mostly because of Kal. And adult responsibilities. Adulting is hard."
"Ah."
"It just got really dangerous after Ultron. And...And David didn't want me to help them anymore." She looked at the ground while she walked and put her hands in the hoodie pocket.
"I'm sorry. Um...again," said Thor. He fidgeted with his umbrella. Mira looked up.
"It's fine." They reached the end of the street and Mira stopped.
In front of them was a large building squished between two apartment skyscrapers. A large plaque hung on the big wooden door: "177 Bleecker St. A, New York."
"Here we are! Don't bother knocking. The door's an illusion," Mira said matter-of-factly. Thor raised an eyebrow.
"How do you know where he lives?" he asked the Asian.
"I burn down the curtains here. It's like my weird hobby. Let's go in!" she said cheerfully. Mira walked through the door and felt all reality escape.
The inside of the Sanctum was very familiar to her. Mira had first heard of this "Strange" person more than a year ago, in October of 2016. She was trying to keep tabs on the Avengers and see what everyone was up to (in secret from her husband of course). Instead, she found out that there were curious events happening in a place nearby her new apartment, only a few blocks down. While investigating, Mira had accidentally walked through the front door and also accidently burned down the Sanctum's curtains. Thus began the friendship of Stephen Strange and Mira Lam. Well, it was more of a love-hate situation. Mira liked to tease the man about his "magic." There was much fighting at the beginning. However, he was there for her when David left and Kaleb seemed to enjoy his company, so Mira learned to cope with the strange man and his magical cape. The Sanctum became a sort of second home.
"Strange! I know you're here!" Mira and Thor walked around a open room filled with glass cabinets of foreign artifacts.
There was a big, round window with a special framing at the end of the room and a large staircase leading to a downstairs. They were both turned around when they heard a soft woosh. Mira rolled her eyes as they saw a dark and mysterious floating silhouette covering the window.
"Very nice, Stephen. You should be on Covergirl, you look so easy and breezy." Dr. Strange let out a laugh and landed on the ground effortlessly.
"Welcome Thor Odinson, god of thunder," Strange said, smiling. Thor eyed him suspiciously.
"You're the wizard?" Thor asked. Strange rolled his eyes.
"I'm assuming Mira told you about me?" he replied. Thor nodded slightly.
"A bit." The two men observed each other warily.
"Geez, there's so much tension," Mira interrupted. "Can we teleport or something now?" Strange ignored her.
"You can put down the umbrella," he pointed to Thor's umbrella. A stand appeared near their feet. Thor carefully looked at the stand and then put his umbrella in one of the openings.
Once the umbrella hit the ground, they were instantly teleported to the seemingly same room but with different furnishings. Thor steadied himself on the table in front of him, but Mira just laughed.
"You'll get used to it, buddy," she patted him on the back. He tried to regain his dignity and straightened. There were small diamond-shaped items in front of him on the table, and he carelessly picked one up. Mira and Strange each raised an eyebrow.
"So there are wizards in New York now," Thor chuckled and then threw the item back into its stand. He missed horribly and caused the whole thing to come apart. All the pieces fell onto the table with a clatter. Mira stifled a laugh, and Strange was unimpressed. Thor looked panicked and tried to place the objects back but continued to fail.
"Hey, if you're a wizard, where's your lightning bolt scar?" Mira whispered to Strange. He gave her a look. She shrugged. "Didn't you ever read the books?"
"No. I saw like one movie. The Chamber of Snakes or something."
"What?! That doesn't count! Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange, M.D-ph.D and famous neurosurgeon AND official wizard, has never read Harry Potte-"
"This is very off topic, Mira," he cut her off. She crossed her arms. "We'll have this conversation later!"
"Sure. You're just trying to cover up that you made a grave mistake by never reading the books and upsetting a strong Potterhead." There was another clatter from the table in front of them. They both looked at the god unsuccessfully fix the items. "Damn, he's more of a mess then me."
"That's giving him a lot of credit. Hey! It's fine, they're fine!" he said to Thor. Thor, embarrassed, put the pieces down and straightened up again. He cleared his throat.
"Yeah. Wizard," Thor added for emphasis. Mira grinned.
"I prefer the term 'Master of Mystic Arts,'" Strange clarified.
"Ah ha! I was close!" Mira whooped. They both looked at her. "Sorry sorry. Continue."
"Why should I care about you?" Thor asked boldly.
"Well, I have some questions for you. Take a seat." Strange waved his hand, and the trio were teleported into some cushiony seats in the same room but again with different furniture. Mira crossed her legs comfortably and began to scroll through her phone. Thor was still taken aback by all the teleporting. The Master of Mystic Arts sat in front of them in a big armchair that matched the colour of his cape.
"Can I have some grapes?" Mira asked. Strange gave her another look. "Pretty please?"
"What is up with you and grapes?" he asked as he waved a hand. Suddenly, there was a table in between Mira and Thor with a bowl of grapes. Mira brightened and popped one in her mouth.
"Thank you very much."
"Tea?" Strange asked Thor. Thor looked down to see he was holding a clay tea cup. He scoffed as he looked at the small cup.
"I don't drink tea."
"Well, that do you drink?" the other man asked.
"Not tea," Thor said, laughing.
"You all drink some crazy stuff in Asgard, huh?" Mira said. Thor nodded and then looked down in shock as he raised up a large beer glass. "Wow. That'll create a hell of a hangover." Thor shook his head.
"I don't get those. Whatever they are." He raised the glass up to his lips, testing the liquid.
"Lucky bastard."
"Language, Mira."
"You sound like Steve."
"Moving on," Strange cleared his throat. He put a finger on his temple. "So I keep a watchlist of individuals and beings from other realms that may be a threat to this world." Thor finished his glass and watched in surprise as it refilled itself. "And your adopted brother, Loki, is pretty high on the scale."
"A worthy inclusion," Thor replied. He wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
"And you brought him here because of your father?" Strange asked, shifting positions. The collar of his cape straightened by itself. Thor nodded.
"For our father."
"So if I were to tell you where Odin was, all parties concerned would return to Asgard promptly?"
"Promptly," Thor said, nodding again. Strange looked relieved.
"Great. Then I'll help you." Mira whooped once more.
"Father-son bonding time, here we come."
"What the hell, Mira..."
"I say what's on my mind, Strange. You should know this."
"If you knew where he was, why didn't you call me?" Thor asked suspiciously. Strange shook his head.
"I have to tell you, he was adamant of not being disturbed. Your father said he had chosen to remain in exile. And," he added, "you don't have a phone."
"No, I don't have a phone," scoffed Thor. "But you could have sent a raven or an electronic letter, called an e-mail?"
"Christ, how the heck do you communicate in Asgard without the internet..." muttered Mira.
"Yes, but do you have a computer?" Strange asked with a raised eyebrow. Thor shook his head.
"What for?" he asked. Mira facepalmed. "Anyways," Thor continued, "my father is no longer in exile, so if you could tell me where he is, I can take him home." He chugged the rest of the liquid in the glass down. Mira watched with a cocked eyebrow and ate another grape.
"Gladly." Strange stood up. "He's in Norway." Mira murmured a "that's random," and then the three were wooshed away again.
Before they knew it, the trio were in another room with bookshelves and yet more artifacts in glass cases. Thor steadied himself on a bookshelf, spilling some of his beer. The shelf swung dangerously under his weight. Mira ended up sitting on the floor, so she stood up and dusted off her pants. Strange flipped through a book at rapid speed.
"Whatcha lookin' at?" Mira asked innocently, trying to peer over his shoulder. She could never read the runes, but it was always worth a try.
"Just seeing if the incantation needs any Asgardian modifications." He went to one page and promptly shut the book. "Nope."
All of a sudden, they were teleported to another section of the house. Mira fell onto a table, and Thor continued to sway from the bookshelf.
"Ok ouch," Mira muttered, getting off the ornate tabletop. Strange looked over at the bookshelf.
"Oh we don't need those." There was another woosh, and they appeared in yet another room. This time, Thor put too much pressure on the shelf and it broke it in half, while Mira was winded into a wall.
"I'm starting to think you're hurting me on purpose, Strange," she rubbed her shoulder. The Doctor looked at her and shrugged, his eyes twinkling mischievously.
"I object."
"Uh huh," Mira replied, unfazed.
"Stop doing that!" Thor said, frustrated. He had accidentally broken another shelf by crashing into it. Mira patted his shoulder again.
"You gotta get used to it, man. It's just the STRANGE way he transports." She cackled at her own joke. Strange and Thor looked at her unimpressed. She laughed some more. "Ahhh I love puns. Carry on." She leaned on the wall with her arms crossed. Thor put his drink down on a table. Strange shook his head at Mira and walked over to the god.
"Hey c-can I just...uh I-I need a strand of your hair..." Thor narrowed his eyes.
"My hair is not to be meddled with-AH!" He yelped loudly as Strange pulled a blonde strand of hair from his head. Mira stifled a laugh and cleared her throat.
"Smooth, Strange. Real smooth." He nodded with a playful grin. Stephen twirled the hair in an interesting (and strange) motion. His hands slid together and opened outward smoothly.
Suddenly, the trio was transported once again. They reappeared on the downstairs level of the Sanctum. Mira and Strange landed on the carpeted floor, but Thor rolled down the last couple steps. He yelped loudly until he reached the ground. Mira laughed but then covered her mouth.
"You're so mean, Strange."
"Nicer than you."
"Hey! I'm a mother! It's called discipline!"
"Really? Burning curtains down is discipline?" Stephen asked. Mira shrugged. Thor interrupted.
"We could've walked," he said, a bit mad.
"Ah but Strange here is a wizard." Mira tapped her temple in a matter-of-factly manner. Strange rolled his eyes but finally made one more portal. It was large and framed in sparking yellow magic. The portal was quite big - room for more than one person to step in at the same time. Inside the magic, there was a view of beautiful green scenery sculpted with steep white cliffs and crystal waters. Mira whistled.
"Norway is gorgeous," she whispered. Being a long-time resident of New York City, she was impressed. Strange nodded in agreement.
"Well, there he is." The three looked into the windy waves for a moment. "He's waiting for you," Strange said to Thor. The god looked a little nervous.
"Alright," he sighed. Mira patted his back comfortingly.
"Um...do you need your umbrella?" she asked. He looked up.
"Oh right!" Thor stuck out a hand. In the background, sounds of glass smashing and objects being destroyed was heard. He winced a little bit at every bit of noise. "Sorry." Strange waved his hand absentmindedly. Finally, an umbrella flew out with one last CRASH and into Thor's hand. He brushed off debris from its cover. "I suppose I'll need my brother back."
"Oh yeah, here you go," Strange said, sounding a little annoyed at not being able to keep Loki as prisoner. He swirled his fingers near Thor, and another portal was made. It also was ringed in yellow magic, and the sound of someone yelling came nearer and nearer. Before they knew it, Loki, still in his all black suit, crash landed on the floor with a loud THUD.
Loki flipped his head back furiously. He looked pale but also mad. Very mad.
"I have been falling for thirty minutes!" he almost shouted. Mira laughed loudly, not bothering to cover herself.
"Aw sorry, pretty boy," she patted his shoulder. He shrugged her hand off, still mad.
"You can handle it from here," said Strange to Mira. She nodded.
"Thanks, Stephen. You're not as bad as you seem." She grinned. The Doctor smiled back and went to shake Thor's hand.
"Thank you for your help," Thor said gratefully. Strange nodded his head slightly.
"You're welcome." Loki suddenly stood up and looked around him in suspicion.
"Who are you?!" he said. He flicked out his wrists sharply, and two twin daggers appeared in his hands. "You think you're some kind of sorcerer?!" He still looked very mad. Mira got ready to unleash her whip in case of him attacking. "Don't think for a minute that you ca-"
"Alright bu-bye!" Strange said quickly. He waved his hand, and the magic portal swallowed up the three. Thor and Loki were transported with ease, but Mira ended up with her face in the dirt. She stood up and looked at the grass by her feet.
"HEY! STRANGE! This was not a part of the agreement!" she yelled at the sky. "He transported me too! Idiot sorcerer..." she muttered slightly. Thor and Loki exchanged glances but then saw a man standing at the edge of the cliff, looking over the blue waters.
"Father?"
