one - "get out of my house, strange!"
FIVE YEARS LATER...
"Are you sure you left him here?" Thor asked.
"Uhh..." Loki looked at the rubble of bricks. The sounds of New York engulfed the two brothers as they stood and watched some construction trucks wheel away the rubble of the elderly home where he SWORE he left Odin.
"Did you leave our father on the sidewalk or in the broken building?" the blonde asked angrily. Loki put his hands up defensively.
"I promise that he's safe! I could've swore he was here..." The raven-haired man thought hard and subconsciously smoothed his all black suit. "How was I supposed to know this would happen? I'm can't look into the future- I'm not a witch." Thor scoffed.
"You certainly are dressed as one." Loki furrowed his eyebrows. Some teenage girls walked past and squealed when they saw Thor. Loki rolled his eyes with disgust.
"Can we take a picture?" one of the girls asked. Thor nodded happily and grinned as they took a selfie, one of the Midgardian terms that Loki had learned. "Sorry that Jane dumped you..." they said as they walked away. Loki raised an amused eyebrow. Thor blushed a bit.
"S-she didn't dump me," he cleared his throat, "I dumped her...it was a uh mutual agreement."
"Right." There was a small pause. All of a sudden, a silver car screeched to a halt by the sidewalk. The brothers looked with interest as a furious-looking Asian got out even though the car was still in drive. She was wearing skinny jeans and a simple purple short sleeved shirt, all matched with some black combat boots.
"Get in," she demanded, opening the back door. Thor looked surprised, but also...happy? He waved slightly. Loki looked at his brother with wide eyes.
"Who is this..."
"Get in before I drag you two in!" Thor got into the car willingly, but Loki stayed behind. There was a twittering sensation by his feet. He looked down and saw an orange-ish circle form around under him. The Asian woman groaned and quickly flicked her wrist.
"What the-" Before he could protest, a golden whip was flung out and wrapped around his waist, pulling him into the car. The car door slammed behind him, and they sped off into the New York traffic.
"I cannot BELIEVE you are in New York City!" she said, apparently mad, from the driver's seat. She twisted the wheel, and they swerved to the left. Loki almost fell into Thor. He unwrapped the golden rope from his suit. The whip thankfully didn't wrinkle the black material and returned back to the woman's wrist, where it raveled up to make a small but fashionable bracelet.
"Mira Mark! I didn't know you still lived here!" Thor exclaimed joyfully. Loki raised an eyebrow. The name sounded familiar...
"Thor Odinson!" Mira yelled. Thor paled a little.
"Um...yes?"
"First of all, it's Mira LAM. And second, do you know how much trouble you've already caused?!" she said.
"A lot?"
"A lot! That selfie you took as already gone VIRAL! IN LIKE TWO MINUTES!" She swerved again, and Loki hit the car door. He rubbed his elbow. Some cars honked loudly. She just sped on.
"Can you drive like a sane person please?" said Loki. She looked into the top mirror and narrowed her eyes.
"You do not get to talk, ok Loki? You're welcome for saving your Asgardian ass." They drove into a small apartment parking lot and parked with another screech. Mira looked behind her at the two Asgardians. Her eyes could've had small flames in them. She threw a small bouncy ball at Loki. It his his forehead, and he winced.
"Ouch."
"Good, you're not fake. You look..." she looked up and down at the god in his all-black suit, "smashing. Now help me with groceries."
"What?" both brothers said in confusion.
"Help me carry stuff!" She opened the door and walked out. Thor exchanged expressions with Loki.
"We should probably listen to her. When she's stressed, she explodes things," Thor explained. Loki raised an eyebrow again. They both got out of the car and began to help the woman named Mira with bags of food.
"Thank you. Ok the apartment is over there." She started walking towards a hallway, and the two followed her. After two more hallways and slight difficulty with unlocking the door, the trio walked into the small apartment. Loki looked in interest.
There was a living room and a small door opening which lead to the kitchen and dining room. He observed another opening which lead to two bedrooms and bathroom. The house was littered with toys and books. A battle cry came through one of the bedrooms, and a small boy ran out and started to attack Thor's leg. Thor was amused.
"I remember you! You're grown up now!" Thor said with a laugh. The boy looked about four or five and had dark hair like Mira but did not look completely Asian. He had wide brown eyes and didn't seem to want to smile much.
"Kaleb, be nice to the big glorious blonde," Mira said.
"Ok, Mommy," the little boy said. He stopped hitting Thor, patted his muscular leg, and moved out to the living room. Mira placed the bags on the counter, and Thor and Loki put theirs on the table. She sighed.
"Sorry about that. He loves the Avengers, I promise. He's just sometimes like a small Hulk." She pushed back a stray hair behind her ear. Loki sent one of his projections towards the little boy. Mira looked on edge. "Don't touch my son, assho-" Loki cut her off.
"Look." The projection of Loki started playing with the little boy and making airplane noises. Kaleb played happily. Mira was surprised and then a bit amused.
"You like kids?" Loki shrugged slightly. "Well then. Back to you two...why are you in New York?"
"We're looki-"
"It's our own business," Loki cut off his brother, who looked offended. Mira cocked her head.
"What did I say, Mr. Laufeyson? You don't get to talk."
"Who are you?" he demanded. She looked surprised.
"You don't remember?! Wow, I'm hurt." She lashed out the whip again (this time it was in flames), and Loki saw that it was connected somehow magically to her wrist. She picked up a ball of paper from the table, looked at it intensely, and it burst into flames. He suddenly had flashbacks from five years ago:
"Mortal, prepare to die," he announced.
"Don't think so." She flicked her wrist sharply, and her whip came unraveled from the ship. Grabbing the end of it, she lashed it out at Loki, who narrowly missed the flames.
"Who are you?!" he hissed.
"A superhero! Duh!" She lashed out a couple more times, but he deflected the rope with his daggers.
"Firegirl," he muttered. Mira groaned.
"Oh my god, please never say that again. It's Dynamite! How come no one gets that?!"
"You tried to burn my face off!" Loki frowned. Mira grinned and blew out the paper ball, throwing it into the trash. The whip wrapped itself around her wrist into the same bracelet form.
"Oh yeah, that was great."
"So you're an Avenger," he spat. She narrowed her eyes.
"No. I left that a long time ago." Mira began to unpack the food and push it into the cabinets and refrigerator.
"Wait, you're not with the team anymore?" Thor asked with confusion. She shook her head.
"Oh right, you went off to find those stone thingys. I left after Ultron. It was just too dangerous for me. I had a son to take care of and uh..." She faltered for a second.
"How come you changed your last name again?" said Thor. Loki began to walk around, looking at all the childish drawings on the wall and mediocre furnishings. "And where is the man named David?" Mira pinched up her face.
"David left." Loki stopped mid-walk and looked at her instead.
"Oh." Thor was silenced. "I'm...sorry," he said awkwardly. She waved her hand, but Loki could tell it was a rough subject.
"It's fine. It was a couple months ago. We don't need him," she added in a small voice. "Now can you please tell me are you doing here exactly?"
"Looking for our father," Thor said, this time without an interruption.
"Isn't he in Asgard?" Loki cleared his throat after the question.
"No. Unfortunately."
"Loki took over the throne and hid Odin somewhere here on Earth," explained Thor.
"Ahhh. Seems like a typical Loki thing." She smirked.
"I'm right here," Loki pointed to himself. She waved her hand.
"Yeah yeah. Well, there is only one person who would know where your father is." Thor and Loki both perked up. "And he should be here about..." Mira looked at the door. There was suddenly a knock. "Now. Get behind me. Don't worry, he's not supposed to be able to do much damage to you in this house."
The brothers ran behind her and by the walls. Thor waved his hand and an umbrella magically appeared in his hand.
"You know you don't have to knock!" she yelled. Kaleb watched with intrigue at the scene and didn't notice the projected Loki disappear.
A man with a fluttering magenta cape opened the handle and walked in majestically. He had greying hair but a seemingly young face. An eye pendant held a shimmering green stone on his neck. With a dark blue outfit, he looked very...magical.
"What the..." Loki whispered.
"Get out of my house, Strange!" Mira said. The man looked offended.
"C'mon, Mira. You know why I'm here." She rolled her eyes.
"I don't want any of more of your 'welcome to the neighborhood' chocolates. They really sucked. Did you get them on a sale at the Dollar Store or something?" She folded her arms. He rolled his eyes this time. "You know the Dollar Stores in New York are sketch as hell."
"Mira..."
"We made an agreement: you wouldn't come around and give me crap and I wouldn't burn down your curtains in exchange!" She grinned. He grinned back.
"How've you been? We don't talk that much anymore," said Strange. He walked more into the house, and Mira walked up to him like they were old friends. Thor glanced at Loki with confusion. Loki gave him an "I don't know!" look.
"Uh huh. That's because I stopped exploding your stuff. You're welcome." She smiled cheerfully.
"Alright, Mira. Let me have Loki, and we can be on our own ways." Loki looked up in alarm. She shook her head at Strange.
"They're looking for their father," she said softly. Strange nodded solemnly.
"Exchange?" He held out his hand. Mira though for a second and then shook it.
"You got it, Strange." She walked over to the closet and pulled on a salmon-coloured hoodie with tints of grey. "Come on, Thor." She motioned to the blonde. He looked at her with uncertainty.
"Mira, what is happening?!" he whispered. "Who is the man in the otherworldly cape? He looks dangerous..."
"I can hear you!" Strange said loudly. He was squatted down and saying hi to Kaleb, who replied back with a "hi, Mr. Strange. Mommy doesn't like you."
"Don't worry, I'll explain on the walk." She turned back to Loki. "Don't panic. You'll be fine." She grabbed Thor and pushed him out the door.
Before closing it, Mira looked back at Strange.
"Strange, make sure to call a babysitter who will stay for the day please. Make sure I can pay her. I don't need a $100 nanny. Make sure my house is safe while we're gone. Put some enchantments or something; I don't really care all that much. And take all the groceries out. Put the right ones in the fridge." She thought for a second. "Oh, lock the door. And please be gentle with Loki. He's a fragile creature."
"I beg to differ," Loki muttered. Mira continued.
"And NO portals in my house or you will suffer my wrath. They mess up the carpet." She smiled sweetly. "Thank you! You're the best!" She blew a kiss and then closed the door. The man named Strange waved at her. He turned back to Loki, who looked at him warily.
"Don't you dare do anythi-" Before he knew it, the golden circle appeared under his feet.
"Don't tell Mira or she'll burn down my front door again. Have a nice journey!" Loki yelped and fell down a deep, dark hole. Goddamn mortals...
