Chapter Seventeen - Who to trust
Mom and Dad checked the area while I kept an eye on Clark. He was fine generally but I was more concerned at the whole he thought he was kissing Lana and wasn't. That to me seemed like it would do a real number on him more than any injury Tina could have caused if my brother was like any other boy on this earth let alone this town.
"Are you positive you saw her turn back into Tina?" Mom questioned coming back in with Dad.
"We've been talking and we think the meteor shower did something to her bones." Clark stated not answering the question. He was avoiding. Total classic Kent move.
"We're sure and he was talking. i was just sat here listening." I answered on our behalf.
"So she can change her appearance at will?" Dad asks after accepting my answer
"Yeah and it gives her strength. That's how she threw me out of the loft." Clark answered
"No much I was able to kick her on her ass. The meteor rock thats in her didn't affect me and I was well within range to be affected as was Clark." I turn to him with a knowing look.
"What shall we tell the police?" Mom wondered to Dad.
"Nothing. Tina can turn into anyone she wants and we're the only ones who can tell the difference." Clark replied and I sighed. Another thing we yet again get sucked into because of our powers. Yay.
---------
My headache/migraine was easing off to the point where I no longer needed to wear glasses. Tina had gone MIA since being in the loft and she hadn't show up to school which was no surprise since she was now technically a wanted fellon. Despite trying to keep an X-ray eye out for her, my new power continued to flake unless necessary. So I tried to carry on as normal. Going to school, then work and then tutoring Whiney intensely because he had Trig test in a couple of days.
"Well, you might not actually suck on this test." I slid the mock test over "It's improved but still not close to no more tutoring."
"Speaking of. I'm failing history and now science." he sighed glancing down at the paper
"Miss Willimas and Ms Dante told me. Turns out our tutoring sessions are the talk of the faculty. The asked me to help you out." he looked hopeful "Well, you're already being tutored for math two more subjects aren't going to kill me. " He breathed a sigh of relief
"You're an angel." I shuffled awkwardly
"Can I ask how your grade are managing to take a nose dive so quick? Is there something going on with Lana or at home?" I wonder "I only ask because I might need to change my approach if you're gonna skin every class."
"No just bad luck. I guess." he didn't seem to open up so I dropped it
"Okay then, we can pick this up again tomorrow. I will speak with Miss Williams and Ms Dante ask them which areas they would suggest." I got up from the coffee shop sofa and he copied my actions "Oh and meet me on the football field for the last lesson. Bring a ball."
"Why."
"You'll see." I left for home to do my own homework and that night I could see Lana come up towards our house. I dropped my book and headed downstairs. I focused hoping to use the X-ray vision again. Come on. Come on. it did it and I scanned Lana who was with my brother. No green bits. The real Lana Lang. i let out a breath, relaxing. The only trouble my brother was in was the affairs of the heart. I headed back upstairs but left my room door open so that I could see him when he came up. When he eventually did I couldn't not saying anything
"I heard you talking who was with you?" I fake wonder
"No one important." he went to leave
"Oh so not Lana Banana. Did you test her, see if she was really she?" he stepped back into my view point.
"You saw her." he sighed and leaned against my door frame.
"Better yet I control my power to scan her. Real object of your romantic desires. No green unless you count her necklace which I noticed she wasn't wearing as much anymore." he hummed "She has a boyfriend. ergo late night visits are always suspicious. Where she intends it or not."
"She was just passing by. She didn't wanna go home."
"If I wanted her life story I would ask her. Be careful Clark, you already have one person gunning after you. Don't add the jealous ex...again." I warn him then go over to close my door changing for bed.
-----------------
Another school day went by reliably quiet. I now stood on the football field waiting for Whitney when he finally approached football in hand.
"Jacket less today? Don't think I ever seen you not without it. You look like a alien?" I drawl
"Your hilarious, I gave it to Lana. So why are we here?" he wondered throwing me the ball.
"Your test is tomorrow and if your gonna have any chance of passing you need not to be in your head. I have passed on knowledge, tutored you but tomorrow is all you. Which is why we are on your home turf." I gestured to the field "This is where you like most neanderthals are comfortable, tackling and pumping your body with testoraorne. You like a game. Let's play a game."
"What's the game?" i threw the ball over to him
"Pass and question. Well pass to one another and I will ask you questions, random ones that might come up or not at all. Every trig question you get right, you get to ask me a question. Deal?"
"Deal." he agreed and we started tossing the ball back and forth. I started asking him questions and he got the first couple wrong but then got one right.
"Okay, what's your question?" I kept up my end.
"I've heard your friends and your brother make Doctor jokes or call you a doctor . What is with that?" He asked me tossing me the ball and I caught it.
"I plan to got to medical school after a graduate and become a doctor. The jokes usually follow after I've made a comment about something I've read in a medical journal or textbook." I answer then throw him another question which he answers correctly.
"When is your birthday?" he shrugged
"Seriously?" he nodded " February 13th 1987. Yours?"
"April 11th." he answered. I shook my head and continued on. as promised any time he got one right. I answered a question of his. We played for well over a hour and into the late afternoon. That was till my phone rang.
"Hey, Clark?" I answer
"Mia. it's Tina, she killed her Mom and I think she's going after Lana." I turn towards Whitney
"I'll be right there." I end the call and throw the ball back to him and go to grab my things.
"Everything okay?" Whitney wondered
"Yeah, be grateful you don't have a curious and protective twin brother. I better be heading home." I picked up my bag and rapped it over my shoulder but held onto my coat. I went to leave.
"Wait I answered the last question right so you still owe me an answer." he stopped me
"Okay, what is it?" I sigh
"Why do you always seem so alone?" he questioned taking me aback slightly
"Excuse me. I'm not alone. In case your brain missed it i have a brother and friends." I adjust my bag on my shoulder
"You can't fool me Mia Kent. I know that they're your friends through Clark. Lana says that you don't bother to make your own friends or accept anyone who hasn't been introduced to you by Clark. You don't let anyone in, your tighter than fort knox, that you have moments when you look utterly alone. So why?" I didn't really have a answer for that, so i just walked away without giving one.
