Just Don't Die
The plane lands unsteadily over L.A. I try to calm myself but every aspect of what's happened today is preventing me from doing so. I look over at Christopher again, who is currently reading something from out of the back of the plane seat. Next to him is who I assume to be his twin brother, considering how alike they talk and look. He's looking out the window, I notice how off colored he looks and I have a feeling it must be motion sickness.
When I turn behind me I see David, who has just woken up. He looks just as worried as me, "It's funny, they name them bot fights, as in robot...when in actuality they're androids....well most of them are at least." Christopher says, making me nearly jump out of my seat.
"Now that you mention it, it is kinda strange isn't it." I agree, taking note of his thoughtfulness.
"I'm afraid I haven't-" The plans suddenly jolts again, sending an unpleasant reaction out of him, "-Introduced myself yet...I'm Clayton Brown. And that is my twin brother Christopher." He gives a fake smile.
"I'm-"
"Not to be rude but I don't really care. By the end of this we're going to be enemies anyway...that is if we're still alive." He adds, making me even more nauseous.
"And this is why no one likes you." Christopher buds in, "Please don't listen to him...he's-"
"Being truthful. I'm right you know, I doubt half of us will make it out alive." Clayton cuts him off.
"Please do explain." I say, genuinely curious.
"If your robot-"
"Android." Christopher cuts him off.
"Whatever. Anyway, if your android dies...you take its place. That's how they keep these rounds going. You seriously didn't know that?" He asks. My heart drops and I violently shake my head no.
"Well that's unfortunate." Christopher says flatly, still reading his magazine.
"Well hey, you won last year right. So it shouldn't be that bad. Oh wait, I'm forgetting...you won by pure, unadulterated luck last year. That won't be enough this year sadly." He squints at me. I feel insulted but by now I'm used to it.
"Okay, that one stung a bit. But why are you already making enemies? That'll only increase your chances of dying." I say.
"Because I know I'll win." He says too confidently.
"Would you like me to explain the rounds to you, and the order they'll be in?" Christopher asks, finally looking up from his magazine.
"Yes. That'd be great." I sigh.
"Well they are diving right off the deep end, because round one is a 3 player round, bot vs bot vs bot. The surviving 2 robots from each group continue onto round 2, where they will next be put into a skyscraper. The idea is to reach to the top before the AI and other traps catch up. This one usually takes out a whole bunch of them." Christopher pauses and takes a minute to recollect himself, "Round 3 is when things really begin to pick up. The remaining players must switch androids with other players at random, and compete in one huge round. The remaining three from round 4 continue to round 4. And in round 4, the remaining 4 verse the 4 players of robots who died first."
"So basically don't die in round one at all costs." I recap.
"Yes. Don't die in round 1." He repeats, "Or rounds 2, 3, and 4."
"Just don't die." Clayton sighs impatiently. Finally I feel the plane landing. As we all get up to leave, I see David standing as well. I look at how he's grabbing people's luggage for them, letting them exit the isles first. And I can't help but think to myself;
I'm going to die.
