1. What inspired you to write The Tests of Time?
I have always enjoyed history, and as a kid I oftentimes found myself sucked into the stories I read about historical figures and moments. So, tv shows and books that wrapped our world's history with fiction was always something that stood out to me. I came across this incredible book written by a really good friend of mine, and her dedication to her story, her encouragement, and her confidence in me is what prompted me to write The Tests of Time.
2. What do you like about writing science fiction?
One thing that is great about science fiction is that it gives you the opportunity to do things that you could never even imagine. I guess that's just the beauty of fiction in general, but growing up I always felt like I was born in the wrong time period. I am drawn to vintage clothing, antiques, and sometimes the lifestyles of times long since past. So, the idea that I could go on adventures in a time machine and meet historical figures that I could only dream about meeting? It's one of the things that made me rekindle my love for writing science fiction.
3. How did you feel when you found out you won in your genre for the Sunflower Awards?
Honestly, I was in shock, and I couldn't stop grinning. It was a huge confidence boost for me. Throughout the process of writing The Tests of Time, there were a lot of ups and downs and thoughts of doubt of whether or not people would like this story. It came to my realization, after some encouragement from friends, that all that mattered in the end was how I felt about the story.
4. Do you have any advice for other writers?
Never give up when you feel stuck, but allow yourself to slow down at times. Before I started writing The Tests of Times, I was on a long break from writing. Writing used to be a huge part of my world, and some personal things in my life brought me to a point where I ended up being unable to write for nearly seven years. I think at times self doubt is a loud voice that can make us feel incapable, but the truth of the matter is that we are more than capable. Set healthy goals for yourself each day - exercises that keep the creative juices flowing, but don't be afraid to give yourself a break to just write something for fun.
5. Who is your favorite character in your story and why?
Without hesitation, I am going to have to say Elinor. I can honestly say that there are things woven into each character of The Tests of Time that makes them so unique, but I have really enjoyed writing Elinor. Throughout the process, I discovered a lot about myself that I never even knew until I met her. Likewise, there is just something so raw and real about her, that makes her feel relatable - and she's unique.
6. What three words best describe your story?
Intense, Thrilling, Romantic
7. Who is an author you love and why?
I'd have to say Ransom Riggs. He wrote the series The Peculiar Children, and I was drawn instantly into the series. Aside from the unusual, epic antique photos that he uses in his books, the peculiar nature of the characters and the story is compelling to me. Having always felt like I was a bit odd, not one to fit in with the crowd, that series reflects a lot of the feelings I have felt.
8. What does your writing process look like?
I think it varies from book-to-book. With The Tests of Time, there was a lot of historical and scientific research and planning done to make sure everything flowed smoothly. I carried a journal with me throughout the entire planning process, and would find myself scribbling ideas regardless of where I was. I try to map out a basic plot regardless, but with certain books I find myself just going for it and polishing it along the way.
9. Who is your favorite fictional character and why?
This is a really tough question. I find myself drawn to many fictional characters for various reasons. I would have to say in fiction, I found myself really drawn to an original character my friend and author, zealprophet27, came up with. She is an incredibly strong character with a unique past, and a strong personality. Might I add, I also really love Jemma Simmons from Agents of SHIELD. A strong woman of science, resilient, confident, but not afraid to share her life with an incredible partner who has her back all the way.
10. What inspires you to write?
Writing is a safe place for me to explore, to cope, to find things out about myself. Having grown up in a bit of a sheltered life, I have always had this desire to go out beyond the walls of my comfort zone and explore. However, people in my life, my struggles with anxiety, made that rather difficult to jump into. So, I did it the safest way I possibly could. Writing also gives me a voice, and it has helped me work through some difficult times in my life. So, what inspires me to write is simply the fact that it allows me to live, to try new things, and I hope that my characters and my stories are an escape or an encouragement for those out there dealing with their own struggles.
