People liked to say that she liked him. That she had a crush on him.
He didn't like her that way. Heck, he didn't like her at all.
(But she had like five potential love interests at the same time, so it wasn't a special thing.)
Perhaps people thought they would be an interesting match with their conflicting personalities. Maybe they thought it was "cute", the sunny girl paired with the grumpy boy.
(However, like he said, he believed whatever relationship they could have would end up with, well, conflict.)
She would always bounce towards him with this huge, sunny grin, and ask him to smile more.
"All I want is to see you smile!"
He knew he didn't smile a lot; that was true. But sometimes, occasionally, a well-timed joke could cause his lips to quirk upwards too. Contrary to popular belief, he wasn't an emotionless robot.
And she'd probably seen him smile before. Unless she was really, really bad at observing.
(He wouldn't admit that he sometimes laughed at her jokes. They could be mildly entertaining at times. But she was still really annoying. Her bad qualities far outweighed her good ones.)
But whenever he began to think she wasn't so bad after all, that crazy, aggravating part of her would return again with gusto. The sun shoved in his face, blinding his eyes.
And on and on it would go
a never-ending cycle of "give her a chance" and "I don't want anything to do with her".
His sun brought life, but she was also too bright, too blinding-
He could not look directly at her.
He could not see her underneath that noisy, vivacious facade.
And so, he never knew what she could be.
