Chapter Eleven - extenuating circumstances
As soon as I left the field Principal Kwan stopped me and brought me back to his office. i had a feeling that he had seen what had transpired on the field. Flipping through his filing system he grabbed a folder and sat down. he sighed and adjusted his position in his chair.
"Miss Kent. I saw what happened on the field." he commented flipping through the file he brought out. "Freshman with a exemplary record since the beginning of school, I see. So why does a girl like you, kick the football coach where no man should be kicked?"
"Because Coach Walt is a bully." i answered "He walks around this school, like he owns the place. I work here 25 years is his reason for everything. The community treats him as if he's a god when in reality he is a sociopath and a narsassit. He's a danger to this school. The way he treated my brother just now is nothing compared to how he's treated the other football players Clark is new the others are so used to his temper they no longer see it as a problem. So yeah I got angry at the way he treated my brother, I'm not apologising." I flop back in the chair defiantly, it probably would be the only time that I was so bold because it involved defending my brother.
"Hummm. Miss Kent, I do not condone any kind of violence towards other person staff or pupil at this school. However that being said I do share your concerns toward Coach Walt. For that reason with this incident and the extenuating circumstances surrounding your outburst. I will let you off this one time." My jaw slackened "But let me be clear, the only reason you do not receive punishment is because while i do not agree with your methods. I agree with your reasoning in standing up to the injustices of the world. Do not let it repeat again."
"Yes, sir" I nodded and I was let go.
-------
Principal Kwan's car was on fire with him inside. Clark had saved him from any major damage but he was now in the hospital. I know cars could catch fire, they're cars and they have a flammable liquid running them but something about the incident and how Clark told it to me from his point of view seemed off.
"Principal Kwan's gonna be in the hospital over the weekend." Mom told us as we sat at dinner, she had called to check on what was going on.
"Is he gonna be all right?" Clark wondered
"He's got burns and suffered smoke inhalation but he's gonna be okay." Mom answered grabbing her empty plate. Dad messed around with the leftovers of his food.
"Did anybody see you son?" Dad questioned
"Dad!" I protest. Clark took my hand and shook his head at me. I quietened down letting Clark speak for himself.
"Nobody saw me Dad. I told the paramedics I wrapped my hands in my jacket when I pulled him out." Clark tod him
"Lucky, you were there." Mom rubbed his shoulder with her free hand.
"Well, I kind of missed my ride." we all looked towards Dad
"Look I saw you play. You could have easily hurt any of those boys like your sister hurt Coach Walt. And don't think just because you got away with it at school, you'll get away with it here." he pointed at me
"What are you gonna do, ground me? I don't have a social life you can ban me from and the chores i do with ease." I sass at him. He sighs knowing I'm right and that the normal kind of punishment would have little to no effect on me. He got up from the table taking his plat and glass with him.
"The point is I don't" Clark turned the subject follow his actions. Dad glanced back to him for a moment "Why are we even having this conversation? He's never gonna believe me." I got up with my plate and glass taking it into the kitchen.
"By the way. Coach gave me your old position." Clark informed him "You're looking at the starting tailback for this Friday's game." Dad didn't say anything just walked past him.
"Don't everyone congratulate me all at once." he sighed walked off and i followed him. We went to meet up with Pete and Chloe.
"You're still and idiot, you know." I tell him "But your my twin and that trumps everything, so as much as it kills me to say...congratulations." he laughs a little bit, we could never really stay mad with each other. He draped his arm around me.
"Thanks, sis." he kissed my head and we met with with pete and Chloe. The conversation turned to Pricipal Kwan's incident.
"You guys, it doesn't make sense. Cars don't just spontaneously combust." Chloe declared
"Cops said it was faulty wiring." Clark replied
"I've already got my headline. 'Jockstrap saves Pricipal from burning car!" she stated holding her hand up and moving it across for effect.
"Will you lay of with the jockstraps thing?" Pete requested
"I still can't believe Clarks been blinded by the Friday night lights." Chloe teased my brother making me giggle as we entered the coffee shop.
"I joined the football team not a cult." Clark retorted
"Next thing you know Mia and i will be joining the pom-pom brigade." I didn't laugh at that one as Lana came out in a uniform and apron.
"I hear theres a spot open." she commented walking past us
"Lana, what are you doing here?" Clark questioned as she took a tray off the counter. And turned around moving past us again.
"Taking your order, I hope." she replied
"What? What is this? Some sort of cheerleading charity, like, be a waitress for a night sort of thing?" Chloe questioned following her
"I think Lana broke Chloe." I muttered making Pete snort in a amusement "Quick capture it on Camera, it's a moment not to forget." we followed as well.
"Yes it is except for the cheerleading and charity parts. And tips are appreciated." she handed off the two cups to a table.
"So you're a waitress for real?" Clark wondered letting go of me.
"Even got the perky name tag to prove it." she pointed it out.
"So this is your first day?" I wonder. The Lana Lang joining us mere mortals of working life. I was in a state of shock, honestly and truly.
"Ever." she answered
"Where's your necklace?" Clark questioned.
"Strict dress code. No jewellery and no open toed shoes." she answered
"You look very waitress like." I covered my face at Clarks reply. He was so awkward around her it now began to hurt to just be within five feet.
"Now, if i could only tell the difference between a half caff decaf and a non fat latte" Lana chuckles
"Half caff decaf adds half the caffeine of a regular cup but all the flavour a decaf doesn't have. Nonfat late uses non fat or skimmed milk instead of regular full fat." I couldn't help but correct her and they all turned to me "What I work in a cafe. Can these three have a regular black off and I have a regular latte." I sat down. Chloe and Pete copied but Lana left her tray behind so Clark took it over to speak with her.
"Clark Kent is a football player and Lana Lang is a waitress." Chloe stated
"I know, the shock horror." I exaggerate pretending to faint onto Petes shoulder making him laugh "What the big deal?"I sat back up toying with the flower that was on the table for decoration.
"Nothing I just wanna click my heels and get back to reality"
