"Be.. why do you look like a unicorn threw up all over you?"

Sabine giggles as she glances down at her outfit, eventually looking back up at Brittany. "Because the state fair always makes me want to dress up and get in a glittery mood. Don't I look pretty?"

"Yeah," Brittany nods before she takes another sip from her soda, her tone monotone. But Sabine pretty much knew she had gotten her friend's seal of approval.

Sabine and her best friends were at the state fair with the rest of their school, celebrating their final days of freedom before they'd have to go back to high school. But really, the fair was one giant excuse to celebrate their school's football team. The attention was centered on them and currently, Sabine's other friend, Isabel, happened to be kissing and hugging Jeff, the captain of the football team.

Now Sabine tried to be a relatively positive person and she tried even harder to see the good in everyone. But Sabine Blossom was convinced that there was nothing good about Jeff.

"Ugh, I am never ending up like that," Brittany declared.

Sabine furrows her brows before she follows her gaze, realizing that she was looking directly at Isabel and Jeff. "Like what? In love?"

"I'd hardly call that love but yeah, I guess. I'm working on becoming a millionaire," Brittany stated, flipping her hair over her shoulder.

"I dunno. I wouldn't mind being in love after all. I think it'd be kind of nice actually," Sabine admitted with a shrug, causing Brittany to give her a disgusted look.

Just then, Isabel skips over to them after Jeff had basically ignored her (he truly did have the attention span of a goldfish) - looking like a princess with her curly dark hair flowing with her. Everything she did, she managed to be so graceful. And she was drop dead gorgeous - far too gorgeous to be with a man baby like Jeff. But Isabel saw something in Jeff that others didn't, even despite his immature ways and his habit for cheating on Isabel with countless girls.

"Hey! I didn't take too long, did I?" Isabel replied, linking arms with Sabine.

"No, you're right on time. I wanna go on one of the rides," Sabine replied as the trio now walked straight ahead, strutting around the fair with eyes on them. Seeing as they were popular cheerleaders, that was fairly common.

"Good idea. We can go on the Puke and Duke," Brittany suggested.

"Sure!" Sabine agrees with a smile, only to falter when she remembered the name. "Wait, but won't that make us puke?"

"Duh. That's the whole point," Brittany reasoned.

"But I can't puke! This shirt is new," Sabine pouts.

"That's a pretty shirt, by the way, Bee," Isabel complimented.

"Thank you," Sabine responds with a smile.

"Okay, fine, you don't have to go on the Puke and Duke with us... you big baby," Brittany relents with a sigh, lightly nudging the shorter brunette beside her.

"Whew! I could just be there to, like, cheer you on and give you encouragement," Sabine offered.

"That's very sweet of you," Isabel responds with a smile.

Just then, Sabine happened to notice three girls shuffling around and appearing nervous. One of them happened to be short with a ponytail, seemingly the more aggressive one out of the two. The next girl had dark skin and an afro, bickering back and forth with the first girl. And then the last one awkwardly stood to the side, looking absolutely lost.

They seemed vaguely familiar to her but she couldn't remember any of them for the life of her.

"Who are they?" Sabine nods her head in the direction of the crowd.

"I think they go to school with us," Isabel shrugged.

"Huh," Sabine frowned, still struggling to remember them.

Once they got closer to them, Sabine was focused on the awkward one. She was a lot cuter up close and Sabine felt her heart skip a beat when she coincidentally turned around to look at her. They locked eyes for just a moment before Sabine looked away, a giddy little smile now threatening to break out on her lips.

"Hey, Brittany," the first girl greeted, practically jumping in front of them in an effort to get their attention.

                                                                                     "PJ," is all Brittany stated.

Sabine giggles. "You're named after pyjamas."

"Yeah, pretty crazy, huh?" PJ awkwardly laughed before motioning to Brittany and her clothes. "I am loving all the... holes in your pants."

"Thanks. You look like a little Dutch boy," Brittany responded.

"Thank you," PJ responded, seemingly glad to take any bit of attention Brittany gave her.

"And the Dutch are, like, super cool. They invented the pretzel and I love pretzels," Sabine added.

"They did?" the cute but awkward one asked, brows furrowed in genuine confusion.

"That happened to be the Germans actually," PJ's other friend corrected her with a sheepish smile.

"Oh! Aren't they the same thing?" Sabine pouted.

                                                                                     "No...?" she trails off.

"So, Britt... Can I call you Britt?" PJ kept on going.

"I'd prefer if you just called me my name," Brittany quickly shuts her down with a shake of her head.

                                                                                      "Britt-a-nay!"

                                                                                      "No, not that."

Sabine often had her head in the clouds and she wasn't always too aware of things. But she could tell that things were getting awkward... awkward enough for her to actually consider going on the Puke and Duke just to escape it all.

"Brittany. Are you thinking of riding the ferris wheel at all tonight?" PJ asked, hoping to steer the conversation in a more fun direction.

"I wasn't. I'm going on the Puke and Duke. I need to pull trig," Brittany stated with a tight-lipped smile, sloshing the ice around in her cup.

"I'm gonna say something crazy. I think you could eat food. Digest it, let it marinate, poop it out," PJ offered.

"Mm, gross," Brittany and Sabine both said at the same time.

PJ then held up the cotton candy, offering, "Maybe this? You want a bite of this?"

Brittany shook her head and PJ tossed it over to the side, making Sabine's shoulders slump.

"I wanted some," Sabine weakly responded.

"Yeah, it's fucking disgusting. You want a hotdog? We could go get a hotdog?" PJ offered next.

"I don't know...," Brittany trails off with a short laugh.

"Yeah, we could get the bun."

                                                                                 "No bun."

                                                                                 "You gotta get the bun."

                                                                                 "No."

Brittany's once lightly playful demeanor was gone and she was frowning, letting it be known that she wasn't playing around. Brittany would sooner die before letting another carb go into her body.

"No bun," PJ relents, a shaky laugh leaving her lips. It was growing painfully obvious that she had given up trying to impress Brittany for today.

"I like buns. Well, I like bread in general," Sabine chimed in, hoping to try and cut through the awkward tension.

"Yeah, bread's pretty cool," the girl beside PJ replied, making Sabine smile. It was bad enough that she was cute but she liked bread too? Sabine liked her more and more.

"And the best part is that there's so many things you can make with bread. It's the best invention ever," Sabine gushed, quickly growing excited when it came to talking about one of her favorite interests.

"Okay, Isabel, Josie was just saying something similar to me," PJ interjected, wanting to end the sudden, random discussion about bread.

"I don't think so," Josie denies, shrinking underneath all of the sudden attention on her.

"I think so. It was really good. It was super funny," PJ insisted, giving Josie the floor to speak.

"You're just so  - you're skinny too, as well. I'm Josie, by the way," she spoke, tipping the imaginary hat on her head with an awkward charm. "Good evening."

Sabine chuckles softly, amused by the scene.

"Yeah, you're real - you're a real skinny minnie, aren't you? You should probably eat. Probably gonna send you to the hospital with how skinny you are. Uh-oh, call the doctor. Skinny girl, I see," Josie rambled on.

Sabine quickly stopped laughing, sharing the same look of shock and confusion with Isabel. How had this gone from a discussion about hot dog buns to people's weight?

"Okay! Do you guys want any of our tickets?" PJ stepped in, holding up the tickets she had been holding onto.

"Yeah, thank you," Brittany responded, snatching the tickets from PJ before she walked off, Isabel and Sabine walking right beside her.

"What the hell was that about?" Isabel questioned.

"I dunno. But the quiet one was kind of cute," Sabine answered with a shrug.

"Sure... if you're into nerds," Brittany snorted.

Keeping true to her word, Sabine stuck around and cheered Brittany on as she went on the Puke and Duke ride. But soon enough, Sabine split up from the other girl to go on much tamer rides and play a couple games. However, Sabine felt hungry so she'd find herself in line for cotton candy. There were only a couple of people in front of her but Sabine didn't mind waiting regardless.

                                                                                   "Hey."

Sabine nearly jumps when she hears the new voice, turning around to see who it was. Much to her relief, it'd be the same cute, quiet girl from earlier.

"Hey," Sabine smiles at her, only hoping her hair was still just as perfect as it had been half an hour ago. She would sooner die than let a single hair be out of place in front of a hot girl.

"So, uh, you're a fan of cotton candy too?" she questioned.

"Yeah. I think pink is superior but the blue one isn't so bad either," Sabine answered.

                                                                                    "I totally agree," she nods.

"Oh my god, we have so much in common. How is it that we have so much in common and this is our first time meeting?" Sabine gasps.

"This... isn't our first time meeting. We go to school together. We've been in the same class for years," she swiftly corrects her.

"Seriously? Do you know me?" Sabine questioned.

"You're Sabine, one of the most popular girls in school."

Sabine smiles, flipping her hair over her shoulder. "Yeah. Uh, but... who are you again exactly?

"Hazel. I sat behind you for three years straight."

"Oh, well, duh. That's why I never saw you. You were behind me the whole time. Nice to meet you, Hazel," Sabine giggles, holding out her hand for Hazel to take.

"You too, Sabine," Hazel nods, smiling, as she shook hands with Sabine.

"We should hang out sometime. It's rare to find people these days that like both bread and cotton candy," Sabine nodded, pulling her hand away from Hazel - her hand which now felt all warm and tingly from Hazel's touch.

Hazel softly chuckles, nodding. "Sure, I'd really like that."

"Excuse me, you're next," the lady at the front selling cotton candy called out.

Sabine squeals in surprise before she goes up, deciding to order herself and Hazel cotton candy. Of course, Hazel was surprised by the act of kindness - knowing she had more than enough money for herself. But nevertheless, Hazel was thankful since PJ had thrown away her last one.

"Hey, thanks for that. I owe you one," Hazel replied, gingerly taking the cotton candy from Sabine. Their fingers brushed once again and Hazel quickly looks down at the cotton candy, acting as though it was the most interesting thing in the world.

"No need. I had a little extra and we both like the same flavor so I figured I might as well," Sabine reasoned with a smile.

"Did you wanna -?" Hazel began to ask.

"Bee! Bee, there you are! I've been looking everywhere for you," Brittany stomped towards her, grabbing Sabine's hand to pull her close.

                                                                                              "Huh? What happened?" Sabine questioned.

"Isabel's a mess and wanting to go home so let's go," Brittany ordered.

"Aw...," Sabine pouts, taking a bite from her cotton candy before turning to look at Hazel. "I've got to go but I'll see you later, Hazel."

"See you later, Sabine," Hazel waved at her.

"You can call me Bee. Everyone does," Sabine says over her shoulder as Brittany (gently) dragged her away to the car.

Hazel just watches as Sabine and Brittany walk off, feeling just a little disappointed that she couldn't spend more time with the girl. But she just hoped that Sabine would keep her word and they'd be able to hang out again.

After all, Hazel had harbored a stupid, (not so) little crush on Sabine for years now.
