Chapter Two
Turner Gazette. This was the place to which whom everyone who was anybody wanted to be. Jacqueline was once one of those people until she actually got the job. Stepping out of her dark-as-night Mercedes, Jacqueline made sure to grab her smoothie, satchel, and keys before locking her door after making sure her radio was off. The heat took a toll on her, but she beared with it. Today being Monday, she knew that business would be booming;new stories would come about, people would be walking everywhere to get work done, and papers would be everywhere. Yep, that's how work at the gazette was.
Making her way into the glass building with her stilettos on full display while clicking on the ground, she had a smile on her face. She was thinking of all the chaos that would be going on as soon as she stepped outside of the elevator. She pulled the door opened, seeing Denise, the receptionist, at the front desk. Denise was answering a call that needed her full attention. Jacqueline gave her a wave, mouthing, "Hi."
Denise did the same, but got back to her call just as fast. Jacqueline chuckled as she shook her head, continuing her journey to the elevator. Standing in front of it, she pressed the silver arrow that was pointed upward. It glew, indicating that it was about to open. As it did, she walked inside, pressing her body on the rail that was on the wall while watching it close. She slowly slid her hand that she had her keys in on the cold rail.
She breathed in through her nose, all the while closing her eyes. She turned her head up, and began to think while the elevator was moving onto the twenty-fifth floor. A long way it was, for sure.
Why am I so nervous? I'm just coming to work like always. Maybe this is a sign...but for what?
Her mind was running its own track. Her body was calm; it's just that her brain and her thoughts were messing up. It didn't make any sense to her. She had finally opened her eyes when the bell dinged. She breathed out through her mouth, surprising herself that she'd held her breath for that long.
When she walked out, everything was happening just as she had imagined. Everyone was walking any and everywhere, people had papers in their hand, and - surprisingly - there was coffee being passed around. Just a typical day at the Turner Gazette. Her brown eyes observed around as she made her way to her personalized office. She had sat her smoothie onto the desk, and placed her keys in her satchel when she placed it on the back of her chair. Just as she sat down in her chair to get started on her desktop, her flamboyant friend, Alice Gurret, came into the scene.
"Knock, knock," she said, walking into the attention-catching office. Jacqueline turned to her in her chair.
"Hi. Need anything?" She had just turned on the Windows desktop, so it would take some time to come on to the login screen. Alice had walked her sly behind inside as she smirked at her friend.
"It's not what I want; it's your boyfriend's wants." Jacqueline rolled her eyes and scoffed turning around to face the screen of her computer. She had out in her username and password, automatically going into her files. See, it wasn't the fact that Michael called her into his office, it was that Alice always called him her "boyfriend." Everyone in the office knew about Michael's never-ending crush for Jacqueline. When she had first arrived at his company, it was like love at first sight...for him, of course.
When they'd finally gotten to know each other, he started innocently asking her out. For an example, one or twice, he asked her out for coffee, then a few days later, it was lunch. She kindly denied both, but his love for her went on. She clicked onto one of the folders that Michael had sent her the day before, just to get her started on another article for the entertainment department. She looked back up at Alice.
"Look, he's not my boyfriend. I don't like him in that way," she sternly told her. Alice only quickly rolled her eyes, seeing that she'd made Jacqueline upset. "Now, what did he want?" she had asked.
"He said he wanted everyone of each department in the meeting room. When I came in here to tell you, you had ten minutes to get ready. You now have about five minutes before you have to actually be there," she said, raising a hand to scratch her neck. Jacqueline sighed.
"I'll go now, maybe I'll we'll be the first two in there," Jacqueline said, standing and moving from her chair.
"You mean you'll be the first one in there. Have you forgotten that my job is to write about the domestics?" Alice said as she walked out of Jacqueline's office.
Can't believe I actually forgot about her. The meeting is for every department. The departments being entertainment, sports, etcetera. And I was in entertainment.
It was just her luck. She really wasn't looking forward to a meeting. Following Alice's lead, she went and walked out of her office, going into the meeting room. Passing sharp corners wasn't really a challenge for her, but it did leave her short of breath. Finally spotting the door of the room, she sped to it, opening it to see Michael inside. And Michael only. She walked inside, closing the door behind her. Nervous wasn't a word in her vocabulary, because she never had gotten nervous around anyone.
Walking to one of the chairs, she sat in one, waiting for him to finally speak. He gave her a smile, and she smiled back at him. He then proceeded to go on and talk.
"You're quite early, I see," he commented on her. She only "hmmed" as a response to his remark, nodding her head. "You look beautiful, Jacqueline," he tried again. Then, she finally decided to answer.
"And you look handsome, Michael. But please, let's keep this professional, thank you," she said. He chuckled at her sassiness.
"This is as professional as I can get," he said, getting awfully close to her chair. Her ears were turning red;she could feel it.
Where in the hell is everyone?
And just like that, her prayers were answered. Soon, a swarm of people crowded the meeting room like rats. Jacqueline turned her head from the crowd, looking at Michael. She smirked, waving him away. He chuckled in defeat as he straightened out his tie. When everyone found their seats, the meeting began. Michael made his way up to the front.
He got everyone quiet first before he began. With his head raised high and confidence shocking him with every volt as it could, he began.
"As you all know I have called this meeting for each department today for a special reason." Everyone but Jacqueline knew that. His eyes darted to her as he saw her look of confusion.
Don't look so confused, dear. You'll know why soon enough, he thought.
He then continued with his announcement.
"For each department, I have a special place for you in my heart. For this being, I have decided on giving you all a paid vacation to New York this summer," he said.
To say people were stunned would be too much of an understatement. There were gasps, squeals, and a few claps. Jacqueline didn't know how to act herself, but she knew she was more than happy. Michael Turner giving them a vacation? And to top it all off, it was paid for? This felt too good to be true.
"Yes, my friends, you are going on vacation in two weeks for three weeks," he said. A smile danced on Jacqueline's face. She hated to admit, but this was the first time a man had actually made her blush in years. "If there are any further questions, please stay; if not, then you may go back to work." In his mind, he was hoping that no one would have a question, since he wanted Jacqueline all to himself for a couple of minutes, maybe five.
Luckily, no one had any more questions because they were so excited for their vacation. As Jacqueline was making her way out the door, Michael spotted her while a group of the last people were already leaving. She happened to be one of those people, but was in the back.
"Miss Williams, could you stay for a minute? I need a discussion with you for a quick moment." That made her stop as she softly sighed. She turned to face him as the door closed.
"Yes, Mister Turner?" She had went to a chair that was in front of where he was standing.
"I will be accompanying the office on the vacation," he said. He started to pace in front of her with her eyes following his every move. She noded and looked down. "Since we are going to New York, a certain someone will be headlining Times Square. Someone I know whom you like very much." Her eyebrows raised as she continued to listen to him go on.
"Michael, where are you going with this?"
"Since I planned this trip with hard thought, I knew..."
"You knew that someone would be there since they were supposedly headlining," she finished for him.
"Correct. Here's what I'm trying to ask you: rapper Drake will be performing in Time Square with other acts. I have two tickets, and I was wondering if you'd like to go with me a couple of days after we get there. I have VIP passes as well." Jacqueline's eyes nearly popped from their sockets when she finally registered his words. Drake...the Drizzy Drake would be in Times Square, and not only would she be able to see him perform which had been her dream of doing ever since she had heard his angelic voice, but she would be able to meet him afterwards.
"Yes, I'd love to," she told him. She was calm on the outside, but her insides were burning with excitement. He stopped moving in front of her.
"You're legitly serious? You're not rejecting me like normal?" he asked. She chuckled at him, nodding her head.
"Yes, but I'm only saying yes as a friend. Keep in mind that this is nothing close to a date," she warned.
"I understand that this isn't a date, Jacqueline. Just two friends enjoying music," he said as she smiled at his words. She stood while proceeding to walk to the door. "Hold on, Jacqueline," he called out. She turned on her stilettos to look back at him. "Mind staying for a drink?"
