Chapter 139
Normally the drive to her office calmed Felicity, but today it was nerve wracking, since this was one of the biggest days of her career and if she blew it, she was definitely fired. Not even Kara would be able to justify keeping her around.
She was also very glad Kara had the foresight of having a town car sent for her, since there was no way she was in any mindset to drive to work herself today.
"Are you trying to transmit in morse code with your foot? Because if so, let me get out my phone and pull up a translator app." Avery said from next to her with a smile and Felicity realized that she'd been tapping her foot the entire ride since she'd been picked up.
"Sorry, just nervous." Felicity said.
"Don't be. Kara said it herself, she wouldn't have assigned you this presentation if she didn't think you could handle it. She wouldn't have given you this opportunity if she didn't think you can handle it. She doesn't give jobs to people who don't deserve them. She actually told me that not even Lena would be safe if she didn't deliver." Avery assured her.
"Thanks. And by the way, congrats on your doctorate." Felicity said, since Avery had recently gotten her Ph.d in multiple advanced fields.
"Thanks, this is actually my last assignment as Kara's assistant before I get promoted to one of the research teams, since this meeting was scheduled before I got my doctorate and there's no way to find a replacement as good as me on such short notice. I think Kara's going over the list of replacements while I'm here." Avery said as they arrived at the complex.
"Come on, let's get inside so I can make sure everything is set for the presentation." Felicity said and Avery nodded as they both made sure their badges were on display for security.
"I still can't believe how drastic the security measures are compared to the other facilities." Avery said, since they had to wait in line, single file to enter the building through the biometric gait analysis system that every employee was required to enter this part of the building.
"Considering what we keep here, you shouldn't be surprised. One of the reasons we have so many military contracts is because of the lengths we go to keep our projects secure. Especially this one." Felicity said as she moved to pass through the security system, followed by Avery before they headed up to her office.
A couple hours later found Felicity in the presentation hall, standing behind a curtain waiting for everyone to fill in.
"Well, how's it looking?" Felicity asked Avery when she walked back there.
"Full house, as expected. Alex is out there, along with several members of the Joint Chiefs, the Secretary of Defense, several senators and other government officials. Among others. Just like we expected." Avery said.
"Great. A whole bunch of people screw this up in front of." Felicity mumbled.
"Felicity, this is going to work. Every single genius in this building, plus Kara and Lena have checked this thing out, not to mention how many times you have. You got this. Just relax and treat it like every other pitch you've ever done. Especially since I think you're about to get your cue." Avery said, right as the announcer came on.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Felicity Smoak, Head of the Weapons Division at Argo Enterprises." the announcer said and Felicity took a deep breath before she walked out on stage to where the prototype was covered and she was greeted by applause.
"Thank you all for coming. On behalf of myself, Kara Danvers and everyone here at Argo Enterprises, I'd welcome you here to our presentation center. Now I know you're all very busy people, so let's not waste time with speeches and get right to good stuff. The reason you're all here today is to see the latest in defense technology. So, without any further delays." Felicity said as the lights dimmed and she felt more in her element now, much more impressive, her nerves gone.
The panoramic screen behind Felicity flickered to life, casting a cool blue glow across the presentation hall. The Argo logo pulsed once, then faded into a rotating schematic — sleek, angular, unmistakably advanced.
Felicity stepped forward, her voice steady.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the AEGIS Variable-Yield Defense Platform. The latest tool this country has to protect itself." Felicity said proudly as thy a
A soft mechanical hum filled the room as the black cloth covering the prototype retracted into the pedestal with a whisper of magnetized fabric. Gasps echoed from the second tier. Even the Joint Chiefs leaned forward.
The weapon stood tall and gleaming — a sleek, modular system forged from next-generation alloys, its surface a blend of matte black plating and faint blue energy lines. The emitter core pulsed gently at its center.
"This is the most advanced defense system Argo Enterprises has ever built," Felicity said. "Designed to adapt to any threat level, AEGIS is a precision tool engineered for control, versatility, and minimal collateral impact."
The screen behind her shifted, displaying the four primary modes with animated icons:
"As you can see here, there are four different modes to the AEGIS. EM Suppression pulse, which will disable any hostile tech in range, the Kinetic dampener, which will halt high-momentum threats from cannon fire to ballistic missiles. The Plasma-edge cutter, can cut through almost anything, meant to assist with breaching and rescue. And finally, for extreme combat scenarios where you have no other option, we have the most powerful of them all, the High-Yield Particle burst. Make sure it's not aimed at you when that fires." Felicity said and she could tell that everyone, especially Alex, was impressed.
"I want to be clear about something. Despite all these uses, the AEGIS is not meant to be a weapon of mass destruction," Felicity continued, "It's response system. It can disable drones, halt charges, breach reinforced structures or neutralize high-threat targets - all with precision and restraint."
Felicity then tapped her tablet causing the AEGIS platform to whirl to life as its emitter core glowed brighter, the modular components reconfiguring with a soft hiss of magnetic locks. The cannon rotated, locking into test mode.
"And today, you all get to see what it can do. You might stay clear." Felicity said as she took a step back to give them all a clear view of the AEGIS in action.
A low hum filled the presentation hall as the AEGIS platform powered up, its emitter core glowing a steady, controlled blue. Felicity stepped aside, giving the audience a clear view of the device.
"AEGIS is designed to adapt to any threat level," she said. "Today, I'll be demonstrating all four operational modes."
A technician in Argo gray stepped forward, tapping a command into the pedestal interface. The lights shifted to a cool white, illuminating the testing chamber behind the stage — a reinforced glass enclosure large enough to house a small vehicle.
Felicity lifted her chin.
"Mode One: EM Suppression Pulse."
Inside the chamber, three of Argo Enterprises proprietary tech military grade drones took flight, all of them armed with dummy rounds.
Felicity simply tapped her tablet and the AEGIS core brightened as it charged up before a soft whump of compressed air echoed through the hall as the emitter fired a bright blue energy burst, which caused all three drones to drop instantly. No sparks, explosions or damage, just silence.
One of the generals leaned forward, interest clear on her face. "Full system shut down?"
"Yes ma'am," Felicity said. "Non-destructive, all hardware intact, software reboot required and all data intact to be recovered."
A murmur of approval went through the crowd as Alex let her lip twitch a bit to show a version of how proud she was of her girlfriend right now, no sign of the nerves she saw this morning popping up as Felicity continued with the demonstration.
"Mode Two: Kinetic Dampener." Felicity said as she changed its mode as a reinforced humanoid dummy rolled into the chamber. A weighted dummy designed to simulate a charging combatant. The floor beneath it lit up, signaling the start of the test.
The dummy launched forward at high speeds, not Flash or Supergirl speeds obviously, but still fast.
Felicity tapped her tablet and the AEGIS reconfigured itself to emit a tight, focused pulse that was nearly invisible, that caused the dummy to stop dead when it hit the field. No crash or recoil.
A senator blinked in shock. "That thing must've weighed--"
"Four hundred pounds," Felicity said. "The dampener arrests momentum without causing internal damage. Ideal for subduing enhanced combatants or preventing civilian casualties during high‑speed impacts."
Alex's eyebrows lifted. She was impressed — and she didn't impress easily.
"Mode Three," Felicity said, "is designed for rescue operations."
A thick slab of reinforced steel lowered into the chamber — the kind used in armored vehicles.
Felicity tapped her tablet.
The AEGIS cannon rotated, locking into a narrow, precision‑cutting configuration. A thin blade of white‑blue plasma extended from the emitter, humming softly.
The weapon traced a clean line across the steel.
The slab split in two.
No sparks.
No jagged edges.
Just a perfect surgical cut.
"This mode allows for breaching, extraction, and emergency response," Felicity said. "Utilizing a more advanced version of the plasma saw we designed for use by fire departments, but built for more extreme circumstances.
A few senators exchanged impressed looks.
But the room quieted as Felicity stepped back toward the podium.
"And finally... Mode Four."
Alex straightened in her seat.
Everyone did.
The chamber reconfigured again, this time revealing a block of composite armor — the same material used in next‑generation military vehicles. It was thick. Dense. Designed to withstand direct explosive impact.
Felicity's heart thudded once.
She tapped her tablet.
The AEGIS core shifted from blue to a deep, pulsing red.
The cannon rotated into its final configuration.
A warning tone sounded.
"Mode Four is reserved for extreme threat scenarios," Felicity said. "This is the highest output setting."
The room held its breath.
Felicity pressed the command.
A beam of concentrated energy fired — fast, clean, controlled.
The armor block glowed white-hot for a moment... then split down the center, molten edges cooling in seconds.
No explosion.
No shrapnel.
Just precision.
The room erupted in murmurs.
One general whispered, "Jesus Christ..."
Another said, "That's... that's a game changer."
Alex didn't speak — but her eyes were locked on Felicity, full of pride and something deeper.
Felicity stepped forward again, voice steady.
"AEGIS is not designed to destroy cities. It's designed to prevent them from being destroyed. It gives our forces the ability to respond to any threat with precision, control, and minimal collateral impact."
She paused.
"And it's ready for deployment. To America and its allies, Argo Enterprises is reporting for duty." Felicity said and for a moment, there was silence before the hall burst out into applause. Real excited applause and Felicity could tell that she'd done it. Once again she'd nailed the presentation.
"So, is anyone interested?" Felicity asked as the presentation ended and multiple people walked up to her to discuss making deals.
