twenty-one
twenty-one - "for narni-i mean, for asgard!"
Mira was startled awake by Cora shaking her.
"Mira, Mira, look where we are!" she said with excitement. Mira groggily opened her eyes.
"All I see are stars," she mumbled. She rubbed her eyes more and looked out of the window, same as Bruce. Thor and Bruna woke up also.
"Is that what I think it is..." Cora's eyes grew wide towards the front. Mira remembered how Cora had never been outside of Sakaar. The Asian looked at the front window and gasped slightly.
"I never thought I'd be back here," Bruna said softly.
In front of them was a beautiful, huge city. The golden area was on a big floating island in space. Mira was amazed. She never even imagined to get to travel out of the US, much less to the fabled city of Asgard. The ship descended into the clouds, and Mira was very excited to see the rest of the royal buildings.
But then she saw the smoke.
"I thought it'd be nicer," Bruce said, also looking out of the window. "I mean, not that it's not nice. It's just...it's on fire."
The whole of Asgard was in flames. There seemed to be no people, and most of the residential buildings were crushed. Mira also saw piles of dead bodies.
"Hela is brutal," she murmured. The rest of them were silent in shock. Bruna pulled up a holographic map of Asgard.
"Here, up in the mountains," she said. She zoomed into some mountains, and they saw a group of red dots. "Heat signatures. People clustered together. Hela's coming for them."
"Ok," Thor said, thinking. "Drop me off at the palace, and I'll draw her away." They all stared at him.
"And get yourself killed?" Bruna raised an eyebrow.
"The people trapped down there are all that matters. While I'm dealing with Hela, I need you four to help get everyone off Asgard," explained the blonde.
"How the hell are we supposed to do that?" Bruce exclaimed.
"I have a man on the ground," Thor smiled. Mira facepalmed.
"How cinematic, Thor. You could be in a movie or something," she said sarcastically. "Ok now we need actual weapons on this plane. Because..." She looked at the rugs. "Ew."
A couple minutes later, Cora was in while Thor and Bruna hefted a massive Asgardian gun onto part of the side of the plane. Bruce paced while Mira sat next to Cora. They had landed the Commodore in a plaza near the palace, and Thor and Bruna had gotten some weapons from a nearby armoury.
"When did you learn how to fight?" she asked. Cora looked at her and shrugged.
"Bruna taught me a few moves on Sakaar once," she said. Mira laughed.
"That's cool," she said. "Maybe you could be an Avenger once we get back to my home."
"Avengers? Aren't they your old team of heroes?" Cora asked. Mira nodded.
"I miss them a lot. Thor coming back really reminded me of them all," she said. "I think once we get back, I'll join the team again. Kal can have a superhero mom again." She laughed.
"I found this in the armoury," Thor said to Bruna from the other side of the ship. The two women looked over to see what he was talking about. He handed the Valkyrie a bundle of white armour wrapped in blue cloth. The fabric was laced with gold and pearl plating, and Cora mumbled about how gorgeous the fabric was. Mira noticed Bruna stiffen a bit but then take the outfit.
"Is that something special?" Mira whispered.
"A Valkyrie uniform," Cora whispered back. "I didn't realise it would be so beautiful."
"Did you even know Bruna was an Asgardian?" Mira said. Cora shook her head.
"Not really because she tried to push away her past," said the redhead. "I never asked her about it. People come to Sakaar to forget."
"Oh right," Mira looked down.
"Cora! Fire up the jets!" Bruna called. Cora straightened up and pushed a button. The engines began to start. Mira ran over to see Thor before he left.
"Good luck, blondie!" she waved. He laughed and nodded.
"'Your majesty,'" Bruna smirked. "Don't die." She gave one last look. "You know what I mean." The plane hovered upwards and they left him waving on the balcony.
Cora moved out of the way to let Bruce fly the Commodore. The four flew across the city towards the Bifrost where Heimdall would be escorting people, according to Thor. Mira had never met the magical man; she had only heard stories from the god of thunder himself.
They all geared up for the upcoming fight. Mira felt the adrenaline rush through her fingers, making them spark slightly. She pulled on Loki's necklace, turning it into the signature glove, and readied her whip. Cora made her a comfortable black, fireproof outfit with skin tight leggings and a long sleeved top. Mira was grateful for the combat boots she had decided to wear when she was back on Earth. Cora herself was wearing the same dark outfit but with tints of pink, as usual. Bruna put on her Valkyrie outfit, clicking on the cuffs and boots. Complete with the Asgardian Dragonfang, it looked badass.
"Are we almost there?" Mira asked, looking out of the windows. The feeling before a fight reminded her of the Battle of New York. She smiled at the thought of Loki.
"Almost," Bruna said. She and Cora were loading the blaster with ammunition. Mira sat down next to Bruce, who flew the plane towards the rainbow bridge. Mira wondered if Thor was ok, and if Hela had taken the bait.
"Does this remind you of the team?" she said. He nodded with a smile.
"Yeah," said Bruce. "The black outfits, Thor being all heroic, you being sarcastic."
"Hey! Mean!" Mira laughed. He grinned but then sighed. "What's wrong?"
"I was gone for so long," the doctor said, looking sad. "What if they don't accept me anymore? I mean...I never really helped the team other than being green and angry." Mira shook her head.
"No! Bruce Banner, you were great on the team! Even when you weren't Hulk, ok?" she said. "You're smart, you're super powerful, and like, what would we do without you?"
"I guess so," he flushed red. She laughed again.
"Now you know how to fly alien spaceships, so one more skill to put on the pile," Mira said. He laughed also.
"We're coming up on the bridge!" Bruna called. Bruce steered the ship out of the woods and into the clear sky. Mira gasped in amazement. Asgard kept getting more and more mythological.
The Bifrost. The famous rainbow bridge spilled into a spherical, golden building, which also had a golden spike. Mira assumed that the bridge continued out of the spike, letting people travel around the different beautiful or dangerous worlds. She remembered going up the Bifrost to get to Sakaar. It was a weird feeling.
Maybe the bridge might have been more beautiful if there wasn't a huge dark creature with green eyes growling on top of it..
"Is that a freaking giant wolf?!" she practically yelled. Bruce winced.
"It's Fenris," Bruna narrowed her eyes. "Hela's damn pet. He's blocking the citizens." She aimed the gun at Fenris.
Mira saw the Asgardian refugees stop at the sight of the giant dog. Fenris growled more. The people cowered in terror. A single man lead them in the front. He waved his hand to motion for them to retreat. They all slowly shifted backwards, but then Fenris began to charge. The people screamed and sprinted in the other direction. Mira vaguely say children who were crying, and her heart snapped.
"Bruna now!" she called. The Valkyrie nodded and turned on the gun. Bullets rained down on the giant wolf. It looked up in annoyance.
"Take that!" Bruna shouted.
Mira whooped in triumph, but then watched as the refugees stopped again. Now they were trapped as Hela's seemingly undead army advanced from the other side of the bridge. Her eyes widened. The two leaders talked for a couple seconds, then the other army charged. Asgardian weapons clashed with dark bodies. Hela's zombie soldiers ran quicker and started to fight against the untrained people.
"I need to go help!" she said to Bruna. The woman gave her a look. "What?"
"Fine," Bruna rolled her eyes. "Go and be a hero. Cora, stay with me." Cora nodded and put a hand on Mira's shoulder.
"Good luck, Miss Goddess," she smiled. Mira grinned.
"Thanks. Bruce!" she yelled. "I'm going!"
"What?!" he yelled back.
"See you guys!" Mira waved and then proceeded to jump out of the Commodore's side. She missed the rush of jumping out of an airplane. It was always fun.
Mira landed on the bridge, somersaulted as to not break her legs, and immediately pushed past terrified families to fight against the enemies. She heard Bruna keep firing on Fenris and also the clank of metal swords. She finally reached the front of the ground and dodged a soldier who swung his arm at her.
"Hey Zombie-face! I'm over here!" She made a face at it, which made it growl. It swung at her once more, but she caught its arm and slammed her gloved hand through its gut. It crumbled up like dirt. The Asgardians looked in wonder at her.
She waved to a small child and then lashed out her whip, catching three more of Hela's soldiers and throwing them across into the stormy sea.
"For Narni-I mean, for Asgard!" she corrected herself. All the fight sequences Natasha and Clint had taught her were returning. Mira used the glove to throw fireballs, and her whip for stabilization and more damage.
Dynamite was back.
While she had a soldier in a fiery chokehold, she looked up to see that the blaster from the jet had not harmed Fenris at all. She frowned and kicked the soldier, leaving it unconscious on the bridge. The wolf began to charge again, and the person who she assumed was Heimdall took off his cloak. He hefted a large, sharp sword at the incoming foe.
Mira suddenly saw a figure leaping out of the Commodore.
"Bruce?!" she said, confused.
A soldier grabbed her shoulder, and Mira twisted around, whip wrapping itself around its arms and waist. She conjured a fireball and pushed the object through its torso. The whip unraveled, and the soldier stumbled back off the bridge. She turned her attention back towards the person who was now failing his arms frantically.
"Oh my god, no! Bruce! Don't-ah!" Her eyes grew big as Bruce Banner landed, or faceplanted, on the bridge, still in human form. Mira almost screamed. Fenris looked amused. He walked over and sniffed the body which was not moving at all. "He better not have died, or I swear to God-"
Her sentence was interrupted by the familiar roar of Hulk. Mira grinned. The green monster punched up and into the large jaw of Fenris, who was taken aback in surprise. Fenris growled more. He swatted at the Hulk, but the Hulk just fought back. They soon fell off the bridge and into the shallow water. It turned into an epic wrestling match.
A roar of soldiers got Mira's attention again. She turned her head and ducked as a sword was swung above her.
"Not cool!" she shouted. The enemy soldier lunged again, but her whip pushed it back into the crowd, crushing it and more of its friends. Mira grew worried as the soldiers advanced more, now sprinting. She threw a fireball, but they had learned to dodge by now. "Dammit! Just explode already!" Her wish was granted.
Before she could finish, the Commodore came crashing down onto the soldiers. Mira and all the Asgardians quickly crouched down. It skidded across the bridge before halting to a stop. The impact triggered a large party scene: fireworks exploded into the air and loud music began to play. Mira burst out laughing again.
Out of the multi-coloured ship came Bruna and Cora in full battle gear. Bruna smirked at the soldiers who ran towards her. She pulled out her shimmering sword and sliced them in half cleanly. Cora lashed out with various fabric, wrapping it around and suffocating soldiers. She also threw them off the bridge with long pieces of silk.
"She's using my whip technique," Mira said to no one in particular.
Meanwhile, the scared citizens who weren't fighting were growing tighter and tighter. Mira saw a child fall off the bridge, screaming for help. She rapidly reached out with her whip, caught him, and carried him to his mother.
Mira saw an enemy soldier run towards Heimdall. He was knocked down but still trying to fight furiously. She sprinted over and tried to help, but was blocked by the crowded sea of people. She pushed her way through as best as she could. Right as it was about to bring down its blade onto the guardian, Mira tripped and fell onto her right side, specifically her arm. Clutching it, she staggered up and ran over, slowed down.
Before she could help through, the enemy was blasted away by a foreign gun. Heimdall and Mira both looked up, shocked. A bulky figure walked through the smoke, and Mira's grin grew large.
"Hey man, I'm Korg," said Korg. "This is Miek." Mira saw the purple blob alien wave his scissor arms. She laughed. "We're going to jump on that spaceship and get out of here. Want to come?"
"Korg! You came!" Mira said gratefully. He nodded with a smile. "How did you know where we were though-" She was cut off yet again by a loud noise. "The hell was that?"
A giant spaceship came through the thick fog, and Heimdall's eyes widened. The fog thinned, and Mira laughed.
"Oh shit, you brought company." On the ship were more alien gladiators holding big guns. But the most surprising person was on a small outgrowth of the ship. He wore an elaborate outfit, complete with signature golden horns and the cape from Sakaar. He had added some gold plating on his shoulders though.
"Your saviour is here!" Loki declared victoriously. Mira facepalmed.
"Why do I like this man...wait...did I just say that aloud?! Hold up-"
