CHAPTER TWO
"THIS IS MIN YOONGI.
He's in my science class and he'll be joining us for lunch."
Jimin looked up from his food at the lunch table. Watching as Jin motioned to his left, asking for the boy to sit down. Jimin wasn't really expecting someone knew to join their group. And he would be lying if he said he was happy about it.
Jimin's heart seemed to chipper slightly when he recognized the boy in front of him as the one from his literature class. He watched intently as Yoongi sat down carefully beside Jin, taking out his lunch -which was small, nothing more than a sandwich and an apple- and waving at the group. Yoongi's soft gaze fell onto Jimin's piercing ones, the boy offered a small smile -which Jimin swiftly ignored- before staring down at his food in embarrassment.
"Fun!" Hoseok said happily and clapped his hands together, "It was starting to get boring with these guys." He rested his arm on the table, cupping his face in his right hand. "I'm Hoseok, your hope, angel. But you can call me Hobi."
Hoseok offered a wink that made Yoongi blush slightly and Jimin continued to stab at his pasta as he tried his best not to roll his eyes in an annoyance he's never felt before. Why are they welcoming him so quickly? Jimin sure as hell wasn't going to. What if he was a homo?
He knew his mother wouldn't be too pleased finding out he made friends with another "flamboyant" boy. He wasn't homophobic, he was fine with the fact that most of his friends were gay. Jimin was just afraid of the types of things his mom would make him do if she found out another one joined their group.
Jimin decided to keep his distance, just to make sure.
Besides, what would his father say?
Namjoon shook his head, shoving Hoseok lightly. "Anyway, I'm Namjoon. I hope we could all be friends."
Jin smiled and perked up when he noticed another boy, much younger than the rest of them strolling up to the lunch table. He pointed, "That's Jungkook. He's the youngest so feel free to smack him if he's disrespectful."
Jungkook waved, mumbling a "Yo." Before taking a seat beside a quiet Jimin, who was-still- stabbing his food and shoving it in his mouth.
The table grew quiet and Jimin felt all eyes on him. The feeling made him uncomfortable, a rumbling was felt in his throat and his hands shook slightly. He hated being the centre of attention, especially of something he wanted no part in. Maybe if he just continued eating they would leave him alone. But of course nothing ever goes his way.
Yoongi glanced down Jimin's face, watching in friendly amusement and slight interest as Jimin repeatedly assaulted his food. Maybe Yoongi just needed to try the gentler approach?
"You're in my literature class right? If I remember correctly, it's Jimin isn't it?" Yoongi spoke up softly and Jimin recognized his voice to be something almost sweeter than honey. He felt his heart lurch again, and unfamiliar feeling washed over him in sudden waves. A feeling he could only describe as embarrassment.
And maybe something else. He wasn't too sure.
But what he did know was that he didn't want to stick around long enough to find out.
Jimin stood from his seat despite not answering the older's question. He handed the rest of his food to Hoseok, who had come without a lunch that day.
He muttered "I have to go." Before taking off in the direction of the cafeteria doors. Leaving his friends confused and Yoongi, disappointed.
"Was it something I said?" Yoongi whispered to Jin, who left a supportive hand on his shoulder.
"No, he just needs some time to settle in with people." Jin reassured, although he felt uneasy about the younger walking away so quickly, he left him be. But Jin would definitely talk to him tomorrow.
Jimin decided that taking a walk would be the best outlet for his frustrations. Although he didn't understand why he left so suddenly, he was glad that he did. Jimin wasn't good at confronting his feelings-and if anything- running away from his was something that he was best at.
That was the easiest route so why not just take it?
Jimin already had enough with seeing Yoongi for one class and now he has to see him for class and lunch? He sat under the shade of an apple tree in the school's garden. Jimin watched as birds soared through the clear, cloudless, blue sky, flapping their wings as the wind seemed to carry them across land and waters. Jimin used to think that if he closed his eyes and listen to the birds sing long enough, maybe he could fly too? Graze his hand over the waves of the ocean as he flew to wherever he desired. He could sit in the clouds and watch the world darken and erupt into city lights from above.
Somethings are just not as easy as we'd like them to be. Jimin supposed. He opened his eyes and looked across the colourful variety of flowers and vegetables in the garden.
It was days like these where Jimin missed his father.
Ever since he's been gone his mother seems to be loving him less and less. They were happy when they were together, and now,
they were nothing.
"Jimin-ah! You have to stay still for the photo!" The man said, a smile on his face as a 6 year old Jimin kicked around in his lap excitedly.
His mother laughed, removing her eye from the viewfinder of the old polaroid camera. "I wish I hadn't given him so much candy!"
The small family laughed as little Jimin jumped off his father's lap and to the play ground, where his mother took blurry pictures of him running around the play structure.
He didn't get a picture with his father that day and looking back he really wish he had. Because that was the last time they were all truly happy, his parents at least.
There was a part of Jimin that knew his father wasn't okay, that something was plaguing his mind. But it was because of the idea that adults were able to handle everything themselves that Jimin didn't think much of it. Yet the worst things happen to some of the best people.
The school bell signalling that lunch had come to an end had snapped Jimin out of his thoughts and he sighed, getting up and walking down the garden path towards his school.
Hopefully he hasn't got anymore classes with that Yoongi kid.
