Chapter 1
A prick and sharp pain and I'm awake. Breaking the darkness that's surrounds me, my eyes open and are filled with light. It's blinding at first my eyes yes gradually getting used to it. The feeling of my pupils contracting was apparent in my mind as all these other senses and information was coming into my system. Looking to were pain was coming from. Narrowing my eyes when seeing the source. A woman was holding my hand and had stabbed my finger. Maybe not stabbed but she had caused enough damage for a few drops of blood to come out of the tip. She seemed to notice that I was awake when she looked at me and her facial expression changed from serious to surprise and then to comforting as she started to speak.
"Sorry to wake you. Don't freak out. It's just a little blood. I need it for your DNA test. I also took your finger prints." She said with a smile.
She had marble colored skin. Unlike the woman from earlier. Her hair was brown and wrapped into a pony tail. She had a pair of black glasses standing on the bridge of her nose. She took a finger to push them up. Her eyes were a deep brown almost black. She was wearing a white coat with her sleeves rolled up. Seeing her sneakers once my head was tilted. She had a table with supplies on it next to me. She had a few papers with marks on them. A spongy looking semi-circle with what looked like teeth marks in it. While studying her she had completed her work with my blood and then bandaged up my finger. As she did this the officer from before walked in. He then faced her. He had a few pair of clothes folded up then rolled up in his hands.
"How long will it take for you to scan him through the data base? I need an estimate so we can do something with him during that time."
"Twenty four to forty-eight hours at most. It shouldn't be that long. Does he understand us? He woke up while I was drawing a bit of blood." She said to him.
The man named James looked to me carefully. He studied me and I studied him. We seemed to be mentally sizing each other up. This only lasted for a moment but time seemed to dry up as if the world was paused in that instant. I looked into his eyes again. This seemed to reassure me. It seems that we had somewhat of an understanding. A primitive language before there were verbal ones. Where you could view someones whole being and thoughts through their eyes. After our little moment he then turned back to answer the question.
"I think he understands us. He just can't communicate back yet. I will ask the chief can he stay with me. No offense but I don't want him here with you all night. He will either be bored to death as you type away on the computer or the more dangerous of the two you will let him play with sharp instruments. I don't really trust you with children Abby." He said the last part with a laugh.
"Eh they need to learn how to dissect bodies and collect samples. I'm teaching them valuable skills on how to figure out crimes. I'm not sure if Gale will let you hold him. She's very strict on policies however you can try your best. I suggest bringing him with you since you obvious don't trust me with him, plus maybe you can appeal to the tiny spec of humanity in Gale if she actually sees the kid." She said before getting up with a tray in one hand and patting the man with her other as she walked out.
James then turned and looked at me expectantly. He rubbed a hand through my hair causing it to fly everywhere and land in my face. He then placed the clothes in my lap. Staring at them for a moment before he cleared his throat. My attention was set back on him.
"Okay so you put these on and I will stand outside. When your done you can come out. Sorry we don't have any shoes on hand now. I will get you some later. You should be fine in socks though the floor is pretty clean. I will carry you though." He said as he walked slowly out closing the door behind him.
Looking around finally getting a chance to study my surroundings. First time I been alone. Just so tired in the car from running. The brown girl with the super long curly hair didn't help either with her quick explanation before suddenly disappearing into sparkles like some like some fairy from a magical movie. It bothered me that I could remember. At least I'm getting a small but steady stream of information as I go along. From some unknown source. So many unknowns. Taking a breath in and calm myself. The room was white and bright with light. There was a metallic table with wheels at the bottom next to my chair and the one in front of me, There were no windows only a door and a AC vent above me blowing cold air down that the blanket wasn't protecting me from.
Moving my legs to the side. Feeling my feet touch the cold ground. The heat moved from my foot and disappear and replaced with a feeling that made me suck in air and then slowly release it. As this coolness traveled up my spine. Placing my other foot on the ground the stood. Holding onto the chair to keep my balance. Still not being good with standing on my own to feet yet. The running earlier was more like a deer being born then rapidly being forced to run for its life as a hungry wolf chased after it. Not knowing how I knew what either of those animals were. Adrenaline was pushing me to move along with that small voice in my head telling me running is life and life is movement. Moving my hands and letting go of the chair. They were brown but not as brown as James. However I was considerably darker than Abby. Maybe a light brown. They had some slightly dark dots on them. Counting the ones on my left hand. There were 23 and there were 26 on my right. No one had these dots. Looking at the lines on my hands. They traced along the parts were my hands folded inward.
Gently returning my gaze to the clothes I have been given. They were nothing special or colorful like what I had seen others wear. However I guess they were mine. Picking up a black article of clothing. It was small and wouldn't cover much. It had three holes and the top of it as it seemed was stretchy. Guessing the two holes at the bottom were for my legs. Lifting my legs up putting a foot in each leg hole. Slowly pulling it up to my waist. They were soft and comfortable and fit nicely against my skin. Putting longer gray clothing on slipping and falling with a bump after getting my foot caught in the clothes and not pushing it completely through the stretchy hole at the bottom. Sitting on the floor I began pulling them to my waist as well and put on the shirt. Eagerly putting the socks on each of my feet. I felt my body gradually get warmer with these clothes on. That must be their purpose.
Pulling myself off the ground and moving to the door. Grasping forward to the knob of the door and gently turned it as the door popped open. Greeted by the smiling face of James the officer. Feeling hands move under my arms as I was lifted and put over his shoulders. I now had a clear rear view of the office. James started walking forward however I couldn't see where he was going. Seeing other people some more officers and some normal looking people writing or rushing around the place. I lost sight of all of this as James made a turn into a darker hall. Two knocks could be heard.
"Come in." A stern female voice spoke.
"Just be nice and you will be fine." James whispered to me as he opened the oak wood door and walked in.
