When Rogers and Smith found the secret elevator, I think Steven, Warren, Jess, and I all kind of panicked for a moment. We all knew that we had to come up with some sort of lie that would make Rogers and Smith lose interest, but still be believable. I certainly didn't have any ideas, at all, but I guess the benefit of living with at least two geniuses, if not three, was that they were quick thinkers.
Now, I think it was pretty obvious to those of us who were ever actually around Steven when he wasn't pretending to be a loving husband and father, that he wasn't good with people. He wasn't very empathetic, and he understood science and machines a hell of a lot better than he understood people. I found that, because of this, it was better to just tell Steven what you were thinking, instead of trying to make him guess based on context clues, because he wasn't going to be able to very well.
I liked Steven, quite a bit actually. I liked how straightforward and honest he was, and I knew that he cared. Steven may not have been able to understand or relate to how the rest of us were feeling, but he did care about us, and did his best to make any of us feel better if we needed it. I thought Steven was great, and he was smart as heck, but, like I said, he wasn't very good with people. So, he was left floundering when Rogers and Smith asked what the secret elevator lead to.
This meant that Steven's opposite, but equally smart counterpart, Jess, was left to step in. Jess was actually fairly good with people, and was the kind of genius that the media would have fun interviewing, and harassing and stuff, if they were given the opportunity, simply because she was quick on her feet when it came to conversations, and had an award winning smile. Because of this, it was no surprise to anyone when Jess smoothly stepped forward, flashed Rogers and Smith her smile, and make up an explanation for the elevator almost instantly.
"Oh that's just a little area for us all to relax a bit." She exclaimed happily. "There's a little home gym, and an office down there. Warren and Gill here just love to exercise to take their minds off things, and Steven just can't help but throw himself into his work."
"We better take a look." Smith said a bit gruffly, speaking for the first time, and surprising me a bit. All six of us crowded into the elevator, and I knew that tensions were high.
There was no avoiding it anymore. Rogers and Smith were going to see the soot marks on the wall of the lab, find the suit, the samples that Steven had taken from me, and all the research that he and Jess had about me, about Ty, and about anything else. There was no way in hell that Rogers and Smith finding the lab was going to end well, and we all knew it. Which is why I felt Warren grab onto one of my hands, and give me a reassuring look behind the backs of Rogers and Smith, and grabbed onto Steven's hand with his other one.
Rogers and Smith stepped out of the elevator, and immediately saw that Jess had lied to them. Neither one of them looked happy, and they immediately started searching the lab. Steven, unsurprisingly, was not at all happy about that.
"Hey! Wait, you can't-" Steven started to say, and he was stepping forward to attempt to physically stop Rogers and Smith from going through his stuff.
"No, no, no. Steven stop." Warren said calmly, grabbing ahold of Steven's arm to keep him back. Steven was not having any of it though, and I was actually a bit amused to see Steven trying to fight off Warren.
"No! I've spent my whole life in this lab, and I'm not about to let these two dumbasses come in here and mess everything up! This is my lab!" Steven yelled, doing anything he could to get free of Warren, who had to wrap his arms all the way around Steven, pinning his arms to his side, and actually struggling a little bit to hold him back.
Rogers and Smith both just kept going through everything, and pretending that Steven had never said a word. Honestly, I had to admire their ability to just ignore all of Steven's shouting. I had never seen Steven so angry, or even so expressive. He definitely was not willing to just stand by and watch us all go down at the hands of Rogers and Smith without a fight.
We were all worried, and upset, but it wasn't until Smith found two notebooks with brown leather covers in a drawer, that Jess tried to intervene. She stalked forward, and I didn't stop her as she pushed past Warren and Steven. Jess walked right up to Smith, who was holding the notebooks, and snatched them right out of his hands.
"Jess." I called, trying to make Jess come to her senses and give the notebooks back, but Jess didn't do anything but tighten her hold on the notebooks. Smith turned to Jess, and looked down at her, but Jess didn't falter.
"These are our personal property." Jess stated calmly.
"We must confiscate those." Smith said, calmly, but in a way that made it clear that he wasn't willing to back down.
"These are mine, and Steven's. We will be keeping them." Jess stated firmly.
"Give me the notebooks."
"No."
"They are government property now."
"No. They belong to Steven and I, and I won't be giving them to you."
"You will give me the books!" Smith boomed, causing Warren and I to jump a little.
"Over my dead body!" Jess yelled back, equally as loud, surprising all of us. I had never known Jess to be angry before, much less angry enough to yell. Without another word, Jess turned around and made to walked back over to us, but Smith grabbed onto her arm. Jess whipped around angrily to glare daggers at Smith.
"Let go of her!" I bellowed right after Jess turned around. I stepped forward, and Warren, who was still holding onto Steven, looked like he was about to have a heart attack from the stress of having to try to keep Steven, Jess, and I all back, since he was doing a pretty bad job all things considered.
I gently placed a hand on Jess's shoulder, on the same arm that Smith was still holding, and pulled her towards me, forcing Smith to let go of her. I pushed Jess behind me gently, making sure that she wouldn't get hurt, and I stared Smith down. I think, when it came to me, Smith was more unwilling to fight for the notebooks than he was with Jess, because he knew that I could most likely beat him up, since I had super strength and he did not. Jess and I walked away from Smith, and he reluctantly continued his search, along with Rogers.
Warren let go of Steven when we got to him, and Steven used his new found freedom to lunge forward a bit. However, instead of going after Rogers and Smith, he walked up to Jess, and grabbed her arm softly, turning it to see if there was going to be any bruising where Smith had grabbed her. When Steven saw that there was already some finger shaped bruises forming, I was certain he was going to kill Smith. I didn't really blame him either.
Steven pushed past me, pushing me enough that I stumbled away from him, but not enough that I was hurt, and stalked right up to Smith. The rest of us stared in shock, not knowing what was going to happen, and quite frankly, too afraid to stop Steven from doing whatever the hell it was he was going to do.
Steven grabbed Smith by his shoulder, and forced him to turn around, then socked him in the face without warning. Smith stumbled a bit, and Steven let out a small cry of pain as he cradled his hand to his chest. I learned pretty quickly on that there was a right way, and a wrong way to punch someone, but I guess Steven didn't know that, because he definitely punched Smith the wrong way, thus hurting his hand.
Warren surged forward, and grabbed onto Steven, yanking him back. I think Warren was hoping that if he got Steven away from Smith in time, then Smith would somehow be able to just ignore the fact that Steven had punched him at all. It was really a vain hope though, and we all knew it, because the second Steven got aggressive with Smith, he screwed us all over.
Smith grabbed Steven, and forced him to turn around, twisting his arm behind his back, and knocking him down onto his knees. Steven groaned, and arched his back in an effort to relieve the pain that was undoubtedly feeling in his shoulder, but it didn't work. I hurried forward and shoved Smith backwards, forcing him to let go of Steven's arm. Steven hurried to get up and ran back over to where Warren and Jess were, rolling his shoulder, and holding it in pain.
Once Steven was back with them, Warren ran up to me, and grabbed hold of one of my arms, pulling me back and away from Smith before he could react. It was too late though, Smith was pissed at all four of us, which was actually fairly understandable all things considered, and he grabbed onto my other arm, yanking me back towards him. I didn't fact back as hard as I could have, not actually wanting to hurt Smith, since he wasn't a low life criminal. He was a man who was trying to do his job, but pissing us all off in the process.
"Requesting backup immediately, they're getting hostile." I heard Rogers say, and I turned to look at him, finding that he was pressing two fingers against his ear, most likely talking into some sort of bluetooth or something of the like.
After very little time at all, I heard a loud bang upstairs, followed by tons of thudding footsteps. It was clear that a whole team of people had kicked in the front door, and were stomping their way towards the elevator to come down and, most like, apprehend Steven, Warren, Jess, and I. I knew that then was definitely the time to start actually fighting, whether Rogers and Smith were just doing their jobs or not. I yanked my arm away from Smith, punched him square in his nose, and then knocked him over.
I took my opportunity to get away, and pulled Warren back with me. I tried to keep the others behind me, I was the superhero there after all, but it was a lot harder to force Steven, Warren, and Jess to stay back while I handled the situation than it was to keep a random civilian back. They were far more opinionated, self sacrificing, and fiesty than almost anyone else I had ever met when they were angry, meaning they weren't going stand back and watch me take all of the punches.
Rogers and Smith both walked quickly up to us, and they both grabbed onto the closest person they could reach. Jess was forced harshly onto the ground, and had her face smashed against the cold floor. She struggled to get back up, but Rogers had her pinned down, and had her wrists held behind her back. Smith was trying to wrestle Warren down, but Warren was putting up one hell of a fight.
Steven surged forward to try and wrestle Rogers off of Jess, and I ran to Warren's aid. Before anything could really happen, the elevator opened, and a team of three members of a swat team stormed in. One of them immediately walked up to where Steven was trying his best to get Rogers off of Jess, and yanked him back. Steven was shoved roughly to the ground, and had his hands encased in tight handcuffs behind his back.
While that was happening, the other two guys marched over to where Warren, Smith, and I were, and grabbed onto Warren. I immediately went to Warren's aid, shoving Smith down once again, and charging at the man who had Warren. Warren was putting up a fairly good fight, refusing to go down, and doing whatever he could to escape the hold of the man who had him. Before I could reach Warren, I was grabbed around the waist by the last swat guy, and yanked backwards. I was not having any of that.
I knew that the swat team were all dressed up in as much armor and padding as they could have been under most circumstances, but I figured they would be extra protected if they were prepared to come fight someone with superhuman abilities. So I was pretty sure it was safe to assume that there was nowhere I could hit the man who was holding onto me, and actually do some damage, without managing to expose some skin somewhere. Figuring it would be the easiest thing to remove, I quickly curled my fingers around the bottom of the man's helmet, and shoved it up off of his head. Since I could then see his face, I through my elbow back multiple times, hitting the man as many time as it would take for him to finally let me go.
When I was finally dropped, I ran to Warren's aid, but just then, another team of three members of a swat team came out of the elevator, and they came over to Warren and I right away. With two men now wrestling him, Warren was taken down. He was knocked face first onto the floor, just like the others, and kicked a few times just for good measure. I tried to get to Warren, but I had three people trying to force me down too, since only one of the men stayed on Warren, and the man whose face I messed up wasn't giving up yet.
"Let us go!" I yelled as both my arms were grabbed, and pulled away from sides. I yanked them back to me, and tried my damn best to fight back against the men. It wasn't too long before another part of the swat team came through the elevator and took action right away. My arms were spread out to my sides by two men each, and the other two men pulled long black sticks out of holsters on their sides.
There were two, small, high pitched beeps, and the black sticks started to buzz. My eyes widened as I realised what was about to happen, and I fought with all my might to get away, but I couldn't. I was growing more and more afraid, and I was fight as hard as I could, not wanting Steven, Warren, Jess, and I all to go down, and not wanting the ment to put their black sticks anywhere near me.
I felt a surge of energy and strength start to make it's way through me, much like when I had killed Pip. I didn't want to kill the men who were holding onto us, I didn't want to kill anyone, but I did want them to let me go. I was able to see light moving up my legs, but I didn't look down. I instead tried my best to control the energy that was moving through me, so that by time it covered me entirely, I was able to only harm the men who were attacking me, and not turn them into more soot stains.
When the light crawled up my arms, the men who were holding onto them cried out in pain, and let go of me. I didn't bother to find out what happened as I took my first chance to run towards Steven, who was the closest one of us that was pinned on the ground. I planned on using my new found strength to help get him free. I reached him just as the light took me over completely, but just as I was reaching out towards the man who was on Steven, I felt both of the black sticks poke into my back.
I arched my back, crying out it pain as my knees gave out and I fell, feeling my body convulse. I closed saw everyone in my line of sight stare at me in what looked like wonder for a little while, then they all closed there eyes tightly and turned their heads away from me, if they could, as the room seemed to get brighter. I knew that it was actually me who was getting brighter, and I screamed more as I did.
My screams gradually became less human, and more animalistic, I hunched over in pain, then blacked out.
