Summer 12
“And by that Choi Yeonjun ended the game with his service ace! Straight 3-0! Kairos advanced to finals!”
Everyone cheer inside the gym as the commentator announces Kairos’ victory. The team members hug each other in joy and Choi Beomgyu couldn’t help but to smile and capture such heartwarming event.
Two weeks after the summer tournament started, Kairos has been constant on their winning streak, it’s expected given they were the defending champion for two years now and they continue to aim
“Let’s get that gold!” Taehyun shouted and everyone cheered. “Coach Lance! Thank you so much for training us!”
“Thank you so much!”
“Let’s get that gold,” the middle-aged, Coach Lance stated in proud as Kairos bow at him.
“Congratulation Capt,” Beomgyu greeted Yeonjun.
“Thank you, boss,” Yeonjun chuckles and ruffles Beomgyu’s hair.
Beomgyu smiles at it, “I want to take you all out to celebrate but let’s do that after you win the gold, okay?”
“Yes boss! Thank you for your all-out always support,” Yeonjun smiles ear to ear.
Yeonjun and the coach as well as Hueningkai had a little meeting first while the team is cooling down. Beomgyu sees Taehyun doing stretches so he approached him. “You did well earlier,” Beomgyu complimented.
“Oh thanks,” Taehyun chuckles. “I always do my best to give the spikers the best toss,” he added.
“After you win the finals, have you planned what you’re going to do next?” Beomgyu asked.
“Hueningkai said we’re going for winter cup. It won’t be our first time joining the cup but the last time we did, we loss at the quarter finals that’s why we weren’t qualified for the national cup,” he explained. Though Beomgyu doesn’t really get that part, he just nods at it. “But we’re doing our best to win this time,” he added and stand up straight. “It’s my first time seeing our captain have this eagerness. We always dream of having a podium in world tournament and this time, it feels like it’ll really come true.”
Beomgyu smiles and starts and Yeonjun as well. “He knows what to do, it’s just that he doesn’t know how to start,” he stated.
“That’s why we’re so thankful that you came, Beomgyu,” Taehyun expressed that made Beomgyu look at him. “Thank you for pushing our captain to pursue his dreams again.”
Beomgyu just laugh at it, “I just sponsored you, guys. Stop making a fuss about it.”
When everyone finished what they are supposed to do, everyone went home to prepare for their final match tomorrow. It was after dinner when Beomgyu decided to enter Yeonjun’s room— yes, he knows the passcode.
“Oh, aren’t you supposed to be resting?” Yeonjun said as soon as he sees Beomgyu.
“Aren’t I supposed to say that?” Beomgyu asks back and hugs Yeonjun. “I missed you, that’s why.”
“We just saw each other earlier,” Yeonjun laughs. “Come on, let’s head to bed,” he invited and walks inside the room where they lay beside each other.
“I’m going to leave in a week,” Beomgyu said.
“Are you done preparing your things?” Yeonjun asks. “You should buy everything you want to buy,” he added.
“I already shipped out some of it but I want to take another one but I can’t,” Beomgyu replied.
“Wow,” Yeonjun reacted in surprise. “There’s something you can’t!?”
“Hey!” Beomgyu hit his arm and laughs. “It’s you. I wish I can take you,” he added.
“What if… instead of taking me with you, just be with me in here?” Yeonjun suggested.
“I can’t,” Beomgyu replied. “It’s better for me to leave,” he reasoned. “Why? Are you stopping me now?”
“Nope,” Yeonjun answered and hugs the other tighter. “I don’t care if you leave or not, it’s up to you. I told you, I won’t stop you,” he stated. “I’ll be fine once you leave.”
“I hope I can come back in a year but eyeing things right now, it might took me long enough than I expected,” Beomgyu stated and sighs. “I hope you’ll miss me.”
“Of course I will, punk,” Yeonjun scolded him and they laughs. “If only I could nail you in me.”
“You’ve been doing that though?”
“Hey!”
They both laugh at that thought. Their relationship being clear that they’re into each other in the whole summer and will end once Beomgyu left the province. Yet despite of that set up, both enjoyed things without pressuring each other, without stopping each other, and without care about what will happen next.
“I’m sorry to bring this up but can I know more about your ex?” Beomgyu asks.
“Choi Soobin?” Yeonjun asks, mentioning the name.
“So he’s Choi Soobin…” Beomgyu nods. “Yeah, may I know something about him?”
“Hmm,” Yeonjun hums and thinks. “What do you wanna know?”
“Anything that you’re comfortable to story will do,” Beomgyu replied.
“Okay,” Yeonjun affirms. “We meet during freshmen orientation up until then feelings developed. He’s a business major something while I’m at sports science. Though schedules are really a conflict, we managed to meet each other. It was on our third year, if I can remember it clearly when he confessed that he cheated.”
“Do you know who the other one was?”
Yeonjun shrugged his shoulder, “What’s the point of knowing? The moment he said that I just let him go and even if we’re seeing each other in the campus, I just tried my best not to give him any attention until I completely moved on from him,” he continued telling his story.
Beomgyu just nods as his reply. “Choi Soobin…” he mentioned and chuckles. “Truly uncanny…”
“Anyway, it’s been around five years already? I don’t know,” Yeonjun laughs. “Let’s just sleep! Kairos will win tomorrow!”
Beomgyu nods and watch Yeonjun fall asleep. He caresses his face and kisses his forehead. “I’m sorry, Yeonjun… I didn’t know anything about it…”
The next day, early in the morning the team is already practicing for the finals. They are against the team, Musika, whom they competing for two years now and their match are truly one of the most awaited every summer tournament.
Will Kairos still win for the third time?
Beomgyu observes Coach Luke as he gives them instruction and review their strategies about both defense and offense. Beomgyu is also confident enough that Kairos will win.
“Kai, did you do what I asked you to do?” Beomgyu checks.
“Yes boss, already done. You’re really assuring things, huh?” Hueningkai laughs.
“You know me. Assurance comes first. Assurance leads to victory,” Beomgyu just stated and remain seated in calm.
“Victorious, Kairos!”
The game started with the opponent’s serve, everyone is calculating each other’s movements. The ball perfectly received by Kairos’ libero, Taehyun runs to where the ball is as the other spikers get into positions. Taehyun motion his hands up on his face and glances where Yeonjun and the opposite hitter are then had a quick sight on the other side of the net if where are their blockers.
“Left,” he muttered and throws the toss at Yeonjun who jumped so high as if he’s flying and the ball stops right at his palm where he hit a perfect straight.
“Nice one!” Yeonjun exclaimed and the members tap his back and Taehyun just did thumbs up at him.
The referee whistled for the service of Kairos. Musika’s receive was off and it is an opportunity. “Free ball!” Taehyun shouted and let the libero touch the first ball. He once observes once again and sees that the middle blockers are eyeing on Yeonjun. But confident as he is, he faked a toss and dumped the ball right at the other side then he smirked.
“You cunny squirrel!” Yeonjun laughs at Taehyun and he hit his back. “Nice one, Taehyun!”
The rally continues the scores for first set is 18-23, clearly Kairos has the advantage because of their lead and that results to them winning the first set. After the break, everyone did their things. Beomgyu just assisted for water and towels while the major six is listening to Coach Luke’s advices and reminders.
Unfortunately, the second round was won by Musika. Although both teams are tied, that put to Kairo’s at edge. Normally, they can easily take over first two set. Luckily, because of Yeonjun’s undying motivation to others and strong connection to maintain the ball on the air, they won the third set.
“Last one,” Hueningkai mutters.
“They will win, don’t worry,” Beomgyu assures.
“I didn’t say anything,” Hueningkai laughs.
The whistle sounded for fourth set, everyone’s excited for the sudden turn of events. The scores are neck on neck. Musika earn points then Kairos will take it back resulting for deuce.
“Service ace by Choi Yeonjun! Score, 23-24 in favor of Kairos. Kairos match point!” the commentator stated and everyone cheered. “And a sudden time out for Musika!”
Kairos went back on bench and listen to Coach Liam one more time. They only need one last point to with the match. Everyone’s tired, everyone’s worn out.
Choi Beomgyu pauses from what he’s doing when he noticed how silent Yeonjun is. He never seen Yeonjun this serious in the whole tournament since it’s started. He’s concentrating so much. They are leading, does he still doubt that they will lose? Well, there’s so much uncertainty inside the court.
Usually, Yeonjun will nag at him, winks at him, flirt with him when he knows they’ll win but at that moment, Yeonjun is just staring at the net, not minding anyone. Suddenly, he shifted his eyes and meets Beomgyu. Beomgyu smiles and Yeonjun did as well before the whistle sounded.
Yeonjun holds the ball on the service line, constantly bouncing it on the floor until the 8-second service time started. He throws the ball high up, he runs and jumps then hit the ball. Musika receives it and despite being off, they managed to throw back the ball to Kairos.
Taehyun prepare to toss the ball for Yeonjun without any hesitation, going for a quick, and when Yeonjun hits it. Taehyun’s eyes widen when he just saw how the ball drops on the floor.
“Monster block by Musika! They stopped Yeonjun’s quick!”
“Fuck,” Yeonjun cursed.
“I’m sorry, that’s my fault,” Taehyun claimed.
“One more,” Yeonjun coldly reply and they prepare their defense.
The rally continues, Yeonjun hit the ball and Musika’s libero failed to receive it. The whole gym cheered. “Score 24-25 in favor of Kairos. Another match point!”
“Last one,” Yeonjun muttered.
Kairos served, Musika receives and attacks with their opposite spiker, Kairos’ libero was able to receive it but short causing their formation to mess up a bit. Taehyun don’t really mind as long as he’ll toss the ball perfectly and someone will hit enough to cut all the blocks.
“Captain!” Taehyun shouted with all of his might and toss the ball on the air.
Choi Yeonjun from the back row jumps, Musika’s blocks are up, Yeonjun swings his arm with full determination and hit the ball until it reaches the other side of the court but as soon as his feet landed, the whistle sounds.
“Outside!”
Beomgyu stands up, “Kai! Faster!” he commanded.
Hueningkai went to the referee, “Video challenge for block touch,” he said.
“We don’t have any camera—”
“We have. So let’s see the whole thing once again,” Hueningkai cut him off.
Before the match started, Beomgyu hired four sports videographer to cover the whole match as he know this small tournament won’t be that equipped to challenge this kind of accident.
Yeonjun was confused as well as the other team and even the whole crowd. Taehyun approaches his captain and said, “I knew it was weird to see videographers in here when I know they can’t afford to have one,” he chuckles. “So it was Beomgyu.”
The whistle sounded after verifying that there’s block touch by Musika’s middle blocker. “And that concludes our Summer tournament with back to back to back gold for Kairos!”
“Gather around! Victorious, Kairos!”
