four - "i'm your new best friend. get used to it. yay!"
Mira awoke to someone in her room. Quickly, she pulled the blanket over her body. Wait...when did I get into the blankets?! She looked down and saw pajamas. The top was loose and comfortable and resembled a tank top, and the bottoms were black but warm. She rubbed her eyes to get a clearer image of the person in her room.
It was a woman, a bit younger than Mira. She had long red hair and was wearing an quite simple light pink dress that didn't completely match the overly colourful surroundings but also had enough vibrance and strange patterns that would've been considered very bright for a normal day out in New York City. She was bent over the drink shelf, and she seemed to be dusting but without any duster. Perhaps she was a servant sent by that Grandmaster person.
Mira rubbed her eyes again and cleared her throat. The strange lady whirled around, in shock and in a bit of fear. Her face was young and human-like with dark brown eyes but an unnatural pearliness of her skin gave it away; she was an alien. She immediately bent her head at the sight of Mira.
"I didn't mean to wake you, Ms. Goddess," she whispered. Mira waved her hand.
"Uh...it's no problem," she said. The woman nodded and stayed with her head bent. Mira raised an eyebrow. "Are you ok?" The servant hesitated and nodded. "Are you allowed to talk to me?" The woman shook her head. Mira folded her arms. "Well as the um goddess, I allow you to talk to me. All the time." The red head looked up in surprise.
"Can you do that?" she asked, eagerly. Mira nodded.
"I think so. I'm not from here..."
"Right."
"So..." Mira looked around the room awkwardly. "What's your name? I'm Mira Lam. But you can call me Dynamite. That's like my code name." The woman seemed to stifle a giggle. Good, I made her laugh. Mira grinned. The servant cleared her throat and shook her head.
"I don't have a name," she replied softly.
"What?! How do you not have a name?" said Mira, confused. The woman shrugged slightly.
"The Grandmaster calls me Lady 132. I'm the best Lady here though. That's why I was assigned to you," she said proudly. Mira furrowed her eyebrows.
"Well, if we're going to be friends, then I don't want to call you by a number all the time." The Asian combed through her black hair. The other woman concentrated.
"I don't remember what my parents named me," she said. "I think they left me here on Sakaar, but that's just what the Grandmaster tells me." She thought some more. Her face brightened. "But Bruna calls me Cora sometimes! Because she said my hair looks sort of like the colour of something called coral. And she calls me 'a star' if I do something good. Like give her food. "
"Bruna? Who's that?" Mira asked. She shifted inside the warm blankets. Cora blushed.
"She's a great person! Her number is Scrapper 142. She once told me her real name, but I just call her Bruna. She's the Grandmaster's best Scrapper, and she always gets him the best competitors for his games! She is the only one who really acknowledges me on this planet." Cora sighed dreamily. Mira furrowed her eyebrows.
"What...? But...ok!" She smiled. She thought for a second. "Cora...who is a star...hmmm..." Mira eyes lightened up. "Cora Aaster! Boom! Mic drop!" She imitated dropping a mic. Cora cocked her head.
"What is a mic?" she asked, confused. Mira facepalmed.
"I forgot we are on an alien planet. Sorry. Ok, can you explain this whole planet to me? And uh what your role for me is? Oh and you can come closer - I won't bite or anything, I promise."
"Of course, Ms. Goddess," Cora nodded eagerly and shyly walked closer. Mira patted a spot on the bed near her, and Cora sat down.
"Ok first of all, just call me Mira. The whole goddess thing is just," Mira waved her hand in the air absentmindedly. "Second of all, alright spill."
"Spill what?"
"Sorry, scratch that. Just tell me everything about this planet. Thanks."
Ten minutes later, Mira was lounging on the pillows, still in the pajamas. Cora was next to her, talking a lot more comfortably.
"So recap," Mira interrupted. "This Grandmaster dude is the ruler of this alien planet place. He hosts lots of parties and has these gladiator rounds where competitors beat the crap out of each other for entertainment. There are people called Scrappers who collect competitors, and your friend Bruna is one of them. You are a Lady, who are the servants and maids of the Grandmaster's palace building. And no one can ever leave Sakaar. Ever." Cora thought and then nodded.
"Perfect!" she said cheerfully. Mira rubbed her eyes.
"Wow. That is a LOT to take in."
"One more thing," Cora added. "You can basically do anything you want as long as it's ok with the Grandmaster. Because you are a goddess." She smiled.
"Ok that's pretty awesome," Mira admitted. Cora laughed. "So why are you the best Lady he has?" Cora blushed a bit again.
"I am special. Not like the other Ladies here," she explained. Mira raised an eyebrow.
"How so?" Cora got off the bed and reached out her hand. "Stand up, and I can show you." Mira hesitantly took her hand and then stood up. She brushed off her pants a bit.
"So..."
"My speciality is in outward appearances," said Cora. "Stand still." She backed away a bit and thought for a second. Before Mira could say something about being confused (which was not that unusual to be honest), Cora twirled her finger around in a circle and Mira felt something tingling near her body. She looked down and yelped when she saw coral-coloured magic wrapping itself around her. It floated away in a small cloud towards Cora, who just waved it to the side.
"Woah..." Instead of pajamas, Mira was now dressed in a turquoise gown that sparkled slightly and fountained out towards the bottom in waves of fluffy layers. "This is...gorgeous!"
"Oh here!" Cora waved her hand again, and Mira felt a brush against her face. Cora rummaged around one of the shelves and pulled out a mirror. Mira almost gasped aloud in shock. She had makeup on! And not just the lazy eyeliner she put on daily but actually really well-done, professional-looking makeup! Her eyes were trimmed with blue eyeshadow, dark black wings, and long lashes. She had simple contour that made her cheekbones stand out and a dark red lipstick that complimented the whole look. To add more, her hair was curled slightly at the bottom and framed her face.
"Wow," Mira whispered. Cora looked anxious.
"Do you like it?"
"Do I like it?" Mira put down the mirror and grinned. "Of freaking course!" Cora smiled and blushed more. "Cora, you have magic?! What the heck?! That is so cool; oh my god!"
"You think so?" Cora asked. Mira nodded.
"Totally! Can you do anything else with the magic?" Cora thought.
"I've made disguises for Bruna befor-oh!" She covered her mouth quickly. "Don't tell the Grandmaster. Please," she said, muffled. Her eyes pleaded Mira.
"I won't, don't worry." Mira looked back down and shuffled around in the purple gown. She decided to change the subject. "Question: did you make the pajamas?" Cora nodded. "Ok another question: do you still have my other clothes? That sweater was like my favourite thing ever, next to Kaleb." Cora nodded again and waved her fingers. Mira's outfit from last night (or day? She wasn't sure on the timezones on Sakaar) appeared in her hands. She held the sweater, white shirt, jeans, and combat boots out to Mira.
"Here there are! Oh and let me help you." The redhead waved a hand, and Mira was clothed in the outfit instead of the blue dress.
"Thanks!" Mira looked down at the jeans and boots. "That power is pretty handy."
"It is! And I'm really good at it too! I think..." Cora trailed off. Mira nodded and put a hand on her shoulder.
"You are GREAT at it! Consider me very, very impressed." Cora grinned and bowed her head slightly. "So...what do I do here?" Mira began to walk around the room, looking out the big window again. The bustling city downstairs and crowds seemed to never stop.
"Well the Grandmaster is hosting a party for you tonight." Mira turned around slowly.
"Wait what?!"
"Yep. For your arrival!"
"Oh god..." Mira sighed.
"What's wrong, my lady?" asked Cora.
"I haven't been to any gala or anything in years! The last one was the party at Stark's place before Ultron blew up all the fancy shit," she shrugged.
"I can help! I've lived here for a long time, AND I will make sure you look stunning." Cora smiled. Mira smiled back.
"I am so glad that we are friends."
A few hours and dresses later, Mira twirled around for what seemed to be the hundredth time.
"Are we done yet?" she groaned. Not that she didn't like looking like a model, but it was starting to get a little tedious. Cora inspected the dress and smiled. Mira hadn't actually looked at the dress fully, but she felt its soft, almost silky material. It seemed to reach the floor but felt like it had no sleeves.
"I think this one will do!" said Cora, happily. "Here's the mirror, miss." Cora waved her hand, and a full sized mirror floated towards Mira. Mira widened her eyes.
"Woah, it looks like I actually work out!" was her first comment. Cora laughed.
The dress was elegant and summery. It was a poppy orange and as she had guessed, was floor length. There were spaghetti straps that widened into fabric which wrapped around her chest. A little above her waist, there were small cut outs that showed some bits of skin. The rest of the dress flowed down freely in small folds. Mira was shocked to see that there were two cuts near each leg down the side of the skirt.
"This makes me look like the Asian Angelina Jolie!" she exclaimed.
"Who?" Cora asked. Mira turned around to see the back of the dress - the spaghetti straps laced up the fabric together and were tied into a cute bow. Most of her lower back was shown.
"Angelina Jolie! You know like with the leg thing that one time in 2012?" Cora shook her head. "Like this." Mira stuck out her leg and posed as if she was on a red carpet. Cora laughed again.
"You are probably much prettier than her," she said. Mira shook her head with a smile.
"Psh you are too nice to me, even though we just met. And she is gorgeous. I'm just kinda like...here. It's ok though; she can be the movie badass superhero and I'll be the actual badass superhero." Cora shrugged.
"Do you like the dress?" she asked. Mira nodded enthusiastically.
"I love it! You are a literal wizard. Like the female, red-head Hermione."
"Who is tha-"
"Ok I need to catch you up on Earth stuff later. How about after this party thing?" Mira said. Cora nodded enthusiastically.
"So are you from Earth?" Cora asked. She glanced at Mira's hair. "I'm thinking about what to do your hair, miss."
"It's Mira, remember?" Mira said with a smile. "And yeah, I am. But don't tell other people. Just in case." Cora nodded and twirled her fingers. Mira felt her hair poof around her and then fall back down. She looked into the mirror. Her hair was slightly curled, and she had light, almost none makeup on. She grinned. "You are an amazing person, Cora." Cora blushed. "And I am your new best friend. Get used to it. Yay!" Mira cheered a little. Cora stifled a grin.
"Thank you, mis-I mean, Mira." Mira smiled again.
"Alright, what time is it?" Mira looked around for a clock or a watch. As if on cue, a lady in the same pink dress as Cora came shuffling in with her head down. Cora walked over to her, and they whispered softly. Mira looked at her wrist as they talked. The golden whip pulsed slightly, and small sparks burst on its surface. She sighed and turned when she heard Cora walk back. She saw the other Lady shuffle out of the room. "What happened?"
"The party is soon, so we should start going to the main room."
"Alrighty party, here we come," Mira rhymed. She sighed a bit.
"You will be fine, Mira," Cora said encouragingly. "I can help you talk to people, and we will most likely be watching one of the competitions afterwards, so you can just sit there."
"Thank god. But I don't really want to watch the competition," Mira frowned. Cora patted her shoulder.
"Just watch for a little bit. There isn't much else to do on this planet." She stepped back and examined Mira, who gave a little twirl for effect. Cora's eyes lit up. "Oh do you need this?" She waved her hand, and a necklace with a thin chain and light green pendant appeared in her fingers. Mira hesitated. It was from Loki, so who knew how reliable it would be or what it could do to her. But then again...it had a sort of magically infused glove somehow. She nodded.
"Sure. What could it possibly do?"
"It does not really match with the dress though," Cora said as she clasped it onto Mira's neck. "Wait a second..." Her eyes grew big as the pendant changed colour to a dark lavender. Mira was surprised too.
"I guess it changes to match the outfit?" she guessed.
"You are full of surprises, Mira." Cora waved her hand at Mira's feet, and a pair of white high heels appeared on the floor. Mira slipped them on.
"Ha that's funny. But thanks."
"Shall we go?" Cora asked. "I will be right behind you." Mira took a deep breath.
"Let's go and party the hell out of this alien planet."
~
The party was more of a drink-and-talk party, to Mira's dismay. Instead of a wild college style part, it reminded her slightly of Tony's party that one time: people in "nice" clothes, a large bar, and an obnoxious hoster. Ok, Stark wasn't that bad, but the Grandmaster was truly a character. In his sparkly gold bathrobe, he grinned as Mira walked into the room. Actually, the whole room stopped when she walked in. Cora had to push Mira a bit to make her continue walking. Then the people started to talk and drink again. The Grandmaster was DJ-ing (Mira was very surprised) with a colourful DJ "desk" and paint splattered headphones. He still was wearing the same outfit. He handed her a glass with a bright blue liquid, said something about mingling, and then went back to DJ-ing. Mira awkwardly stood in the corner holding the drink, not wanting to actually drink it. Different aliens gave her different looks; some of them looked afraid but some just looked disinterested.
"Cora, what should I do right now?" Mira whispered to the Lady who stood behind her. Mira had just gotten the tenth glare of the day, and it was getting on her nerves. "Am I allowed to leave?" Cora shook her head.
"No, miss. The Grandmaster would get mad. Just stay a little bit longer." Mira groaned under her breath and played with the fabric of her skirt.
"Hey, is your friend Bruna here? I want to meet her," she said, changing the subject. Cora blushed and looked around the room. She nodded and pointed. Mira followed her finger and saw another lady standing in another corner, shrouded by shadows. She seemed to be observing everyone and drinking a big glass of alcohol at the same time.
"It looks like she was allowed in to this party. Normally she isn't. We can go over to her if you want."
"Anything to get these assholes to stop glaring at me. Let's go." Mira put down her neon drink on a random table and began to walk across the room to the lady in the shadows. The lady straightened up a bit as they walked towards her. She took another swig from her brown bottle. Mira smiled and tried to be as friendly as possible. She honestly hadn't made any new friends after Kaleb was born other than Strange, which had not been a good start in the first place.
"Hi! Cora has told me great things about you," she began. The woman raised an eyebrow. Mira noticed that she was dressed in different clothing, not the same extravagant gowns as the other partygoers.
She was wearing practically all leather: leather sleeveless tunic, leather pants, leather arm guards, leather gloves. Various belts and straps wrapped around her wrists and waist. A dark blue half cape was attached to the tunic. Her hair was pulled up in a messy ponytail at the top of her head and was held with small braids. To top it all off, there were strange white stripes along the sides of her face and eyebrows. Mira guessed she wasn't from Sakaar either.
"Great." The lady looked unimpressed and took another swig.
"Hi Bruna!" Cora said, softly but excited. Mira noticed she was blushing madly. Bruna put down her drink and let out a little smile.
"Hi, Cora. How are you?"
"Good, very good. I got assigned to the goddess!" She looked to Mira, who smiled awkwardly. Bruna looked at Mira.
"So you're the goddess." She narrowed her eyes. "You from one of those other worlds? Like Asgard?"
"Uh..." Mira thought. "Sort o-"
"No," Cora shook her head but then widened her eyes at Mira. "Oh no! I'm so sorry...I just kind of speak my mind sometimes! Oh no oh no..." Mira put a hand on the worrying girl's shoulder again.
"Hey! Calm down! It's fine." She tuned to Bruna. "Just don't tell anyone, ok? And I mean anyone." Bruna nodded knowingly.
"Fine." She took one last swig and swayed a little as she put the glass down. "I'm leaving. See you, Cora. See you, Miss Goddess." She said Mira's name with heavy sarcasm. Cora waved as Bruna walked out the door.
"Wow. She is um...nice," Mira commented. Cora sighed slightly.
"She really is the best." Mira nodded, doubtful. The two looked at the party around them. "Should we leave now?" Cora asked.
"Yes. I think the party is dying down anyways."
"Thank the freaking heavens above. I am not made for this goddess stuff." Cora laughed.
"Perhaps because you aren't a real one."
"Shhhhhh..."
