Chapter 6 The price of Freedom

Little note this was supposed to be chapter 7 but chapter 6 got lost somewhere even from my word document and since it wasn't critical I've decided to not reupload it.

POV 3rd

Ramstein Air force base Germany

You are roughly around here...

During the course of the past year bases all over the world be it American, Russian, or even Japanese. They were either sneakily fortified or they weren't Ramstein was one of the former many did not know the true extent of fortification or even supplies stored till they were forced to escape the virus. Many men and their sons fled to the military bases in search of refuge few were turned away. However, in exchange for shelter, food, and necessities you had to put into the defense of the base be it maintenance, guard duty, etc. Refusal to do so will always lead to expulsion from the base with a side arm with one bullet for yourself should you use it. The bases had to be self sufficient for long period of time and Ramstein was no exception. Farming minor fishing but most important was the water treatment and ammunition factory. Which took used shells and reused them or if need be make new rounds.

Regardless of all that outside the walls, towers, and gates lay enemy territory and since most military equipment belonged to the U.S. anyway the attackers found themselves without hardly any weapons or military grade vehicles and aircraft not that it would help. Unlike America where weapons and ammo and even contraband military hardware were common in most European countries things like that were regulated heavily... unless your Poland.

So, defense of all military bases was literally cake in Europe and since most infrastructure was maintained by men well. Things fell apart much quicker and unlike America, Russia, or even china many found their services quickly fading and soon the captured men and forced couples found the need to use manual labor. Unfortunately, the massive amount of illegal immigrants would pay the price forced into hard labor to keep society afloat. All of Europe carried this mentality since they aren't native to our country, they will take care of our system under lock and key, rifle and dagger alike. In the first week three mass uprisings occurred all three were quashed.

Many males that were native European born joined these uprisings the last one was the largest distraction in history to get as many men to U.S. or their native countries armed forces bases. It only partially succeeded and the week of valentines which had all these uprisings would be named the week of blood. After that the remaining stragglers took what supplies they had left and hid anywhere and everywhere from the forests like the Ardennes to the catacombs of Paris resistance movements were everywhere and no matter how hard the new matriarchy tried they couldn't crush them.

Entry #5

Today we make a break for Ramstein air force base many of us are hungry and tired as we had to travel at night to avoid being rounded up by the new government in charge of Germany or whatever. Since the start of our travels we've grown from just twenty four men and boys to over two thousand. We have kept silent with no fire to warm us the winter hasn't left us yet and many huddle like penguins to conserve what little heat we have. Even if we wanted to make it to another armed forces base, we could not we are out of medical supplies and among us only forty us have guns and they are antique weapons still usable but I don't know how we will fare against the city we need to infiltrate and run through.

I can still hear the wolves howling in the distance one more night out here in the countryside and we will be attacked for sure, so which is it gonna be the wolves or the women. Since im one of the few that have a weapon Im in the front I will write this to whoever should read it if you are then I am dead. Keep fighting never give up this virus will be beaten one way or another and as long as we continue to fight the spirit of our fathers and grandfathers and their fathers and so on will live forever. Freedom from this government is only a few kilometers away yet it will be the most dangerous few kilometers of our lives and Im afraid many will be captured or killed. However just in case I found some poisonous berries in the trees and have had it confirmed with a botanist many followed suit after me better to be dead than a slave.

We waited as the moon began to apex in the night sky our emotions and fears were tempered by what was to come in a few minutes. Many knew that we would be captured or even killed and only a few of us would make it. Regardless many had to tell themselves that the country they called home was no longer theirs but controlled by a virus of all things. Nevertheless, we had over one hundred men volunteer to act as bait. The volunteers were all old men, yet it did make it any easier to watch them sneak to their certain doom.

The men were to meet up with the local resistance and create a distraction while we made our break for it. The rules were very simple if cruel. "Everyman for himself you turn back for nobody and you assist nobody make it to the base." Many of the teenagers were emotional but determined they would likely make it more than us.

"Albert when are we moving." A boy I could not identify whispered to me.

"As soon as the distraction is in play."

"What will it look like?" Before I could answer a massive explosion erupted on the opposite side of the city.

"Like that everyone lets go!" I yelled and pretty soon our massive group followed suit into the streets as we sneaked our way through alleys and backstreets or as sneaky as you can be for a massive group. It didn't take long to be spotted.

Whistles* "Over there a large group of refuges get them!"

"Shit we've been spotted no use keeping quiet!" I yelled.

Bang* The bullet left the muzzle of my rifle killing the women that alerted everyone. As soon as that happened all hell broke loose as the sound echoed through the streets. Soon we heard sirens and a cacophony of footsteps.

"Run!" Many yelled and soon were running full sprint through the allies spilling into the main streets. Eventually we got cornered in a square by an armored vehicle.

"Shit how are we supposed to go up against that!" A man yelled as he fired his own gun at incoming officer.

"Gentlemen look on the roof!" I called out.

The silhouette of someone holding a tube was barely visible thanks to the lighting on the street but soon the POP From the firing of the tube weapon and BOOM! Of the armored vehicle answered our prayer.

"Keep running!" I yelled as a large amount of us had managed to stay together We ran past the APC to a road block several armored vehicles this time blocked our path as we ran forward I saw a manhole and ran opening it up with the help of a few others as many looked to follow my plan.

I was the first down the ladder and soon more followed I kept moving through the sewer knee deep I filth as I kept my rifle above my head soon another caught up and overtook me carrying a hunting shotgun. As we walked, I could hear the sounds of fighting and gunfire from the armored vehicles as we made our escape.

We walked for what seemed like hours until we were met by several resistance forces who were Stacked up against the wall to the opening of a larger tunnel. We were given a hand up in a stop motion and we did so.

"What's the problem?" The man with the shotgun whispered.

"Some enemies are coming this way we saw them enter the sewers right behind us. Don't worry about us keep going down this sewer tunnel don't go up the first or third manhole enter the second one you encounter you should be able to meet up with some more of our comrades there go!" The men spoke urgently. We both nodded at the partisan and continued down the path our flashlights barely lit the dim tunnel. We came to the first manhole and heard gunfire and yelling from both male and females, so a battle was ensuing above us we gathered we continued to move past it.

We came upon the second manhole and heard no sounds coming from this one.

"Comrades Im gonna take a look if trouble is afoot keep running." The man with the shotgun spoke loud enough for the group we assumed was behind us to hear.

The man slung the shotgun as he climbed up the ladder as we kept watch both forward and back. With a whistle from the man we began our climb I was second as usual and followed right behind the man almost as soon as I reached the top I heard gunfire below me as bright flashes of ricocheting bullets hit the walls only two others were on the ladder and out of the way of the bullet fire as adrenaline rushed into our systems we climbed the ladder and after the last man was up closed the manhole.

We were soon met by four heavily armed and armored men.

"You boys resistance?" the man in front said in rough German.

"Were Citizens from outside the city seeking refuge at the American air force base here."

The men looked at his subordinates as if having a silent conversation.

"There right behind us in the manhole we have to go!" One of my comrades yelled as he was panicking.

"Don't you worry. Come on your chariot isn't far we were expecting more though." The man spoke in rough German as he began a brisk jog along with his men two in the rear two in the front hugging against the wall as we went.

The man in front came checked a corner and quickly back tracked telling us to hold.

"What now!" I whispered tersely.

"Hostile patrol I count four standing around some bodies." The solider said as he peeked around the corner.

He signaled the other four and they all got into position and quickly eliminated the patrol.

"All clear come on." He said to us as we continued forward

We met no more resistance as we heard explosions and gunfire all around us. We never saw any of it. The soldiers led us to a parked American vehicle in an alleyway. Two soldiers stood guard and after an exchange we were allowed forward.

"Looks like you're the last guys that can fit into this transport come on lets go." The solider said as we hopped into the vehicle followed by the six men the two went forward into the driver seat and the four sat on the half crouched as the seats were all full of refuges. We went underway and without incident made it into Ramstein air force base. We were free but at what cost.

-two weeks later-

We settled into our new way of life quickly enough and I was put in charge of a store for goods as we continued our lives in relative normalcy albeit every Friday, and Saturday i would have to show up for training they would teach me how to use different equipment and the like. However, every time I got to the training, I remember how many we had on this journey I knew none of them distancing myself yet of the over two thousand that tried only eighty nine of us made it the rest were killed or captured. The youngest anyone twenty five or younger were pressed into service. Every week about that time we would get word from the outside world since that's when the after action reports would come out. The Americans would look at their country homesick and maybe a little angry they cant fight for their homeland but if they were, they never showed it although gruff they were fair in most of their dealings. We got used to the daily sounds of surrender that would come beyond the walls and battlements of the base. More and more defenses were being built all the time choke points, pillboxes, even underground tunnels.

Whatever the future holds I know that the time will come when either this virus finds a cure or we need to find a way to take back this world but until then I will do my part running my store and training for the inevitable battle to come.

Happy Halloween everyone. We probably will move back to America next chapter i don't know the muse speaks when it speaks its 3:25 A.M Running on 6 hours of sleep woke up wrote this chapter in about uh i don't know but it took awhile be excellent to each other and have a good day
