Chapter 16
Your head was craned back as you gazed listlessly at the ceiling above you- an act that you'd noticed yourself enacting the past few days. Nothing exciting really happened the day and night before, and you didn't know whether you should be encompassed by relief or dismay because of it.
Haru was uncharacteristically silent beside you, and it wouldn't even take an intellectual with an IQ above 200 to comprehend how the male was feeling at the current moment. Well, you couldn't technically blame him. He'd spilled out his feelings for he knew that you were fast asleep and wouldn't be waking up any moment sooner, and it wasn't exactly your fault (or so you believed) that you were curious as to what was going on inside the lad's mind. He was behaving so out of his character awhile back, so as a concerned friend and perhaps future lover, you just had to find out what was the instigator behind the way he had acted.
Your ears droned out every sound before you, and you had only bothered to take in your surroundings when the chief had announced something amidst the playing of the news featuring some random dude who you weren't really bothered to know more about.
"I have a regrettable announcement," the chief started. He glanced at the tv that flashed a myriad of colors as he continued with what he was declaring, "We need to go and protect this important person."
You raised a brow, so the man wasn't as insignificant as what you had once thought.
"Eh? This mission might be a bit too much for us," Kamei complained. You butted in, "Don't worry, the First Division guys will hog most of the tasks so there really isn't going to be that much for us to do." A guess which could most likely be deemed as a fact. Those people were too high-handed for them to not wish to monopolize any work just so they could be seen in a brighter light by the higher-ups, not that you were complaining or anything.
"What Ms. L/n said. Also, you don't need to worry. It's only for one day," the boss reassured his workers. "But working with those guys, ah, what a pain in the arse," you groaned in disgruntlement. Only one person there was tolerable and you hypothesized that he would most likely avoid you due to the incident yesterday.
"Yeah, I'm sure that we're appointed for this just to make up for the numbers," and you'd let a simper overtake you when you realized that Haru wasn't going full-blown ignoring you like you thought he would. He narrowed his eyes at your grin, yet that didn't serve as much of an intimidation due to his reddened ears.
"Shut up..." He muttered.
You just shrugged, the beam you displayed still not withering down, "I didn't even say anything."
The chief was ready to dismiss you all, and as Chosuke declared that he wanted to partake in the mission, the former readily shot him down.
"Ah, poor gramps," you mumbled before heading towards the couch where Daisuke was at. "You seem to be mulling about something, a penny for your thoughts?" you commented as you plopped down on the seat right next to them, shutting your lids as you allowed yourself to relax on the cushions. Daisuke was unspeaking for a moment, his blue hues remaining on your form for a moment as he recalled the events that had transpired the other day.
Suggestive as it was, he pondered if you'd already let it slip past your mind. "It's nothing," was his curt and simple reply. You hummed, and as he saw the way one side of your lips had tugged upwards, he readied and composed himself for whatever you were planning to say next.
"It doesn't seem like nothing to me. Tell me, will it be presumptuous of me to assume that I occupy half of your thoughts?" Amusement was in your tone and you were now facing him, your left hand close to his own one yet you made no move to intertwine your fingers with his despite the close proximity.
So you didn't forget.
"That would be correct," he answered candidly, causing your smirk to widen as beguilement flickered through your eyes.
You chuckled afterward, "What an honor it is for that to truly be the case." And this time, what stupefied you was how Daisuke took the initiative to link his fingers with yours. "My, how bold of you for having done so. I was hoping to be the one to take the first step."
Holding hands wasn't that big of a deal, but when it came to the seemingly aloof man, it did.
"You still could. I'd say that this was merely the catalyst for what's about to come," he replied, his thumb lightly brushing over your knuckles. Shame be damned, he had already reached his breaking point and he coveted to do nothing to restrain whatever it was that had caused him to feel such emotions for you.
You didn't miss the innuendo that laid dormant behind his statement, and it was something that caused a certain kind of sensation to stir within you. Excitement, if you might.
"Thank you for the clarification, I'll keep that in mind," was what you blithely responded with.
.
.
Five people were now standing upright in front of the establishment with the placard that had displayed 'Embassy of Polyadoll'.
You rested all of your weight on the wall behind you as your tongue swirled around the lollipop that you'd purchased out of boredom. At least a part of you had something to do whilst you anticipated for what might occur.
"Want some? It's the newly-launched chili-chocolate!" Mahoro offered both you and Haru the grub that she'd been munching on for the past few minutes. For the most part, the snack's name appeared as too sketchy for a human to consume, but ah, the woman was too adorable for you to deny what she was giving you.
"Don't mind if I do," you picked one before popping it into your mouth, grimacing at how it didn't match the flavor of the sweets that you had been eating yet you didn't let that show through your face. Seeing as you took one, Haru didn't question it any further and popped one into his mouth as well.
Not ready for the actual spiciness of the snack despite it being on the title (who could blame him for not taking the silly name too seriously?), Haku began to cough, with you lightly rubbing circles on his back as he did so.
Mahoro, the pink-ette, was now singing the advertisement song for the edibles, as if no one was hacking next to her. Cute, you'd give her that.
"You guys seem happy."
"Ah, Hoshino," and it made you feel powerful that with just one utter of his name, he was now crumbling into pieces before you. Mayhaps that was an attempt at hyperbole, but the male's cheeks were indeed insidiously being covered by splotches of red.
.
.
The night before
.
.
Your lips moved against his, your hands gripping his wrists as he stayed pinned on the wall. He had no grumblings, after all, this was something that he had dreamed to do with you for so long and it would've been achieved long ago if he'd actually managed to muster the courage that he needed while devoid of inebriation.
A string of saliva connected you two as you broke the kiss, panting from the lack of oxygen entering your lungs. This was getting too heated, and while you would like to take things up a notch...
He leaned in closer to you once more in an attempt to capture your lips with his for the second time, but you evaded him. "Why?" He had enquired in a soft tone with furrowed brows, the apples of his cheeks coated with a shade of red envied by tomatoes. "I may not be the most gallant person around, but I'm not the type to take advantage of someone who's too intoxicated."
You let go of one of his wrists before maneuvering to have his arm be situated on your shoulders as you led him to your couch in the living room. "I'll drive you to your apartment, come on. Don't fret, I won't leave you instantly. I'll make sure that you're set up for bed before leaving," and you scoured around for your car keys before subsequently hoisting him up for you to lead him to where your vehicle was parked.
"I... I may be drunk but I still know what I'm doing. And I knew that what I wanted to do was to continue..." He was gradually dozing off, and to a normal person, he would've been difficult to support because of him leaning his weight on you, but due to your extensive training beforehand, this was a task not too hard for you to accomplish.
You laughed lightly at his current and vulnerable state. It wasn't often you'd see him like this, so you'd love to savor the moment as much as you could before it utterly went away.
"Tell that to me once more when your mind is not hazy with alcohol. Maybe then..."
And his light snores filled your ears, signaling you that he was now ensnared by the grasps of sleep. You figured that since he had started to doze off, he hadn't caught your previous words, but he did...
.
.
He did, and now as he stared at you languidly leaning on the wall as you patted Inspector Haru on the back, he couldn't help but play on repeat what he'd heard from you before he was struck unconscious.
'Maybe then...'
Now wasn't the right time, but he was sober, wasn't he?
