CHAPTER ELEVEN
The sky shined like crystal waters and the wind blew so gently it almost tickled at Jimin's skin as he ran through the playground, a soft hand leading him to wherever the hell he was going.
"Tae! Slow down!" Jimin giggled, his hair bouncing every step he took. He watched as the boy turned back without stopping their journey.
"No way! We're getting closer!" The boy laughed, tugging Jimin as he began to speed up towards the tree line.
He met Taehyung at the playground often and the two young boys had always met at the swing sets before going off on what they loved to call their "Super Epic Dope Adventures.". Jimin remembered the first time he met Taehyung at the park when they were six years old, Tae had fallen off the swing set and cut his knee and his parents were far enough that they couldn't see the tears that gathered in his little eyes. Jimin had been the only one to stop to see if he was okay and Taehyung wouldn't leave him alone after that- not that Jimin minded in the first place- Taehyung was fun to play with and his hands were always warm, no matter the weather.
Jimin would ask to go to the park down the road every day since then and every time, Taehyung would be there waiting on him.
"We made it!" Taehyung cheered, turning to Jimin to give his signature smile. Jimin smiled back in response and looked around to where they were.
They weren't too far from the playground and they had gone a couple of metres past the treeline of the small woods they had in their city. There was a big, great oak tree in the middle of a clearing. It looked so peaceful, almost magical. There were small animals that walked around further into the trees and birds sat perched onto the branches nearby.
"My papa told me about this spot," Taehyung said. "I wanted to show you."
"It's pretty," Jimin supplies, "Have you ever climbed trees before?"
"Of course I have!" Taehyung huffed, marching towards the big oak tree before stopping just in front of it, scratching his head lightly. Jimin laughed, skipping towards Taehyung and standing just alongside him.
"It's okay that you haven't Tae! It's easy!" Jimin encouraged.
The two boys had climbed to this first branch, Jimin not allowing them to climb any higher. The two sat there next to each other, hands innocently intertwined with one another and watching the other kids play in the far distance. They laughed and joked around for what felt like hours, smiling at each other and having the best time of their lives.
"Taehyungie, you're my bestest friend you know?" Jimin said childishly.
Taehyung beamed, the sun having nothing on the smile he had on his face. He gripped Jimin's hand tighter as he spoke, "You're my bestest friend too, Jiminie!"
Jimin smiled back, his eyes disappearing behind his chubby cheeks. "Let's stay friends forever, okay?"
Taehyung held up the hand that wasn't holding Jimin's and held up his pinky finger. "Promise!"
Jimin lifted his own tiny pinky finger, wrapping it in Taehyung's before shaking it. "Promise."
The two boys began to make their way back down the tree and towards the park, the sun was beginning to set, casting an orange glow to everything around them. They were sure their parents were waiting for them both.
They saw Jimin's father waiting for him in the distance, the man lifting his arm and waving him over, a soft smile on his face.
The smiled dropped when he noticed the boy's hands wrapped around one another, yet he quickly picked it back up again as the two boys began to get closer.
Taehyung looked around before spotting his mother, sitting on a bench in the distance and seemingly packing up their things. "I gotta go Jiminie! My momma's gonna be looking for me!"
Jimin stopped a couple of metres away from his father. Looking at Taehyung as the boy also turned to face him.
Jimin felt a soft peck on his left cheek and smiled as Taehyung pulled away from him.
"See you tomorrow Jiminie!" Taehyung cheered before running off to his mother, who smiled at Jimin before taking her son's hand and walking away.
Jimin waved. "See you!"
He turned to his father and walked towards him with the biggest smile on his face. But when Jimin looked up to see his father's face his steps stuttered slightly.
His father had a sullen look on his face, masked by furrowed brows and pointed eyes. His father crouched to his height and grabbed Jimin's shoulders in a less than pleasant grip that had Jimin wincing slightly.
"Jimin-nah" His father spoke firmly, "I understand that you and Taehyung are good friends, but you two are not allowed to hold hands or kiss each other's cheeks ever again. Do you understand."
Jimin nodded, his father was alway right about a lot of things and Jimin wasn't the type of child to disobey. Jimin loved his papa so he had to listen to him. But he couldn't help but be curious.
"But papa, why?" Jimin asked, his head tilting to the side slightly in confusion.
"Because Jimin." His father started, "Boys don't kiss other boys, its against the word of god."
Jimin looked into his father's eyes and though he didn't know it at the time, he could see the sadness and devastation behind his father's eyes. The frown on his face trembled lightly and he almost looked like he was holding back his tears.
Why was he so sad?
"Do you wanna upset God Jiminie?" His father asked softly, his hands soothing his son's arms.
"No, I don't want to make you sad either papa." Jimin replied innocently, wanting to make his father happy.
"Good boy, then you won't kiss or hold hands with Taehyung again okay?"
"Okay, papa."
***
It was late into the night now and Jimin was getting out of bed, his throat parched and head reeling after a particularly disorienting dream. He dreamt of a cabin deep in the woods, hidden by the thick trees and bush. He could hear the flies and bugs buzz around and he could almost feel the running river water close by. But everytime he tried to move closer to the river he would feel more and more suffocated the closer he got. So he never went far.
Jimin waked down the stairs and into the dark of his living room. The stove light in the kitchen was always on, so Jimin let the light guide him into the kitchen and to the cabinets. He stood on his tip toes on top of his little stool to reach the plastic cups his momma got just for him before dragging the stool under the sink and filling his cup with water,
He heard heavy footsteps downt the stairs before he heard the door creak open quietly and click shut. Jimin stood on his stool, turning towards the sound of the door shutting before hopping off and walking towards the window.
Jimin glanced at the clock before stopping at the window.
3:33 am.
Who was leaving so early in the morning?
He pulled apart the curtain just enough to peek an eye through. Jimin's eyes widened as he set his eyes on his father, walking down the path towards a black car. The driver gets out and greets his father with a hug, arms slinking themselves around his father's waist and gives him what looks to be a kiss on the cheek. Jimin gasped, placing his hand over his mouth as if someone would hear him so late into the night.
Who was that?
He was sure that wasn't his mother. Jimin's mother was shorter, and more petite with long hair, she definitely wasn't as muscular as the person standing in front of his father right now.
Jimin watched, stunned and stuck to the floor as he watched his father rake his hand through the mysterious person's short hair. The driver opens the passenger door for his father before walking back to the driver's door. The two get in and speed off into the night.
Jimin decides to go back to bed.
When he sees his father the next morning, Jimin doesn't say anything.
