Misato: You know, there is a big reason why I took you in. Pen Pen, he was going to be euthanized.

Rei had suited up and prepared to get inside of Unit 00. 

Gendo: Rei, Unit 00's reactivation test is finally coming up tomorrow.

You gave her her Security Card.
