Chapter 4: The Call
My first evening in the fishing village was somewhat supernatural. I had exchanged greetings with Tom before proceeding towards his home, which was the 5th tallest building in the whole village. The rivers were extraordinarily fresh and appealing. The 1st river, River Everline, was known for the deadly journey which some men embarked on. They found pure gold, which they believed was purer than any other gold known to man. However, greed filled these men's hearts, as one man betrayed the other. At last, the former inhabitants of the village found their corpses arranged in a complete circle, positioned in such a way as if someone did this. There laid the gold in the middle, which made the inhabitants conclude that the gold was cursed. The result; the gold was burnt and the river was cleansed.
The 2nd river, River Nagola, was just a common river to the people, nothing special about it. Any work related to water was done in this river; bathing, fetching water, fishing and the likes. The River Everline was the most mysterious river in the village. Unfortunately, word reached some men on the far side of Euston. Hearing the word gold, they saddled up, gathered as many men as possible, and armed themselves with weapons of war. They attacked the village by surprise, killing her men and women, slaughtering her children, and burning her to the ground. They searched in vain for the gold, only to later realise that it was gone, burnt by the people they exterminated. A heavy fight broke out among the men, which later became bloody. Those who survived went back home in shame and bruises.
Five years later, some poor families settled in the area, rebuilt the village, and named it Weston Village. They became famous throughout Euston by their excellent fishing skills which brought in great catches from both rivers. Tom's grandmother, Gwen Scotland, welcomed me greatly with a kiss on my cheek. She anticipated my arrival and was looking forward to a marriage between me and Tom.
Tom had earlier advised me not to stay outdoors during the night, but I was as stubborn as he was, although I didn't do it intentionally. That night, I couldn't sleep, couldn't return back to the Relics, couldn't return back to bed with Dogan. It troubled me, making me to leave the house in the middle of the night. I wondered off into the woods until I reached the River Everline. All the while, I was hearing a strange calling, so mysterious but so tempting. It made me remember the novel, The Call of the Wild. The calling was irresistible, and thus I entered the river. I continue the process, going deep into the waters. It covered my feet, then my legs, my waist, my shoulders, my neck, and finally my head. I disappeared into the mystic river.
I looked like someone hypnotized by the call. The waters didn't drowned me at all. The fishes minded their business and fled away from me as I walked aimlessly towards the call. I walked deeper into the river, not realising how deep I had gone. The green leaves of the village disappeared from the Moonlight view on the river. The fishes disappeared as if I was in the oceans, where its depths have little or no oxygen. Darkness blinded my vision, but the call was my magnitude and direction. The wet ground suddenly became strong as rocks, and light came from nowhere to lit a passage I was taking. The light shone brightly on the water as my head escaped from the water. As I came out of the water, my clothes, which were suppose to be wet, were actually dry and neat. My skin wasn't wet, neither was my hair nor my feet. The call was more stronger, beckoning me to come. Like a hypnotized victim, I proceeded towards a strange room, the belly of a mysterious cabin. In the middle was a rectangular coffin with stairs leading up to it, its lid removed and the water which filled the coffin to the brim. There was a firepit not too far away from it, with a flame burning fiercely on the wood. But there was someone singing a song, which was the call. It was so sweet, so irresistible, so magical to be resistant to it. It was a woman, the most beautiful of all I've ever seen, her face perfectly made so artistically that not even the most expensive make-up could match her face. She had the perfect Figure 8 and also the lovely eyes. Such a beauty would cause even the noblest of all men to forsake everything they had worked hard for, seeing her as something worth fighting for. Women did be jealous of her beauty, while men would make war against each other just to have her.
But I was no fool. She was a witch in sheep clothing, looking very innocent but in the inside she was a devil. She walked mischievously round me, touching me from my head to my breasts. I made no efforts to stop her, all because I was under her spell. She undressed me and ordered me to step into the coffin, and there I laid, naked with no form of shame. Then she howled like a wolf, her body twitched, her bones cracked and rejoined, and in her place stood a hideous witch, unclean from head to toe and had vicious claws. She growled as she stood behind my coffin. Then she mumbled some words to the goddess of witches to release the innocent princess. A light spirit came out from a lamp and entered into my body. The witch brought out a green potion, drank it, mumbled out some words before placing her horrible mouth on my lips, transferring the greenish substance into my body. She brought forth a special knife used for recreation and spoke these words:
" I am the Witch Golem, the strongest of all witches in the world. I represent Hadola, the goddess of witches. On this day, Nina Robinson is no more. By the powers vested in me, Sara Bliss is born!".
She held the knife high above her head and brought it down to strike my heart.
