There were a few things about Jungkook that would become blatantly obvious once you began to get to know one. The most obvious being that he was extremely competitive. Hyuna had once said it had something to do with his zodiac sign, but Jungkook didn't believe in any of that - he just always wanted to win. If he didn't, he would beat himself up, and overanalyze the situation to see where he went wrong.
It didn't matter who it was, if somebody challenged him, he'd take to offer.
"Jungkook you don't have to-" Yoongi's words fell on deaf ears as Jungkook took off his baseball cap and tied his unruly hair up in a makeshift bun with the elastic band that he kept around his wrist. His heart was weak but his head was strong, and suddenly it didn't matter that it was Taehyung who was challenging him - because he was going to win either way. "At least put your damn helmet on you idiot."
But Jungkook couldn't hear him, not as he pressed play on his music once more. Hyuna always called him stupid for donning this personality trait. 'It won't show that you're weak if you back down, you know.' She would always say, but her words never struck a cord. Even if he couldn't always win, he wanted everyone to know that he had the fight in him to try.
He popped the tail of his board, his expression stern as he brought his left foot to step on the raised front of the board and send him moving forwards. His heart was fluttering as he dropped into the bowl, wind rushing against his face as he leaned to the left and rode the side of the most shallow part. He never skated in front of people before - especially not somebody that he held in such high regards - but it was if his adrenaline was blocking everything out. As he neared the coping and bent his knees to prepare to fly out of the bowl, he remembered why he loved skating so much.
He caught air as he flew out of the bowl, music blaring in his ears as he was launched up into the open air. His eyes remained sharp and focused as he grabbed the bottom of his board quickly while in midair, a smile playing on his lips as his board slammed back onto the concrete surface and he was sent ripping towards the deeper end of the bowl.
Taehyung's eyebrows remained furrowed as he watched the younger completely tear up the park that had become a second home to him. He was a flash of grey sweatpants and baby blue grip tape as he zipped around the bowl, clothes clinging to his body as the wind pressed against him.
He wondered silently why he had never seen Jungkook here before if he was this talented, absentmindedly turning one of the wheels on his own board with his finger.
He observed the serene look on his face as Jungkook grinded his board against the coping, before airing out on the opposite end and landing on the level pavement that surrounded the concave bowl. He skated precariously around the edge, ollieing up and effortlessly transitioning into a tre flip as if it was second nature to him.
It wasn't even on Jungkook's mind that Taehyung has his eyes glued to him as he dropped back into the bowl, but oh did it slip into his mind as his board suddenly flew out from underneath him, sending him crashing down onto the concrete.
His back hit the ground first, eyes flying open as the wind was completely knocked out of his lungs. His headphones had been ripped out of his ears when he fell, and now his ears were ringing. He was in a daze as he lay on the cold ground at the bottom of the bowl, body hardly even recognizing the pain that had started to set in.
He had fallen numerous times in the time that he had been skateboarding, it was all part of the learning process after all. There was something though, about the way his knee was throbbing intensely that had him worrying about what he could've done to it.
"Jungkook!" The worn soles of Yoongi's tennis shoes scuffed against the concrete as he slid down the side of the bowl and ran towards his friend - Taehyung was following not that far behind. "Holy shit, man. Are you okay?" He reached his hand down to haul the brunette up, but his fingers were quickly slapped away by Taehyung's hand.
"He could've fucked up his head." Taehyung explained. "Leave him for a second." The redhead crouched down beside Jungkook, his calloused hand nudging Jungkook's shoulder gently. "What hit the ground first?" Jungkook squinted as he looked up at Taehyung, lips frozen shut as the older boy looked down at him. The afternoon sun backlit his vibrant hair, his loose black t-shirt was slipping off of his right shoulder, the silver chain that he always wore glinting in the sun.
"My back." Jungkook managed to get out, his face becoming flushed with colour as his eyes overanalyzed every single aspect of Taehyung's face. His bottom lip looked as if it was healing from being split. The bruise that Jungkook has noticed on his cheekbone earlier had a partner that was blooming around the outer corner of Taehyung's eye, though it looked as though it was almost healed. He had freckles; they were faint, but noticeable.
"I've had slams just as bad as this before." Taehyung smiled softly, offering his hand out for Jungkook to take. "I've got some water in my bag, you can have some if you'd like." Jungkook nodded softly, slowly reaching up and grasping Taehyung's hand. It was larger than his own, rough callouses scratching against the smoother skin of his own palm. He allowed Taehyung to haul him up, grimacing as he placed weight onto his knee.
"I think I overextended my knee when my board flew out from under me." He spoke softly, a look of concern flashing across Taehyung's face at his words. The older boy took Jungkook's arm and wrapped it around his shoulder in order to offer him some support as the two of them walked over to the edge of the bowl.
"You have got to stop being so competitive, Jungkook." Yoongi sighed, walking over and ruffling his hair. "It's gonna get you killed someday.
"It's my fault." Taehyung shrugged. "I'm the one who challenged him in the first place." He helped Jungkook climb up the shallow end of the bowl, then walking him over to the rock that all of his belongings were at.
"It was my fault for taking the challenge." Jungkook shrugged, wincing as he sat down. "Not your fault." Taehyung merely hummed in response, reaching into his backpack and pulling out a bottle of water that he tossed over to Jungkook.
"Hoseok?" He called. "Do you still have that old grease rag?" He bent down and rolled the bottom on Jungkook's pant let up, a deep frown settling onto his lips as he noticed that the younger boy's knee had already begun to swell. Hoseok quickly jogged over to the two of them and tossed the cloth in Taehyung's direction. "I bet you tore something."
Jungkook's eyes widened, watching as Taehyung wrapped the rag around his knee and tied it almost painfully tight. "This'll hardly do anything, but it's what I usually do to give the joint some extra support." He looked up at Jungkook from where he was kneeling on the ground, his caramel brown eyes glinting. His hair was a mess, definitely in need of the hair tie that hung around his wrist - but it also looked so wonderful at the same time. The harmony between the soft and rugged sides of his appearance were so endearing.
"Thank you." Jungkook mumbled, breaking Taehyung's eye contact and looking to the side.
Taehyung shrugged his shoulders and stood up, brushing off his pants. He grabbed his jacket from off of the rock, laying it over Jungkook's shoulders and ruffling his hair.
"You have a lot of... how should I put this..? Spunk." Taehyung chuckled. "You remind me... of myself. Which I like." He turned around, picking up his own skateboard and walking towards the edge of the bowl.
"I hope, if you're feeling better, I'll see you here more often."
