- Chapter Thirty-Nine -
"Don't forget, Five, that he has special ties at the commission."

"Authorities are asking for help identifying several persons of interest at Dealey Plaza at the time of the assassination. The FBI believes they may have been acting in concert with the alleged shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald. Vanya Hargreeves, wanted in connection with the deaths of several FBI agents inside the federal building at Dealey Plaza. A Cuban exile known only as Diego..."

"Cuban?" Diego furrowed his eyebrows, looking around at his siblings and Primrose where they were all gathered on the Ground Floor of Elliot's place. All pairs of eyes were trained to the lit up TV that showed the news of that day, pictures of people they named popping up on screen and the said fugitives watching with dread.

Vanya and Luther were stood, Diego and Five were leaning against the stair banisters, Allison was higher up on the stairs and balancing herself on the banister whilst Primrose sat on the first couple of stairs; Klaus was the only one not with them, he had opted to stay upstairs whilst the others sat downstairs. After Kennedy's assassination, Primrose quite literally had to drag Diego off of the street and to Elliot's as quickly as she could despite the fact that he was heavy and she was very weak. They couldn't risk him getting recognised from his previous wanted posters and they got inside in little time, still upset and it wasn't long until everyone else gathered with them and the news began to play.

"...who recently escaped from the Holbrook Sanitarium. A bare-knuckle boxer with suspected Mafia ties who fights under the alias 'King Kong'" Primrose glanced over at Luther but held her amusement as the TV presenter continued. "Allison Chestnut, a Negro radical resposnible for instigating and organising the recent riots at Stadtler's lunch counter. Primrose Armitage, presumably in relation to successful father-son scientist duo, who has been seen with the previous suspects on multiple occasions and is also suspected for aggravated assault at Stadtler's lunch counter."

"Fair." She mumbled to herself as she remembered her run-in with Dave's homophobic uncle where she had punched him in the face and then stamped on his nose before walking out without a problem. Everyone glanced to her and she just glanced back, not bothering to explain herself.

"And finally, Klaus, the controversial cult leader and known tax evader." Primrose tilted her head at the odd picture they used that looked like some sort of drawing or painting of Klaus as some sort of holy figure. "The FBI is asking the public to be on the lookout for this unidentified boy, who they believe is being held hostage by the suspected terrorist network..."

"Well, it's true." Five shrugged his shoulders with an accepting nod and everyone looked  over at him, raising and furrowing their eyebrows at him. "I do feel like I'm being held hostage most days."

"God, I hate that photo." Diego muttered, presumably talking about the one it had showed when his name was mentioned which was a mugshot from a couple of months ago when he still had his short hair and his clothes from 2019. Primrose wasn't bothered about her photo, it was one that had been taken whilst she and Klaus were walking down the street and Klaus had just been cropped out of it.

"They're saying I instigated the riot?" Allison asked looking around at them all and Primrose shook her head with a frown at it all. "It's unbelievable."

"Who did you assault?" Five turned to look down at where Primrose was sat and the woman smiled slightly up at him as he raised a questioning eyebrow with his own small smirk of amusement at the thought of sweet, smiling Primrose being done for aggravated assault.

"A homophobic guy who made someone punch Klaus." She told him, shrugging her shoulders with another smile and Five nodded as he slowly turned his head away from her in praise.

"Look," Luther spoke up, sighing as he rubbed his forehead tiredly. "The good news is that we restored the timeline and we stopped doomsday, so-"

"Yeah, a bunch of real goddam heroes." Diego cut him off, grumbling as Primrose narrowed her eyes at him inquisitively. "We let Kennedy die."

"There was nothing we could've done, Diego." She shook her head, closing her eyes as she felt the waft of air of him turning around to talk to her but he didn't manage to get a word out before Allison had spoken instead.

"Yeah, and now we're officially the most wanted people in the world." Allison said, looking around at all of them as they glanced back at the aggressive tone in her voice and Primrose gave Klaus, who was lazily making his way down the stairs past Allison, a soft smile. "The FBI is after us, the Dallas police, the Secret Service. It's only a matter of time before they hunt us down here."

"Well, where are we supposed to go?" Vanya asked, looking around to Allison before looking at the rest of them to see if they had any suggestions.

"I have this yurt just outside Reykjavik." Klaus said as he walked past Primrose on the final steps, his hand patting the top of her head covered in pale purple hair as he passed and hit feet hit the main floor and Prim frowned as she noticed small stumbles in his steps. "We could totally lay low there. Folks there are weird, but lovely."

"Hey numbnuts." Five called out to him as Klaus stopped at the bottom of the staircase opposite to the one the rest of them were congregated on or around, Klaus paused mid-sentence and trailed off, looking over to Five. "Hiding isn't gonna make a difference here. The commission will hunt us down wherever and whenever we go."

"He's right. They'll never stop." Diego shook his head and as everyone accepted it and nodded with a frown, Five turned to face his brother and he looked almost...offended that Diego had spoken. Primrose remembered Diego and the little man flashing into the living room with explanations of coming from the commission which Primrose had little to no knowledge of.

"I'm sorry, since when are you an expert on the Commission?" Five crossed his arms as he stared at Diego, narrowing his eyes and Primrose looked in between them with a raised eyebrow.

"Since I got back from there." Diego told him nonchalantly.

"What?"

"Yeah, they headhunted me, offered me a job. Full time with benefits," Diego explained and Primrose cut him off with a bitter mumble of the word benefits as she shook her head and he hesitated for a moment as he turned to stare apologetically at her before continuing with his gaze set on the side of her face as she looked away. "Which I turned down and quite frankly the benefits weren't to my taste."

Primrose scoffed quietly and attempted to turn her head further away, she caught Allison's eyes and tried to smile at her and she attempted one back.

"They headhunted you..." Five repeated, disbelief with a hint of amusement clear on his youthful face as Diego looked back to him. "...the village idiot."

"Don't forget, Five, that he has special ties at the commission." Primrose brought up, smiling sweetly up at Five who chuckled and nodded his head, gesturing down at her on the steps as he spoke to Diego again.

"Oh, yeah, how could I forget that one?" He said and put his hand out, Primrose slapping hers down with it in a high five as they both stared at Diego and he glanced between them both with wide eyes; that was something he never expected to see...ever.

"What, am I not allowed to be headhunted?" He looked in between them both, narrowing his eyes at them and not liking how they were starting to gang up on him. "Only the almighty Five needs to be in demand?"

"Diego, you're not Commission material, all right?" Five told him as Allison took a seat next to Primrose on the stairs tiredly whilst they argued. "Got an obstinate nature to ya."

"Who do you think it was that figured out Vanya was that causes doomsday and stopped it? Me. That's who." Diego pointed at himself as Five began to walk away but went back to staring boredly at his brother when he was talking and Klaus yelled in protest once Diego said that he stopped doomsday. "I figured it all out on the Infinite Switchboard."

"You were on the Infinite Switchboard?" Five asked, his smug smile dropping at the released information. Primrose didn't have any idea of what this all meant but watched them argue right in front of her anyway.

"Hell yeah." Diego said in Five's face whilst the boy stared at him cluelessly. "I made that machine my bitch. Y'all need to recognise I got shit going on y'all don't even know about."

"Y'all?" Primrose furrowed her eyebrows, cupping a hand behind her ear and leaning forward slightly with her face contorted in confusion.

"I'm sorry, you've got things going on?" Allison burst out, staring accusingly at Diego.

"This isn't helpful." Luther rolled his eyes, walking past the two brothers with his hands stuffed in the pockets of his pants whilst Primrose took a strand of her hair to see if it had changed back, which it had. "It really isn't."

"Look, I met the Resistance in their secret lair." Diego explained, pointing around at them all but mainly talking to Five who was nodding along with a small, forced smile. "All right? I went through orientation and I passed and I stopped doomsday."

"You did not stop doomsday." Allison told him before pointing down at the woman sat on the lower stairs, blinking slowly and waiting for all the arguing to stop. "Prim stopped doomsday."

"Well..." She narrowed her eyes, tilting her head in thought as Klaus joined in and everyone began talking over each other. Truthfully, she didn't know what had happened in the federal building, she had felt a breeze next to her, assumed it was Ben before she collapsed and woke to Vanya calling her name. "I wouldn't know if I stopped doomsday-"

"She got in the room!" Allison was shouting over Diego, none of them able to hear as they argued and Luther tried to mediate. "You didn't even get to the door!"

"I got to the door." Diego argued back, pointing at her as Allison scoffed and shook her head whilst Klaus protested too and Prim pursed her lips at the blatant lie. The arguing progressed and soon enough they were on a completely different topic that had Primrose massaging her temples in exhaustion. "At least I wasn't busy playing with myself."

"Can you dispense with the dick-measuring for five minutes?" Allison asked from where she stayed sat on the floor and looked just as wearily up at all the boys as Primrose was.

"Unless you can literally, cause Ben and I-" Klaus began to say before Luther cut him off and Primrose looked over at her friends, anxious as to what he might have been about to say.

"We don't have time for this." He looked around at them all, sibling to sibling and then to Prim as he spoke, flailing his hands around to stress their situation. "The Feds could be here any minute."

"That's what I've been saying." Allison threw her hand up, shaking her head.

"I'm agreeing." Luther nodded and Primrose rolled her eyes.

"Okay, calm down, Hairy-" Five looked over at him, just as tired of this as Primrose except the woman didn't bother to say anything and get herself involved in an argument.

"Hey, it's King Kong." Luther corrected defensively and Five rolled his eyes before looking at Primrose with wide eyes and raised eyebrows whilst she smirked slightly, like that was any better. "And I'm sick of your ass, okay?"

"Yeah, okay, you win." Diego turned and held a hand up to Luther but the man continued.

"Guys, look, we need to move, okay?" He looked around, glancing in between Five and Primrose who seemed to be communicating with eye contact or smirking about something that made him annoyed. "That is more important here. That is our only option."

"No, we need to box those windows and stay here." Diego pointed to the ground as Five and Prim broke their silent conversation and turned back to the argument.

"I'm leaving." Every head turned towards Vanya who stood at the bottom of the other staircase where Klaus was previously stood before he had moved closer to the rest of them once the argument had ensued. Her face was deadly serious, her body language shifty like she was itching to run out; Primrose furrowed her eyebrows whilst Allison stood and questioned her sister.

"What? To go where?"

"Sissy's farm, somethings wrong with Harlan, and I need to help him." Vanya said and Prim pursed her lips, she remembered something about Sissy and Harlan when Vanya had briefly explained where she was staying and what had happened whilst she nannied at a farm.

"Vanya, we need to stick together, okay?" Luther said snappishly, turning to face her. "Now more than ever."

"That's why I'm telling you this." She stepped forward, looking Luther right in the eyes as the rest of them became alert and straightened their posture whether they were sat or standing. "Whatever's going on with Harlan, I think I might have caused it."

"How?" Luther asked softly.

"He drowned, and, uh, somehow I was able to bring him back to life. And now it's like we're connected." She explained, seeing everyone's furrowed eyebrows and confused expressions. "I don't know, I can't explain it but...I know that he needs my help. I need your help too. I'm scared and for the first time in my life, I don't want to do it alone. I want my family by my side."

She looked around, connecting eyes with Primrose as she watched with eyes full of sympathy for Vanya and this Harlan kid. "All of my family."

Prim smiled sweetly, nodding her head at Vanya who nodded back with a smaller smile than Prim's but her attention went to Diego when he stepped forward instead. "Look, I'm sorry. We have other priorities right now."

"Diego's right." Five called out and Primrose frowned as she looked between them. "For once. We need to make our stand here and now."

No one said anything else, everyone in silence as Vanya looked hopefully around at them all. Primrose stood up slowly, their eyes drawn to her movement as she walked up next to Vanya and stood by her side. Vanya tilted her head and looked up at her with a small smile as Primrose seized Vanya's hand in hers, standing up straight as the other siblings surveyed them.

"We'll see you when we see you." She said and set off towards the door, Vanya being pulled along by their grip. Diego said her name softly as she opened the door and stepped out towards the blue car but she didn't look back, just squared her shoulders and smiled slightly.

Vanya walked around the car angrily and slipped into the drivers seat as Prim got into the passengers seat. The smaller of the two stuck the keys in the ignition and revved the engine, Prim awkwardly looked over to her and went to speak but a door behind them opened before she could and Klaus clambered in before sticking his head in between their two seats.

"So, so, so..." He said as he got in, sighing as he looked over at Vanya once his head was in between them. "Ben, huh? Gone forever. Isn't he?"

Primrose furrowed her eyebrows and didn't ask any questions because she saw Vanya was about to say something, maybe it would explain. "He traded his life for mine...whilst he saved the world in the process."

"Pfft. Show-off." Klaus rolled his eyes and Primrose twisted around in her seat to stare out of the front window and tap her fingers on the dashboard as they had their small moment. "But did he...say anything about...me?"

"He wanted me to tell you that he was too scared to go to the light." Vanya said and Primrose smiled softly to herself. "It wasn't you that made him stay."

"Oh, that little shit-heel." Klaus chuckled before scoffing softly and smiling again. "All these years, and I thought that it was my fault that he didn't get his ticket to heaven." He looked away and laughed, sucking in a breath.

"Look, I'm sorry, but...you should get out cause I need to-"

"Oh no, I'm coming with." Klaus said and Primrose twisted around to face him, grinning slightly as she tilted her head at him and he glanced between them both with a grin just as bright. "I can't let you two face the unknown alone, right?"

Footsteps approached and the doors either side of Klaus opened up and Diego and Allison scooted in with a question of if they had room for two more. They settled in comfortably either side of Klaus who leaned back in his seat and Primrose smiled at them, her eyes settling on Diego's face as he just looked at her with that one look in his eyes and she flushed and looked away, trying to frown and rid of his eyes in her head.

"What about the Commission?" Vanya asked, looking at Diego who had been so adamant to wait.

"Well, might as well do some good before we die horribly." He shrugged and Prim sneaked a glance in the wing mirror on her side, him doing the same so they met eyes before she looked away and into the rear view mirror instead where she saw Five approaching Allisons door and opening it.

"Children ride in the back." He said to Klaus and the man rolled his eyes, climbing over the seats and putting his ass in Diego's face, who pushed him into the back whilst Allison scooted over to Klaus' previous seat and Five got in next to her. Primrose met eyes with Five in the rear-view and gave him a friendly wink as he smiled softly at her.

"Guys I don't know know what to say." Vanya twisted around in her seat to look back at all of them as they smiled back at her.

The back of the car opened and Primrose craned her head to try and see what Klaus was doing but was instead met with the sight of Luther crawling into the back and joining Klaus as his weight weighed the car down with a creak and everyone jolted as the car was tipped downwards and Luther managed to reach back and pull the door shut so he was now not-so-comfortably in the back with Klaus.

"Anyone makes a fat joke and I'm outta here."
