The Fiery Sun 🍁
Natasha had always loved autumn. The way the leaves changed from green to a fiery red reminded her of the way her feelings for Joseph had slowly grown over the years. It was fitting that this all started in fall-the season of change.
Havenbrook was a small town, the kind where everybody knew each other, and nothing much ever seemed to happen. Natasha spent most of her time helping her parents around the house or hanging out with her best friend, Amara, but there was one person who could always break the monotony of small-town life: Joseph.
Joseph was different. He wasn't the loud, attention-seeking kind of guy that a lot of their classmates were. Instead, he was quiet and thoughtful, always with his nose in a book or a sketchpad. Natasha liked that about him. He had this calm energy, like nothing fazed him. That made him all the more interesting in her eyes.
The only problem was that Natasha had never really talked to him. Sure, they had math class together, and sometimes their paths crossed at the school library, but they hadn't gone beyond polite greetings. Natasha was never the most outgoing person, so starting a conversation with Joseph always felt like an impossible task.
Then, out of nowhere, she got a golden opportunity.
One Friday afternoon, Amara came running up to Natasha in the school hallway, excitement written all over her face. "Natasha! Guess what?" Amara practically shouted, causing a few heads to turn.
"What's going on?" Natasha asked, trying not to get her hopes up.
"There's a job opening at the Corner Café! And get this-Joseph works there after school! I heard he's been doing shifts for months now."
Natasha's heart skipped a beat. She could barely believe it. Working at the same café as Joseph? Was this really happening? "Are you serious?"
"Dead serious. They're looking for one more part-timer. You should totally apply," Amara said, nudging her arm.
It took all of two seconds for Natasha to decide. The next morning, she walked into the café, heart pounding as she handed her application to the manager. When the manager called a week later and offered her the job, Natasha couldn't believe her luck.
On her first day, she stood in front of the café, the crisp fall air swirling around her, sending leaves skittering across the sidewalk. The small café, tucked into the corner of Main Street, looked warm and inviting, its large windows glowing with the light of the setting sun. Inside, she could see Joseph working behind the counter, his dark hair a little messy as always.
Natasha took a deep breath and pushed open the door. The bell above the entrance jingled softly, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee washed over her. Joseph looked up from the espresso machine and, for a moment, their eyes met. Natasha's stomach flipped.
"Hey," Joseph said with a small smile, his voice calm as ever. "You must be the new hire."
"Yeah, that's me," Natasha replied, her voice a little shaky. She hoped he didn't notice.
"Cool, I'll show you around," Joseph said, moving out from behind the counter. Natasha followed him as he pointed out where everything was-the coffee beans, the syrups, the pastries. "It's pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Just let me know if you have any questions."
Natasha nodded, feeling a little more relaxed now that she was in the rhythm of things. As the hours passed, she found herself getting more comfortable. The café wasn't too busy, and the work was simple enough. She and Joseph worked side by side, occasionally making small talk.
"Do you like fall?" Joseph asked at one point, as they cleaned up the counter.
Natasha blinked, surprised that he was starting a conversation. "Yeah, I love it. It's my favorite season. Everything looks so... alive with all the colors, even though things are dying."
Joseph chuckled softly. "Yeah, I get what you mean. There's something about it, right? The cool air, the way the light hits the leaves."
Natasha nodded, feeling her heart swell a little. She wasn't sure if it was the fall air or just being around Joseph, but something felt right.
Days passed, and Natasha began to look forward to her shifts at the café. It wasn't just the extra cash or the free coffee-it was Joseph. They talked more now, about books, music, their plans after high school. Natasha found herself falling for him even harder, not just for how he looked but for the way he thought and saw the world. He was different, and that's what she liked the most.
One evening, the café was quiet, and the two of them sat at the counter, sipping hot chocolate. Natasha gazed out the window, watching the orange sun sink below the horizon, setting the sky on fire.
"Hey, Natasha," Joseph said suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence.
She turned to face him, her heart racing. "Yeah?"
"There's this fall festival happening this weekend," Joseph began, rubbing the back of his neck, a bit awkwardly. "Pumpkin carving, bonfire, all that. Would you want to go...with me?"
Natasha blinked, stunned. She had imagined this moment so many times, but hearing it from him was like a dream. "You mean, like...as a date?"
Joseph nodded, a small smile on his lips. "Yeah. If you're up for it."
Natasha could hardly believe her ears. Her heart was practically doing cartwheels, but she tried to play it cool. "I'd love to."
As they both grinned at each other, the sun dipped fully below the horizon, but for Natasha, everything was just starting to feel bright.
This autumn was turning out to be more magical than she ever imagined.
