thirty
- Chapter Thirty -
"You are unbelievable."
"Has anyone here done anything to screw up the timeline?"
Vanya's question could be met with a variety of different answers and practically everyone in the room knew it, all of them awkwardly turning away or scratching their necks. Primrose sent a look to Klaus, his cult an obvious answer or Allison, her sit-in was also an obvious answer. Not to say that she shouldn't have done it because it was good to stand up for her rights but that could be a very influential part of history now.
"Let me be the first to say..." Primrose started, breaking the silence before all hell broke loose in their little room. "I have been spending all my time at job interviews and watching Calamity Jane so no, I have not." She finished, nodding her head and sitting back in her seat.
Silence ensued them all for a moment again, Prim glancing around at all of the siblings inquisitively. All of them looked guilty, anxious or unsure; Allison was pouring herself another drink and avoiding eye contact, Klaus was shaking his head firmly with the obvious aura of someone lying, Diego had his arms crossed and glanced at the floor for a second, Luther had his chin in his hand and Vanya was looking around at them all like Primrose was.
Luther took his hand away from his mouth for a moment and opened his mouth as if to say something, everyone looked over at him questionably and he turned to look at Diego before pointing a finger at him.
"Diego's been stalking Lee Harvey Oswald."
"You've been what?" Prim turned her head back around to Diego but he just pointed back at Luther in retaliation with another exclamation.
"And you're working for Jack Ruby!" He said to Luther, Primrose furrowed her eyebrows shockingly, Jack Ruby was the very man who shot Lee Harvey Oswald after he had been charged for the murder of JFK. He was a notorious nightclub owner and probably an extremely rude guy, also due to die of cancer in 1967 whilst in prison. History class had taught Prim well for this type of stuff.
"You're what?" Primrose whirled around to face Luther instead who looked away from the rest of his siblings, almost ashamed and he had a good right to be.
"Allison has been very involved with local politics." Klaus spoke up drowsily, giggling slightly before taking a sip of his drink he had made.
"Okay, you started a cult." Allison retaliated, pointing his drink at him with a sarcastic smile towards him. Klaus began to make a claw with his hand and scratch the air in Allison's direction whilst hissing and growling.
Primrose laughed quietly and picked up a glass of water from the table next to her, drinking it as Klaus growled at Allison.
"I'm...I'm just a...nanny on a farm." Vanya spoke up, looking around at everyone with an incredulous laugh. "I don't have anything to do with all that." She said.
"Well, maybe you do, we just don't know it yet." Allison shrugged her shoulders slightly, Primrose nodded comfortingly with a small smile. Vanya had let them all know that she apparently had lost all of her memory and didn't know what had happened back in 2019 and was actually very confused when Luther and Five both approached her.
A sharp whistle cut through the air and any muttering or talking wet silent. Primrose an extra weight on the chair she was sat it and looked up to see Diego with his hands on the back of it, balancing himself.
"Listen to yourselves," He said to them all and glanced around, meeting eyes once more with Primrose below him for a moment (she had twisted around in her chair to face him). "Everything in our new lives is connected to Kennedy. That can't be a coincidence. Luther's working for Ruby, Allison's protesting the government, Dad is on the grassy knoll, Klaus is..."
Klaus flipped his hair slightly and was staring over at the wall, a little bit distracted.
"...doing something weird and pervy but probably related." Diego continued, furrowing his eyebrows at his brother's actions slightly before turning back to the rest of them. "Prim is still as sugar sweet as ever and spends her time watching old movies which makes it obvious that she has very little involvement in this-"
"We get it, you're in love." Luther mumbled with a slight roll of his eyes, Diego glanced to him sharply with a scowl but turned back and carried on with a louder voice as Primrose went slightly red.
"See, clearly," Diego practically yelled over Luther before quieting down when the man had stopped talking. "We were all sent back here for one special reason: saving John Fitzgerald Kennedy."
"Come on, Diego-"
"That is not-"
"To hell with Kennedy-"
Everyone's arguments overlapped each other as they looked at Diego who stood there impassively at all the words fired at him. Primrose sunk back in her chair slightly, she had no opinion on the matter. It could be for Kennedy, it's a possibility, but it could also be something different. Five was the genius so she supposed she would just wait for what he said.
Through all the arguments, Diego looked down at Primrose who looked back up at him when she felt his eyes on her. He raised his eyebrows a small question on 'You think I'm right, right?', she nodded slowly with a small shrug, smiling in a way that said 'It doesn't matter if you're right or not, I'm with you anyway.' and content with their silent conversation, they turned back to the other arguing siblings.
"This is bigger than all of us!" Diego finally retaliated against all the arguments but the person that really broke it was Five with a grave statement that quieted all of the adults in the room.
"Guys, you all die." He said, looking around at the all as it went silent once more. "Even Prim. I was there, I saw it. And I wanna forget it, but I can't. I saw Russian nukes vaporize the world with all of you in it...in a war that never would've happened if I hadn't brought you here and I saw Prim try and make a shield but the nuke was too strong for her to hold back."
Primrose felt a hand on her shoulder, rubbing it slightly and lifted her own hand to ghost over Diego's fingers slightly before she let her hand drop down to her lap again and leave his hand there.
"And Hazel gave his life to save us," Five continued, Primrose frowning at the mention of the man's death. He was the one who gave up the guns after he thought the apocalypse was over, he must've somehow gotten away from it though which Primrose didn't see possible. "So you may need to shut up and just listen to me, I don't know if the things we've experienced here are all connected."
He looked at Allison and Vanya, the two stories the hardest to connect together. A civil rights activist and a nanny on a farm.
"I don't know if there's a reason for everything." He looked over at Diego who nodded only very slightly and ran his thumb over Primrose's shoulder slightly. "But Dad will. We need to talk to him before everyone and everything we know is dead."
"Okay, I'm out." Luther sighed, getting up from his chair and beginning to walk to the stairs, Primrose widened her eyes and faced him incredulously with her mouth agape in what might've been disgust at his actions.
"Did you even hear me, Luther?" Five seethed and the man stopped beside the chair that Primrose was in and Diego was stood behind.
"Yeah. Yeah, I did." Luther nodded. "I heard a 58 year-old man who still wants his daddy to come fix everything. Well, you can count me out. It's time we all grew the hell up."
"You are unbelievable." Primrose scoffed, not even bothered to try and quiet it down at all. It went silent again, everyone exchanging glances as Luther stopped himself from walking away and turned to face the woman in the chair with a slight narrow in his eyes.
"What do you mean?"
"Oh, just that you've been a daddy's boy all your life, right?" She began, getting out of the chair and turning to face him, looking up at him dangerously and Luther became reminded of the slap he had received the last time he had seen her. "You always believed that what your dad said was right, he could do no wrong and only did what was best for you. Daddy named you his number one so that's the only thing you can ever be. Now that we actually need him, you've abandoned that and quite frankly, I cannot understand why. Why the sudden change?"
"Who are you to criticise that, Primrose Armitage?" Luther asked her and then cupped his ear with a fake look of discovery. "Oh, you hear that? Armitage, I believe. Not Hargreeves."
Then he stalked off, leaving Primrose dumbstruck, it seemed that he was still on that argument of her not being involved in any discussions with the family. Everyone shouted after him and Diego followed him to the stairs, Five also following as Primrose stood staring at where Luther had once been. She furrowed her eyebrows in slight guilt, maybe she had gone too far. She definitely had, who was she to talk to him like that?
Her frustration towards Luther had obviously not diminished but it certainly wasn't her place to talk to him like that, although she was a bit pissed off about it. She couldn't deny that but she was disappointed in herself for snapping at him like she had, especially in front of everyone. Her top row of teeth bit down on her bottom lip slightly and she looked around at the sound of the door shutting.
"Rosie?" Klaus called out to her and she looked over at him as he held up a drink in her direction. "You wanna go for tacos?"
"No, sorry Klaus, I just have something to do really quickly." She apologised, walking over to pat his shoulder before making her own way to the staircase and descending down it with the clicking of her heels following her.
Five, Luther and Diego were all gone so she supposed they had taken their argument outside. With that in mind, she made her way out of the building and looked around, seeing Diego and Luther out on the sidewalk in the midst of a small talk. She breathed out in relief that they had not done and started to walk up to them, turning into a small jog where her hair was blowing behind her in the wind but also so that she didn't trip over whilst running in heels.
"For Gods sake." She heard Luther say as she approached them and tried not to show her discontentment of his words as she stopped with a couple of deep breaths.
"I'm sorry." She apologised to him immediately and he looked down at her with a little bit of shock, opening his mouth to say something but she interrupted him. "I had absolutely no right to talk to you that way, especially about something that meant a lot to you like your father and I actually feel really bad about it so I'm really sorry."
She was breathing heavily from both her run and her ramble as she smiled at the large man apologetically.
"I'm sorry, too." He admitted in a small mumble, glancing to Diego who had moved to stand in the middle of them but a bit away so they could face each other still. "I shouldn't have excluded you from the discussions again, that was my bad."
"I'm also...sorry about slapping you the other day." She admitted begrudgingly and Luther nodded slowly with an awkward smile.
"Now, shake hands." Diego gestured and both looked over to him with similar looks on their faces but he just grinned slightly and grabbed both of their hands, forcing them to handshake. He took his hands away as they shook it a couple of times before pulling away with awkward smiles. "Awesome. Anyway, this is to the both of you by the way, we don't have to worry because we're on the right path."
"Oh, yeah? How do you know?" Luther asked him and Primrose looked at him curiously as well. Did he have actual evidence or was he just doing that thing where he's all cocky but it's actually quite attractive?
"There's a long, black car that's been following us since we left Elliot's." He mumbled to them and both adults glanced to each other in slight alarm. "Six o'clock."
The two of them turned around to see the black car slowly roll up beside them on the pavement and park, a very very elderly man in the drivers seat. Primrose edged slightly closer to Diego as it halted, the three adults moved closer to the car to maybe question the man but he started to get out of the car before they could say anything. They moved backwards as the car opened and nearly hit them in the face.
"Diego!" Primrose snapped quietly when she glanced back at him and saw he had a knife in his hand. He raised his hands in quiet defence before glancing at the man who had gotten out of the car and he took a step forward, Primrose turning her head back to the elderly man who was holding out an envelope and shoving it towards Diego.
He took it off of the man and then the three of them continued to watch oddly as the man climbed back in his vehicle and drove off without a word.
"To my pursuers: I..." Diego took a pause, he had taken the letter out of the envelope and began reading it out. "Reginald Hargreaves..."
"What?" Prim and Luther asked at the same time, both making their way behind Diego's shoulders and reading over them whilst he continued to read aloud.
"...request the pleasure of your company for a light supper on the 20th November, 1963, half past seven o'clock, 1624 Magnolia Street." He finished and looked up at the two, Primrose furrowed her eyebrows down at the letter.
"Southland Life?" She asked, wondering why the infamous Reginald Hargreeves who Primrose was apparently going to be meeting now, would want to meet them at Southland Life.
"A 'light' supper?" Luther asked, Diego looking in between the two with slightly furrowed eyebrows.
