Three months later
A warm, hazy veil of sunshine shone through the windows on a sleepy Sunday afternoon, faintly illuminating the silhouettes of a boy and a girl, who were engaged in a heated battle.
"You traitor!"
He smirked when he heard her anguished yells, satisfaction bubbling inside him. His fingers furiously worked on the console, and he watched triumphantly as his character on the screen zoomed to first place, leaving her behind him.
"You threw that shell, didn't you?" she accused him. Gnashing her teeth together, she veered the joystick and attempted to go faster, but he was already way ahead.
"Mario Kart is a fun game," he stated casually as his character slid up a ramp and landed perfectly. She scowled and knew he said it intentionally to annoy her.
"Shut up," she growled and leaned forward, eyes peering intensely at the screen.
"Too late, I'm winning," he said in a sing-song voice and his character sped across the finish line, little fists raised in celebration. A few seconds later, her character also finished.
She threw down her console in frustration. "Man, it's just impossible to beat you!" she exclaimed.
"Amateur," he teased, the corners of his lips quirking up.
She glared at him, beams of hard light practically shooting from her eyes. "Wipe that smugass grin off your face or I'll smack you in the face."
"Yeah, yeah," he muttered dismissively. "That's very threatening."
The girl crossed her arms. "I kinda miss it when you were super quiet and didn't sass me as much."
He snorted and reclined against the couch. "Too late to regret talking to me."
She pouted. "Well yeaaaah. I kinda thought you would be very shy, but in fact, you just like to make fun of me."
"Obviously. You react way to dramatically to most things." He wasn't even attempting to deny it. And it's fun to see you act that way, he privately added.
Silence washed over the duo as his fingers idly roamed across the console, checking out the new items he'd just unlocked. Meanwhile, she flopped down on the couch and curled up in a ball on a warm pool of sunlight. The quiet noises of the house, the slight rustle of curtains, the sound of the breeze outside, all lured her into dreamland.
He shut down the game and put down his console. All was calm, all was quiet. He wondered why the ever-talkative, chatterbox girl hadn't said something yet, so he turned around and found her fast asleep on his couch. A small smile quirked on his lips. No wonder, she must've been exhausted from playing video games all afternoon.
He knew it was creepy to stare at someone while they slept, but it was just so rare to see her, the sun, and dare he say, his sun, quiet down.
Her squished face poked out from her arm, a relaxed expression on her face. He blinked. She looked so peaceful, like an innocent child.
The sun was asleep, yet she was still giving out mellow rays of warmth.
It was funny how three months ago, if someone had told him she would be over at his house and playing (read: losing) Mario Kart with him, he would've laughed.
Before their big fight and make-up, with his annoyance and her stubbornness had caused him to dislike her. Always complaining about her blinding rays and scorching influence over the others. Selfishly thanking her for the little bit of warmth, yet never saying it. Knowing she was there, but not appreciating her.
He did see the sun simmer down, which was an unfortunate incident he was still convinced was all of his fault. The cold, tired sun. Barely glowing, her sunshine snuffed out.
But all that time before, he'd never appreciated her beauty.
The beauty of the sun at sunset, when she was done with the day, and just wanted a quiet little nap. When she decided to leave, promising to come back tomorrow with a cheerful wave. And when she left, gorgeous splashes of colour and emotion streaking behind her.
He was oddly content with her presence now. She always said hello to him whenever they met, and he would wave back good-naturedly. She made fun of him and he would make fun of her in return.
They were still trying to deal with their differences, of course, but they were learners- fast learners.
She was no longer so boisterous and blinding and irritating his eyes, but-
She was still his sun
Always jokingly pouting whenever he sassed her.
Her lively chuckles sounding by his ears every single day.
Was she still burning him alive? Maybe.
Most people would be affected by her rays of heat, resulting in a loud cluster of exhilarated partygoers around her.
Not him, though.
As happy as he would be, he was never one to party
Quietly, silently at the side, secretly admiring her
the wild tornado, the warm sun, the embodiment of life and radiance.
Wondering how a person like her could exist
and wondering how
She went from being downright aggravating
To someone, he would admit, he quite liked.
