Chapter 2
She trudged the halls of her school, exhausted from the night before. "Alex!" A familiar arm dropped around her shoulder, making her tense. Devan.
She slowly twisted around, pasting a half smile on her face. She could only hope he didn't notice the dark smudges that hung beneath her green eyes or the distress that lingered in her gaze. "What's up?"
"Want to hang out late with the guys and I and spend the night over?" No! She opened her mouth to let out an excuse, but paused before the words could slip free. She needed to tell him about last night, but it felt altogether wrong.
"Sure!"
They continued down the hall with Devan's arm still draped over her shoulder, "By the way, where did you go last night?"
Her face flushed, forgetting her late night escape, "My mom made me come home early."
He winced, "Angry?"
"You bet."
They stopped at the end of the hallway, "This is where I leave." As much as she didn't want to smile after all that had happened, his happiness had always seemed contagious.
Alex threw herself down on Devan's mattress, feeling as if she could simply sink in and never leave. She bounced into the air as the large teen boy fell down onto the bed next to her, his warm arm pressing into her own. "That party was insane!"
She smirked, "Who knew someone could party that hard."
He groaned, shoving his face into a pillow resting next to him, "I'm scarred for life."
As she watched the boy next to her happily teasing, before the memory of the man from the night before suddenly consumed her thoughts. The contrast of the two was more than frightening, it horrified her. As much as she wished she didn't need to talk to the other boy, she did.
A crash caused green eyes to spring open. It's him. She sprung off the bed, wanting to appear as large as possible. Her stomach twisted as she waited for his figure to make an appearance within the door frame. Before she could wipe the sweat off of her trembling hands, he was standing beside her, his eyes cruel. "You again."
Her nails dug into her skin as an attempt to compose her breathing. "Yep."
He let out a groan, "This seems to happen a lot but it's usually never the same girl twice." He spared her a glance, "What's your name again?"
"Alex Wills... What's yours?"
"Graysen King... I really need to stop drinking. I never seem to remember bringing anyone home with me." Graysen shamefully scratched his head, cutting her a guilty glance.
The terrified girl could feel the blood drain out of her face as she heard the man whom had her boyfriend's face announce himself as Graysen. She knew of Grayson Cross whom was a close friend of Devan, but this was not him. Who was Graysen? An identical brother Devan hadn't mentioned? At first she had simply believed Devan was sleepwalking around (which she still sort of did), but she did have to admit it was eerie. She forced herself to nod, to keep herself together as she processed the information she had just obtained. The thought of Devan being hurt by whatever was going on right now was enough to make her stay and talk to the imposter, no matter how much she wanted to break down into tears.
Alex entered the library, taking extra care to be silent as she searched the shelves. The day before she had been at her part-time job at the ice cream store when she overheard a fellow employee talking about her mother. The girl sporting a blonde pixie cut was leaned up against the counter, chatting with her friend.
"My mom was just admitted last week." Her voice was hushed, "She has a split personality."
The girl she was talking to frowned, "What's that?"
"Where she has different personalities in her body, it's freaky."
Alex replayed the conversation in her head as she searched the messy aisles. Split personalities. Grasping a novel mentioning something about mental illnesses, she sat down to read. As the burgundy-haired teen flipped through the pages, she felt her chest constraint as she realized it matched up perfectly.
The slender girl ran out of the library towards where she knew Devan would be- the football field. Nearly breathless by the time she reached the empty expanse, she instantly noticed Devan. He stood out to her, seeming glowing with happiness as he ran around with his friends. He was free. She knew she shouldn't bother him with it but she had to, she had to ruin this moment.
"Devan!" He froze at the sound of her voice, instantly leaving the game and running towards her.
When he stood in front of her, he reached out his arms to hug her but she cut him off before he could get into greetings. "I'm sorry, Devan, but I have to ask, do you have any family? Like a brother, perhaps?"
He stopped, confused by the question. "Nope."
"The name Graysen doesn't ring a bell?" He opened his mouth to speak, "Other than your friend." Devan shut it once again and shook his head.
Nodding numbly, she quietly stretched up to place a kiss on his cheek. As she turned to continue her search, he gripped her wrist, pulling her towards him. Before he could kiss her, she pulled away, not wanting to kiss him when the only thing she could think about was the issue with Graysen. It wasn't romantic thinking, after all, how could she feel that way about another boy? Still, he flooded her mind as she talked to Devan.
Alex murmured, "Sorry," before rushing back inside the building, leaving the confused boy on the field.
