chapter one
The cold air was filled with tension. People crowded together like cattle ready to be slaughtered. Single filled the men, women and children entered the camp. Eliezer stood at the top of the fence, watching over the crowd; like a hawk stalking prey. The weight of the gun in his pale white hands felt like the weight of the world. His heart began to beat faster as the gates began to lower.
Sirens blared to loud and to long to allow any single thoughts to enter anyone's mind. Darkness enveloped the area like it was a funeral. The only lights were from the officers who stood along Eliezer. The air was stagnant like it was holding its breath.
"We understand you're afraid, we all are but if you all remain calm this will make everything a lot easier!" A voice echoed over the sound of everything, yet was barely heard. The people pushed and pulled as the gates creaked to life.
Eliezer watched in horror as women begged the men to let their children inside the shelter. He watched as men charged at the thick glass walls, trying to get inside the only heated structure on the west coast. He knew, like everyone else, that those left outside the camp were going to die. He closed his eyes and followed his orders. He held the gun up and put his shakey finger over the trigger.
Time had frozen as he opened his eyes. His fellow officers had already began their orders. Men, women and children clung to life outside a gate as bullets began to riddle the person they once were. Bodies began to pile up as the metal door collapsed, leaving millions more to perish.
Minutes passed and dragged on like they were days that would never end. The chaos did not stop. The metal doors banged shut and with a deafening click all those inside knew there was no way outside. One man began to erupt in emotion, he cried In agony. All the men turned to face the men in distress. The man put the gun to his head.
Eliezer pushed his fellow men aside and ran to the man. He wanted to save someone today but instead took lives. This was his chance at being the hero he signed up for. However like before, he couldn't save everyone. His black boots echoed on the metal floor as he ran as fast as he could. No one else seemed to intervine, they all seemed to afraid. The man wept and screamed as Eliezer stepped into range but it was to late. The young man pulled the trigger and collapsed like a rag doll. Eliezer stopped as blood now clung to his face and neck like a magnet. He was close enough to touch him but far enough away to fail him. Inside the man's free hand was a picture.
