Chapter 5: Late Night Rendezvous
It was about 3:49 AM when Changbin woke up to the sound of laptop keys being harshly tapped. Rubbing his eyes, he turned over on the bed to see that Miyeon's side was vacant. He sighed.
"Miyeon? Baby, where are you?"
No response.
Changbin then lazily left his bed, slipping his feet into his slippers and following the sound of the keys. Then he saw her back facing him in the living room, and soft whimpers left her mouth as she abruptly pressed the keys.
"Hey, are you oka-" he walked over to her and saw her crying as she typed, "Miyeon, what happened?!"
"I'm not..." she sobbed, eyes never leaving the bright laptop screen in the dark room, illuminated by a single lamp, "...Able to write well."
"Hey, hey," Changbin sat down next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her close to his chest, "Don't fret over it, okay? It's just a creative block, it'll be over soon. You gotta pull through it."
"B-But I've heard that these blocks can last for a lifetime," Miyeon finally turned to look at him, her eyes watery and her lips turned down into a frown, "What if I'm never able to write?"
"That won't happen, it's literally the worst-case scenario," Changbin spoke gently, "Trust me! If you try to write with a calmer mind and don't worry about the end result, this block will be over very soon. And I know you can do it, because you're just as good!"
Miyeon wiped off her tears, and spoke in a small voice, "Really?"
She is just like a child; an adorable one at that -- Changbin thought, smiling, "Of course, baby. Now let me make you some coffee. And, hey, it's chilly outside. Why are you in a thin t-shirt?"
"I didn't get time to change..." she pouted and spoke, eyes drooping.
"It's okay, I'll fix it," he spoke, instantly rushing to make her some coffee. Five minutes later, he arrived with a mug of coffee and a blanket. Giving her the beverage and earning a little 'thank you' from her, he sat next to her and draped the blanket over both of their shoulders.
"You're gonna sit beside me?" Miyeon questioned, bewildered, as he rested his head against her shoulder and yawned, staring at her screen but reading no words.
"Yes. Always."
---
"Yes! Always!"
"Don't you go all Harry Potter on me!" Lily sneered, "You cannot say that you always give me the last bite!"
"But I'm older than you!"
"By 5 minutes!"
The twins glared at each other before whining in unison, "MOOOOOOOOOM!"
In their shared room, Chan and Aisha woke up with a start, only to realize that it was about to strike 4 in the morning. Another round of the twins calling for Aisha sounded, and she groaned, "And I was on sleeping pills! Seriously, these two are stronger than my meds."
"You rest, I'll check," Chan groggily spoke, blinking to clearly see his surroundings. He walked over to the kitchen to see the twins fighting over the last bar of chocolate.
"Kiddos, what's going on here?" he crouched down to their level and questioned.
"Dad's got curly hair!" Lily squealed, waddling over to him to mess with his bed hair. Chan giggled and let her mess it up; she was his precious little girl and he wasn't planning on restricting her on anything... until she makes a boyfriend. Then he's gonna judge the shit out of that guy to see if he fits for her.
"Dad! You always favor Lily!" Ryan sulked.
"And mom always favors you!" Lily stuck her tongue out at him.
"No, no!" Chan spoke, "No one favors anyone in this house! We are a family, and we are all equal, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah," Lily sassed, rolling her eyes, "But the last chocolate is mine!"
"Stay away, loser! It's mine!" Ryan protested, and she turned to look at Chan with tears in her eyes... before ending up bawling, "DAD! HE CALLED ME A LOSER!"
Chan sternly looked at his son, "Ryan."
He looked at the ground, and Lily went to hide behind Chan's leg as soon as he stood up.
"Sorry, dad," Ryan spoke, and Lily, standing behind Chan's leg, wiped her tears off and made funny faces at her twin. It ended up with Ryan breaking out in a giggle, and Chan getting all confused, "What's so funny...?"
"Lily!"
"Ryan!"
Before the twins could go bickering again, Chan took the bar of chocolate and broke it into two pieces, offering them the pieces, "We have to share, alright?"
"Wait!" Ryan said, and then ran off to his and Lily's shared room. A minute later, he came back with a scale. Lily rightfully agreed with him as he grabbed both the pieces and measured them on a scale.
"Wow, dad! It's equal!" Lily's eyes shone.
"Um, good!" Chan was absolutely speechless. What went on with these two?
As the twins ate their chocolate, Chan ushered them into their room. As he tucked them in their bed, Ryan asked, "Dad?"
"Yes, Ryan?"
"Why was mom screaming 'daddy' last night? You were with her, right? Was she talking to grandpa?"
"...Goodnight, kids."
