twenty-two

- Chapter Twenty-Two -
"You two are so disgustingly in love."

On April 1st, 2019, the Earth was destroyed in a cataclysmic event. Billions of people were wiped out in a matter of minutes. Ironically, the seven survivors of the apocalypse were the very people who brought it on.

Energy thrummed from a dark, musty alleyway, creating a bright blue light from midair. Two women fell from the light, one of them wearing a black leather jacket and had curly hair, the other had strawberry-blonde locks and a fairly casual outfit, that consisted of sweats and a hoodie, what she had worn to break her boyfriend out of prison.

Both women groaned and turned from lying on their stomach to lying on their backs as they stared up at the blue light, which disappeared into thin air. The strawberry-blonde woman, Primrose turned her head to look at Allison, her eyes glancing down to the bandage plaster that covered her neck. Allison frowned slightly and pushed herself up, the bowling shoes they were both wearing clashed greatly with their outfits.

Thoroughly confused, the two of them walked down the street outside of the alleyway, looking for anyone and anything. Allison prodded Primrose on the shoulder and pointed to a restaurant. 'Stadtler's' it said. She nodded and the two of them pushed open the door to the restaurant, it looked like something straight of an old movie. A 60's movie to be exact. A bell rung with their arrival and every head turned to look at them, not so much Primrose, but Allison.

Primrose furrowed her eyebrows and looked around, the same as Allison before spotting a man pointing to a sign that read 'Whites only'. Allison couldn't exactly gasp with her bandaged throat, but that didn't stop the tears welling up in her eyes.

"You're sick." Prim spat at all of their disapproving stares and took Allison by the shoulder, guiding the both of them out of the restaurant, still confused as they strolled around the dark streets of...well, who knows where.

White heals clicked against the sidewalk as Primrose Armitage walked down the streets of 1963 Dallas two years later. Her cloaked pink swing dress bounced with every step she took, and her slicked back ponytail was swinging from side to side in the summer breeze. A small handbag was hanging from her shoulder as she tossed smiles to everyone she came across, wagging her fingers as a sign of greeting.

Here's the thing, two years ago, she was in a completely different timeline. She was in 2019, but then their whole world was threatened by an apocalypse and she had no choice but to time travel with her best friend, her boyfriend and their family. However the time travel went wrong and landed her and Allison Hargreeves in a dark alleyway in Texas, 1961 where racism and rights were set back decades.

It was horrible. She didn't know if any of the others were okay, alive even. Things just gradually got worse from there, she and Allison were chased down the street by some rowdy men who thought that harassing a woman would get them a good time, but they were wrong. The two sought refuge in a hairdressers shop where a group of women took them in and let them stay there until they got back on their feet.

Two years later and they finally had a house, well Allison and her husband, Ray Chestnut, had a house and Primrose was just living in it. It took a while for her bright exterior to come back as she was missing Klaus and she was missing Diego, but she just had to accept the inevitable, they weren't coming back. But that didn't mean she didn't have hope.

The woman had just been at another job interview. After two years, she had never ever gotten a job, most places don't allow people of a different race to go in there, which Primrose was highly against and she didn't want to work there if that was the case. Irritated would be the right word to describe her emotions whilst she turned a corner, her dress swishing around as well as her ponytail once more.

A kind, elderly woman grinned kindly as she passed and Primrose waved, taking her keys out of her handbag and walking up the path of the house and slipping the right one into the hole, unlocking the door and walking in whilst humming a small tune. She kicked the door closed and discarded her heels on the shoe rack.

Tea.

That was the only thing on her mind as she strutted her way over to the kitchen, her dress swishing behind her as she lit the stove and placed a kettle filled with water over the bright flames. Whilst the water was brewing, she bounced over to the cupboards and stood on her tiptoes to grab the teabags from the top shelf. She reached them eventually and wrapped her fingers around the box, pulling it down and grabbing one out of it.

Whistling echoed around the room and she returned to the teapot, turning off the flames whilst grabbing a mug and placing the teabag inside. The water poured smoothly into the mug, lifting the teabag up with it so it was now floating on the surface of the water.

She poured a little bit of milk in her cup and watched as the flurry of dairy mixed in with the coloured water, turning it a lighter colour.

The door clicked open again and Primrose turned her head, lifting the cup of tea up to her lips and tipping it back, savouring the burn.

"Did you see the paper today?" Raymond Chestnut, Allison's husband, came through the door. Primrose smiled softly at the excitement in his voice, she had not seen the paper today, but she was sure that he'd tell them.

"Page one," He read, coming into the living room. "paragraph five, line two: 'when asked about the Southern Justice Coordinating Committee's upcoming threat to demonstrate during President Kennedy's visit to Dallas, White House press secretary Pierre Salinger responded by saying-"

"What was that?" Allison called from upstairs as Ray entered the kitchen and smiled at Primrose as she took another gulp of her tea, smiling.

"We made the paper, baby!" He called up and Primrose laughed, coming to see the paper that Raymond had handed her. "Here's the best part, you're gonna love this." He looked over Prim's shoulder and read the last part. "And I quote, 'As the president said earlier this year-"

"The right of every man are diminished-" Two voices finished at the same time and both Primrose and Ray looked up to see Allison coming down the stairs in a yellow and white dress which matched the interior of their home perfectly.

"When the rights of one man - or woman - are threatened." She finished on the bottom step and chuckled as Ray took the paper off of Prim once more and pointed it at her. "I bought the last three copies this morning at Coleman's."

Ray threw the paper back down on the table, where Primrose grabbed it and started to read it herself since Ray had took it off of her before.

"I am the luckiest man in Dallas." He patted his heart and she glanced up at him and Allison, smiling softly. When Allison first met Ray, she still wasn't a talker, so when he offered to go out to dinner one night, Primrose rushed her out of the shop and promised that she would take care of everything.

She was so happy that she found someone she liked that wasn't her brother, because Prim was not a fan of her and Luther.

"Is that right?" Allison asked.

"That is right." He confirmed and Allison giggled as Primrose sipped on her tea. "And you are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen and the best part of my life."

The two swayed softly in the kitchen for a moment in silence before it was cut by Ray asking Allison what was wrong. Her face looked somber and let down, Primrose knew perfectly well why but Ray didn't and that made the two women upset most of the time.

"I just don't want you to get your hopes up." Allison told him, patting his chest. "About Kennedy."

"Change is comin', baby, I can feel it." Ray said sincerely and Primrose lifted the newspaper up higher in front of her face so they wouldn't see her heartbroken expression. Ray was over the moon about Kennedy, but they knew what was to come. "I can feel it." He said again.

"Speaking of which..." He went over to his bag that was sat on the table beside Primrose and picked out a square thing that was wrapped with a singular ribbon. "A little pre-anniversary gift for my beautiful wife."

Primrose lowered her paper as Allison took the ribbon off of the gift. It was a book that had a green and blue sort of cover, Allison looked at it with so much adoration as Ray started speaking.

"I know I promised you the stars, but..." He trailed off as she looked up at him.

"The moon." Allison chuckled softly down at the book and Primrose knew that she was thinking of Luther and about how he spent four years on the moon which he never missed a chance to tell anyone back when they were in 2019.

"I see you staring at it every night." Ray said and Prim looked at Allison with an eyebrow raised but the couple weren't paying attention to her as they continued. "So now you can see it whenever you want."

Allison pulled him in for a couple of long kisses and Primrose could only handle so much PDA, so she got up from her chair and went over to the two of them.

"Hey, hey, hey. What happened to no PDA in the kitchen?" She announced and they both laughed at her as she sipped from her teacup again. "You two are so disgustingly in love and I don't want to see it if I can't have it."

They knew she was joking, she often did which was something new about being in 1961, it was like her old happy self but with some new improvements.

"You'll find someone, Prim." Allison comforted, coming behind her and placing her hands on her shoulders. "The girl at the paper stand is pretty cute, huh?"

Primrose hesitated for a moment, looking back at the woman before she opened her mouth to speak, closed it again and then slowly opened it.

"She's...she's no Diego."

Allison took a sharp breath in and then sighed as Primrose stepped out of her hold, taking her hair out of her ponytail and running her hand through it to distract herself from what she had just brought up.

"Prim..."

"No, Allison." She sighed and made her way over to the sofa, plopping down on it. "You don't need to say anything. I know I'm never gonna see him again."

"It'll be okay. We've gone two years." The woman sat down next to her and rubbed her shoulder whilst Prim frowned. "You're gonna find a lovely man or woman and you're going to have a lovely life."

"But I liked him so much." She whispered and Allison frowned, putting an arm around her friend and hugging her into her side. "I can't believe we only got a day together. Not even that."

"He knew"

"I know." She groaned, running a hand over her face and in doing so, probably smudging her mascara but she had gone out all she needed to today so it didn't matter that much.

"Listen to me," Ray joined their conversation, crouching down in front of Primrose. Over the time of knowing the woman, he had picked up little information about this Diego person and some that didn't make sense, but he just assumed that he had heard wrong. "If this Diego doesn't come back then you don't need to worry. You're a beautiful woman with a lovely heart and sooner or later you'll find a lovely partner who will love you for that. You'll find love, I promise you."

"Maybe I don't want it without him." She whispered and Allison frowned again, brushing her strawberry-blonde hair out of her face and placing a kiss on her head.

"I know, sweetie. It's okay."
