Miss Martian POV

"M'gann," Artemis said as Deathstroke charged at me. "Get out before he captures you again."

"Right, right!" I replied, getting to my feet. "And sorry."

"About what?"

I used my powers to push Deathstroke back. He collided with Artemis, both falling to the ground. I shifted my skin to form gills in my neck and phased through the ground. Once I was outside, my legs shifted into a mermaid tale. I glanced to my left to see Sportsmaster and Cheshire swimming away.

"M'gann." Looking in the other direction, I saw (y/n) motioning for me to follow her. I swam over to her. "Let's get going. I have a car waiting on a beach a few miles away."

I nodded and we swam away from Manta's sub.

"How did you manage to find me?" I asked her.

"Dad used to work with Manta, thus he knows how to track him."

"Why did you come with them? Last I checked, you didn't like your father."

"I don't, but Jade told me he was going after Manta, and I knew I had to come. I didn't go to get revenge if that's what you were thinking."

"It wasn't."

We continued in silence for a long time. We still hadn't said anything by the time we reached land. I levitated the two of us out of the water. (y/n) led me to her car after I changed my appearance back to normal. She tossed me a towel, which I used to dry off while she pulled off her wetsuit. We got into (y/n)'s convertible and started the drive back.

Finding the silence somewhat awkward, I decided to speak up.

"Thanks for coming to help me, (y/n)," I said.

"You're welcome, M'gann," she replied, keeping her eyes on the road. "But I didn't do this entirely for you."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean that it wasn't just me who wanted you back. The Team was worried about you and I had to do something about it."

I nodded slowly. Somehow, I didn't believe that was the entire truth. Using my powers carefully, I peeked into her mind, searching for the truth. I saw (y/n) sigh as she sensed my presence in her head, but she said nothing. My eyes widened when I discovered the truth. I pulled out of (y/n)'s mind and stared at her.

It turns out (y/n) has had a crush on Conner for years, starting back when he first joined the Team. She always kept her feelings hidden so no one but Artemis knew. And apparently, a while back, Conner had said that he still cared for me. (y/n) was present when he said that, his words leaving her sad. She had taken it upon herself to find me and get me back, both for La'gaan, to whom she promised she would find me, and for Conner.

I suddenly remembered times where I would catch (y/n) looking at Conner with a content smile, happy to be around him. She had always been there for him and no one ever saw how much she really cared for him.

"Find what you were looking for?" she asked, her voice holding back any emotion.

"Oh, (y/n)," I said. "I'm so sorry. I had no idea."

"No one did."

"No, (y/n). Back then, I didn't see your love for him. But, now that I know, I can see it clearly. I'm sorry it took me so long to realize it."

"That's not your fault, M'gann. I made sure I never showed my real feelings towards Conner. I saw you two were in love and I didn't get in the way. You two were happy."

"And yet, now that we're not together, you still haven't told him."

"Because I knew, know, that Conner is in love with you. I can't change his mind about that. His love life is not my business. If he doesn't like me the way I like him back, so be it. I'll live with that fact." We sat in silence for a few minutes before (y/n) sighed. "You should get some rest. Manta probably had you working non-stop on fixing Kaldur's mind. We still have a few hours before we reach the nearest Zeta-tube."
