Summer 9
“So how’s the camp, Capt? Leaving us alone so you can fuck around?”
“Hey,” Yeonjun glared at his setter. “It’s because I know you guys will do a great job without me,” he reasoned and slams the ball on the floor causing it to bounce so high and he spiked it the turn at Taehyun. “And I have good news.”
“What? He answered you already? You’re dating now?” Taehyun didn’t even sound interested.
“Nope!” Yeonjun replied and smiles. “We’re going to have our manager.”
“Oh!? Really? Who?” Now, Taehyun looks interested.
“I don’t know him yet but he sounds capable and trusted so, I just let Beomgyu,” Yeonjun replied.
Taehyun nods, “Okay, I trust your judgement,” he remarks. “I already signed us up for Summer Tournament as well and we’re today is our first practice,” he said.
“Can I leave for one day?” Yeonjun asks for permission.
Taehyun raise his eyebrow and stops from bouncing with the ball. “Where are you going now?”
“I’ll visit my parents for a day… with Beomgyu,” Yeonjun smiles and wiggles his eyebrows. “It’s just one day, punk!”
Taehyun forcedly throws the ball at Yeonjun’s chest that made the other cough. “10 laps, 15— no, 25 dives. Go,” Taehyun commanded before walking out. “Line up! I’m going to toss!” he shouted at the other members.
“Ah that guy,” Yeonjun flinches and massage his chest. “Why is he mad again at me?” he muttered and started running in laps.
After their usual practice, of course Beomgyu arrived to give the team some energy drinks. In this case, the whole Kairos already voted him as their captain’s lover.
“Thank you Beomgyu! You shouldn’t have to, really,” Taehyun expressed with a smile.
“No worries, this is my way of supporting you guys,” Beomgyu replied. “Ah, tonight will arrive the manager that I said. He was supposed to be here earlier but his flight delayed,” Beomgyu replied.
“From Seoul?” Taehyun asks and gulp on the bottled drink. If you’re wondering where’s Yeonjun, he’s cooling down with the members and giving some an earful.
“Nope,” Beomgyu answered. “Italy. I thought I can’t pull him off his work,” he chuckles after. “Good thing I have some connections.”
“A-ah,” Taehyun chuckles awkwardly. “I’m suddenly curious how wide your connections are.”
“It’s nothing,” Beomgyu shrugged his shoulders. “I’m just a freeloader.”
“Hey! Why are you leaving me out of the conversation?” Yeonjun arrives while frowning.
“Jeez, he’s so annoying,” Taehyun rolled his eyes. “I’ll be at the apartment, Beomgyu just call me if he already arrives. I’ll get going,” Taehyun started walking away with his duffle bag.
“Is he in his period or something?” Yeonjun muttered.
“Did you two fight?” Beomgyu curiously asks and get the towel and gently damp on Yeonjun’s skin.
“We didn’t but I know he’s mad at me because I ditched two days practice. He didn’t give me even one toss earlier,” Yeonjun whines as well and exhaled annoyingly.
“Two days? Was that… Hey! You should have practiced! You lied,” Beomgyu felt slightly irritated by how Yeonjun lied at him.
“I’m sorry,” Yeonjun tried to smile and hold both of the other’s hand. “I can handle Taehyun.”
“Tsk, liar,” Beomgyu pulled his hand and walked passed by him.
“You too, right?” Yeonjun speaks and Beomgyu pauses from walking. “We’re both liars in here, why act mad?”
Beomgyu smirks and smiles as he walk around, “Well, you aren’t wrong about that. I’ll forgive you this once,” he smirks and started walking ahead.
“Now there are two of them getting mad at me,” Yeonjun annoyingly runs his hair through his fingers.
After Beomgyu arrived at his room, he had a quick shower, cleans his room for a bit, and ordered some food. His phone sounded so he answers the call and he went out.
“Kai! Wow! I missed you so bad, punk!” Beomgyu exclaimed and hugs the new arrival.
The new guy, Hueningkai, chuckles, “I’m sorry, I’m late,” he apologized. “So this is your aunt’s apartment?” he asks as they walk inside and Beomgyu nods. “Don’t tell me you’re paying rent?”
“No of course,” Beomgyu laughs.
“As you should, this is your lot,” Hueningkai laughs and Beomgyu covers his mouth. “W-why? Why?” Hueningkai panicked as he removes Beomgyu’s hand on him. “No way… Y-you didn’t tell them— wow, this guy. You’re crazy.”
Beomgyu just laughs, “It’s summer. We should enjoy peace and calm,” he just stated and continue laughing.
They arrived at Beomgyu’s room and they started eating for dinner. Hueningkai started asking some questions with regards of Kairos and by the way Beomgyu describes Yeonjun, it piqued Kai’s interest to be the team’s manager.
“He has the spirit to win,” Hueningkai commented. “And I can sense more than that,” he added.
“What?” Beomgyu asks and drinks water.
“You like him,” Kai grins.
“Bingo!”
Hueningkai laughs, “This psycho didn’t even deny.”
After laughing and adding jokes with each other, knocks were heard on the door. Beomgyu take a stand and open it, Taehyun appeared followed by Yeonjun with their both usual T-shirt and shorts.
“Oh! Hueningkai!?” Taehyun’s eyes widen as soon as he saw the other who’s sitting on the dining.
“What!? Kai Kamal Huening!?” Yeonjun exclaimed as well and gasps in awe when reality sinks him in. “Hello! I’m Choi Yeonjun, the team captain of Kairos! It’s really an honor to meet you!” he quickly lend his hand as he move closer to Kai.
Beomgyu just laughs in fond by how the two players chaotically introduced the team and how he praises Kai’s ability to manage teams. “Thank you so much but I’m not a coach, I’m just a manager,” Kai laughs at them.
“Yes! But all the team you managed got into the semi-finals, finals, and even became champion!” Taehyun exclaimed with matching hand actions in small.
Kai laughs, “It’s because they’re great players,” he humbles. “I just manage things and organize.”
Beomgyu clears his throat that got the other’s attention. “Shouldn’t you be thankful to me instead?”
“Hey,” Yeonjun called him out. “How did you know him? You said you two are friends— you’re friends with Hueningkai!?”
“It’s just that we knew each other way back in college before he even became famous,” Beomgyu reasoned. “Just believe me, will you?”
Yeonjun stares at him for seconds and Beomgyu smiles. Clearly, Yeonjun won’t buy that reason but he just lets it as what the two had promised. “Thank you,” he said instead.
The three started planning about how Kai’s going to handle the team, promotes, and look for sponsors. But since it was just a summer tournament, Kai decided that Beomgyu will handle the sponsorship from jersey’s to food and services to training while Kai will hire a coach for them.
“They need a coach that will attract attention,” Beomgyu stated.
“Right,” Hueningkai agreed. “How about Coach Tan?” he suggested.
“C-coach Tan?” Taehyun repeated in surprise. “This is just a summer tournament, w-why bring such famous volleyball coach?”
“I searched something up and saw a name Coach Yamaguchi,” Beomgyu replied. “Should we call him?” he casually asks.
“Y-Yamaguchi— hey, you two. Coach Yamaguchi isn’t that necessary,” Yeonjun interfere. “He’s in Japan, no need to drag him here and their team just won silver from VNL.”
“Oh really? I’m sorry, I don’t really know about things,” Beomgyu just replied and sips on his beer.
“That’s why leave it to the manager, punk,” Yeonjun commented. “I’ll just pick the coach, I know someone,” he suggested.
“Then it’s settled,” Hueningkai stated.
They continued talking about stuffs and Beomgyu couldn’t help but to just listen to them talk and laughs along since he can’t understand any of it. So what he did is just staring at how Yeonjun happily talks about his ultimate sports.
And Hueningkai clearly noticed it from time to time. So he just smirks at it.
“Oh we’re out of beer. Should I buy some?” Taehyun asks.
“Let’s go, Taehyun,” Beomgyu agreed and both walks out of the room.
Hueningkai lift the can and gulps. “You aren’t really a friend of Beomgyu, right?”
Kai smirks, “I am,” he confirms. “We’re pretty close,” he added. “Why do you doubt him? Does he look that suspicious?”
“Not that way,” Yeonjun replied. “There’s just so much we don’t know about each other…”
“You’re right… That’s why, why Beomgyu?” Hueningkai seriously asks. “Why Choi Beomgyu of all people?”
“Why? Should I be scared?” Yeonjun casually replied and even smirked at it.
“I don’t know? You’re practically at the lion’s mouth the moment you touch him,” Kai stated and laughs.
“What a cute lion he is,” Yeonjun jokes and laughs.
“Not him.”
Yeonjun pause from about to drink and poke his inside cheek with the tip of his tongue. “You’re right… He isn’t the lion.”
“Anyway, just enjoy being with him. He’s leaving soon. He should enjoy his stay,” Hueningkai stated.
“And I’m doing it,” Yeonjun answered. “Tell that lion that Beomgyu’s enjoying my company a lot and I’m taking care of him. And even if one day he’ll leave this town, I won’t bother stopping him. Beomgyu isn’t mine to begin with anyway. We’re just both each other’s summer escape.”
