Chapter Thirty Six- There for you
My phone buzzed and I glanced down. It was from Whitney asking to meeting in the cafeteria.
"I'll catch you guys later." I grab my bag an head there. he was waiting with a book out on the table and head down. I sit myself across from him.
"Hey, got your text." he looked up with a defeated look "What's the matter? Something happen with your Dad again?"
"No, nothing like that. It's just...." he slipped me a piece of paper and I opened it "I wrote that down from my Dad's chart before he left, I wanted to try and figure it out on my own but i don't speak doctor."
"It's what they were recording on the monitors. Recordings of his heart, repository levels and how much oxygen he was getting, pulse. Hourly rounds, and medication administered. All pretty standard stuff." I closed the paper back up "his condition is manageable, providing that he takes the medication."
"What would I do without you." he sighed
"Fail senior year." he chuckled resting his hand on mine "How are you doing? Hows your Mom? I can only imagine how scary it is for the both of you."
"We're doing okay I guess. What happened scared the both of us. He's my Dad. Mia. I can't..." he bowed his head and i hugged him from across the table.
"It's gonna be okay." I try to assure him "You're gonna be okay."
"Hey Whitney...sis." i pull back hearing my brothers voice and i turn to him, he certainly did pick his times to but in.
"Whatever it is, I'm not interested." Whitney snaps at him and goes back down to looking at his text book.
"What about Lana, you interested in her? Or have you moved on to my sister?" he questioned sitting down next to me and my jaw dropped
"Clark!" I exclaimed
"What is it with you and my girlfriend, Kent?" Whitney retorts and I had a bad feeling that the two would start fighting.
"Nothing. We're just friends." he replied and I resisted the urge to say something and roll my eyes. Technically he wasn't lying but Whitney wasn't dumb.
"Think I don't see the way you look at her." Whitney retorts
"At least I pay attention. You've got the most unbelievable girlfriend and you don't even know it because your too busy making puppy eyes at Mia." Clark retorted bringing me into it again. Whitney let go of my hand and grabbed his book and bag
"How I deal with my girlfriend is my business, okay?" he went to storm off
"I saw the heart medication in your bag." Clark stated making Whitney turn around "What's going on Whitney?" Whitney glanced at me as if to ask what he should do. I shrugged leaving it up to him. He came back over.
"My Dad. He's been having problems all week." Whitney admitted
"Is he gonna be okay?"
"Doctors don't know." I got up and walked around the table resting my hand on his arm to comfort him.
"So the sneaking around with my sister, you've known this whole time." he aimed the last part at me, but I kept quiet. "You haven't told Lana yet, have you?"
"I figured she's been through enough pain in her life with her parents. I didn't want her to have to go through it with me." he looked down ashamed and Clark was silent for a moment.
"i don't think you give her enough credit. She's strong. She'd probably understand better than anyone." Clark got up and walked away

Back at home I was working on my homework, when there was a knock at the door. I glanced up seeing Chloe there with a dejected look that was usually reserved for one person. My brother.
"Hey, come in." she entered and flopped on my bed "I take it you've been with my brother. The dejected look is all over you. It's a common side effect of being in my brothers presence." she smiled a little
"He figured that Amy Palmers brother might be invisible boy. Practically couldn't get out of the door fast enough." she explained
"Yeah, Clark is getting a reputation for butting his nose in. Today he practically accused Whitney of having an affair." I replied and that made Chloe sit up straight with acute interest.
"Who with?" I gave her a pointed look "You? He dragged his own sister? What happened, after?" she was in awe.
"Whitney and I showed restraint and did not rise to the hidden dig. Some truths were exchanged and we parted ways." she went to ask more question "Friends talking, not journalist and news source" she nodded not firing anything at me
"Well, you two have gotten closer. In a good way that is."
"What way would that be?" I wondered
"He's opened you up. I've know you for years and no offence but you're very guarded. And you have this air that you can't be approached. Yet even Pete's commented that you've relaxed, yes you get in arguments, the occasional fist fight but you're letting yourself have a friend that you didn't make through Clark. Say what you like about Whitney Fordman, he's been good for you this year." She explained making me smile a little. I don't know what it was but right now I didn't mind so much.
-------
Chloe and I were lounging on my bed, just talking about random things. We had become closer in those couple of hours more than we had done since we met each other. My phone started ringing and I groaned reach over to my bedside table and answering.
"Hello." I greeted
"Hey." Whitney replied
"Everything okay?" I wondered sitting up against my headboard. Chloe gave me a confused look but i just shook my head
"Depends, how you look at it. I spoke with Lana." he stated "I told her what had been going on, she guessed the parts about you, like your brother did. Then I broke things off with her." I turned sharply grabbing Chloe's arm in shock
"You...you did what now? Why?" I questioned
"Because this time, I was the one that needed space. I'm barely hanging on as it is and I didn't want my relationship to be a casualty of it, so I did what I thought was right. I did do the right thing didn't I?" Chloe was miming at me asking what was going on.
"I can't tell you that...not exactly an expert. But if you thought it was the right thing to do, how can I question it? How do you feel?" I answered, to be honest not even i could have saw that coming.
"Oddly freer. Weird huh?"
"Yeah, weird."
"I better get going back to my Dad. See you at school, Bye Mia."
"Bye." I hung up. What the hell just happened? Was I in some alternate universe? Did I just hear right or was I hallucinating.
"What did I miss?" Chloe questioned "Come on it was enough to shock the unshockble Mia Kent it must be news worthy."
"Whitney just broke up with Lana." I stated and her jaw dropped too " He told her what was going on and then broke up with her."
"Then he called to tell you about about it. Wow...just wow. That is like front page news worthy."
"Yeah, that pretty much covers it."
