twenty seven
Even though it's my last day working at the cafe it feels like it drags on at an agonisingly slow pace. As I deliver the various plates of food to customers all I can think about in my head are the various things I need to do before the car picks me up this afternoon.
Harry arranged everything for me; all I have to do after work is go home and collect my stuff. A car is going to pick me up an hour after my shift ends so as soon as I get home I have to work fast to get myself ready. It still hasn't really set in that in a matter of hours I will be in Paris.
"How ya feeling? Last day and all?" Ryan asks as I hand my last few orders over into the kitchen. He's been relatively quiet today, not eager to make conversation. I think he may be nervous to talk to me after Harry turned up at the cafe last week.
"Uh yeah, feels pretty good to be honest" I reply as I quickly head back out onto the floor with some plates in my hand to deliver. Just a little bit longer then I never have to come to this place again. I don't feel like I fit in here anymore; I never felt that I did. I guess mostly because I didn't make an effort to make friends with the staff. But ever since people saw the photo of Harry and I in the newspaper they've been acting weird around me, like they've put me up on some kind of pedestal for having a rich boyfriend. I guess it doesn't matter what the reason is, I'll be out of here soon.
"A couple of us were thinking about grabbing a drink tonight, you in?" Beth asks me in a bright friendly tone as I return to the counter. We've never really gotten along since I've been working here; she's very slack with her service so I end up taking on nearly half her tables every shift we work together.
"Uh sorry I've made plans for tonight, thanks for the invite though" I reply quickly, printing out a receipt for some customers who are ready to pay. It feels weird to say I'm going to Paris after work for some reason.
"So bring your 'plan' along with you, don't worry we will be nice to Mr Money Bags" I can hear Ryan's snarky tone reply from behind me. Of course he's all mouth now, when Harry isn't around he likes to be the big tough guy.
"No that's okay we have things planned" I turn back and reply to him, a rather fake smile plastered across my face. Behind him I can see a rather larger clock hanging on the wall. The hands are at the perfect position, I'm done. "And that's my shift!" I say giddily as I head to the staff room and begin to collect my things. I don't think I've ever left in such an excited hurry before, but I have to if I want to catch the quickest bus to get back to my apartment.
45 minutes later; a bald man in a dark suit is helping me carry my little suitcase down the stairs of my apartment building. My hair is still slightly damp from my shower but apart from that I'm fairly well organised. I have all my documents neatly packed in hand places in my bag, I've brought my nicest clothes in my suitcase and I even managed to throw some makeup onto my face before the knock at the door came.
I text Harry to let him know what's happening as the driver opens the car door for me. He's organised a town car; you know one of those sleek fancy ones that you see on TV. It's all a little much for a twenty minute drive to the train station. I offered to take a bus, but he has a less than ideal relationship with busses, I've got to take him on one at some point. My phone buzzes in my lap as the driver pulls out of the parking spot.
Harry 💖
"Enjoy, let me know when you're on the train x"
"Is the temperature alright for you madame?" The driver speaks after I hit reply on a 'will do' text to Harry.
"Yeah it's great thank you" I reply sweetly, I wonder why Harry didn't send John to come and get me. But he's probably taken John to Paris with him. What kind of a job description does John have, because he does a lot for Harry both personally and professionally. I would actually hope he would be too busy helping Harry with work to pick me up and drive me places all the time.
I rummage through my bag as we sit in a bit of traffic, ticking off the items in the checklist in my head. Charger, book, headphones, passport, travel documents, ticket, water bottle, snack, make up; I think I have everything all of the essentials. I know I'm overthinking this and I'm just being paranoid that I've left things behind or brought something that I can't have. I'm chalking it up to 'first time traveller' syndrome, the most travel I've ever done in my whole life was my move here to London so a train to Paris is a big deal to me.
I'm getting a bit anxious about having enough time to board when I get there. The train leaves in an hour and I still have to go through passport check and baggage check. Maybe it's different on trains than it is with airports? I have no idea, but I trust that Harry has sorted it out for me. My nerves are somewhat settled when the car pulls up outside of the train station and my door is opened by an older looking gentleman in a Eurostar uniform.
"Good afternoon Miss Elena, I'm here to escort you to your train" He tells me politely as my driver retrieves my bag for me and hands it to him. I'm being handed off from one professional to another, Harry is practically shipping me over to him like cargo. I can't really complain though, I made him aware of how I'm nervous about travelling on my own.
"Oh, thank you" I thank him quietly before he leads the way into the station. People are turning their heads to look at us as we pass by them, they probably think I'm in some kind of trouble as I'm being lead through by security. Though that curiosity soon turns to contempt as I skip to the front of the check in and passport control line.
I try to be quick, loading all of my possessions into the trays and passing them through the X-rays before presenting my passport to the female officer. Without so much as a word she ticks some boxes on my ticket and places a loud stamp to my passport before handing it back to me. The enthusiastic Eurostar helper is by my side after I collect my things, leading me down a set of stairs towards the platform.
"Right this way madame" The employee who's name badge tells me is 'Greg' gestures for me to board the train after him. I'm not the first one on board, as there are a couple of men in suits sitting around a table with laptops open in front of them engrossed in conversation. Greg leads me past them a few rows to a large comfy looking seat next to a large window. There is a small compartment beside my seat that Greg rolls and secures my bag into as I take my seat.
"Is there anything I can get for you?" Greg asks as I settle into the seat. "Tea, coffee, something a little stronger" he gives me a little cheeky grin and shrugs his shoulders.
"Uh a latte would be wonderful, thank you so much" I reply before he hurries off leaving me to get myself settled. This is so not my typical environment; everything feels very regal and fancy even though we are on a train, where I normally feel at home as I squeeze myself into the stuffy overpacked carriages. Now I have a seat that reclines and a menu with items I have never even heard of, plus a section that includes caviar.
Harry really does go all out when he travels, even if it's only for a few hours. I should have offered to pay for my ticket to go and see him instead of just letting him organise everything. I take out my phone as well as the charger and plus it into the port by the arm rest and send him a text.
"On train, thank you for the lovely seat and for organising everyone to help me x"
Greg places down the coffee in front of me as the phone buzzes on the table beside it.
Harry 💖
"You're welcome baby. Enjoy the trip, see you soon. X"
I smile at his response before I take out my headphones. I can't wait to see him, it's not even been two days and yet the anticipation is killing me. This whole travelling thing really does suck. I thought it would be fine because I didn't really know him and I figured I wouldn't feel this way about him when this all started. Him being around so much would have been good because I wouldn't have had to see him as much and I would have still been paid. But now it's turned into something that's pretty dam close to a relationship, so the fact that he's always so busy really blows.
I just hope he isn't bringing me out to Paris to then be so busy that he can't spent time with me. He takes his job very seriously, and success is very important to him, but I do hope he's carved out a bit of his time to explore Paris with me. It would be pretty daunting having to do it all alone.
Slowly I can hear more passengers begin to board the train behind me, indicating that we are probably going to be hitting the road soon. I plug my headphones into my phone and start playing some music, looking forward to zoning out for most of the journey to come.
My first real glimpse of France is farmland, the train quickly zipping by expansive fields and gentle rolling hills. To be honest at first it doesn't look all that different from farmlands in the UK, but when the train begins to slow down and gently bring us into the city does my excitement truly begin to set in. It's everything I've ever dreamed and yet somehow more. There aren't any famous monuments that are jumping out at me, but the architecture is so elegant and classic that you just know you are somewhere magical.
I gather all of my things together quickly as the train pulls into the station. Trusty Greg makes a reappearance as he helps to carry my bag out of the carriage and guides me out of the platform. We walk amongst a sea of other passengers with many more following behind us through a series of large gates. I can feel myself begin to panic because of the amount of activity surrounding me, and I know for sure it's about to double as we descend a small flight of stairs to reveal a large group of people waiting at the bottom. They're obviously looking for a familiar face amongst the crowd of us swarming towards them, I'm shocked and relieved to see that I spot a familiar face of my own.
Harry. He's here, I'd have expected him to have someone pick me up and bring me to him, but he's actually here waiting for me. I watch as his eyes scan the crowd with anticipation before they land on me. A sweeping grin covers his face as I begin to approach him after thanking Greg and taking my bag from him. I'm beaming from ear to ear as I practically skip over to where he stands, in his more relaxed attire of a white button up and a pair of jeans.
"Welcome to Paris darling" Harry says smoothly when I'm within earshot. I can't contain my delighted giggling as I stand on my tiptoes and wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him into a tight hug. A soft laugh shakes through his chest as he holds me equally as tight against him. The nerves fall away when I'm with him like this, it's like the comforts of home when I'm wrapped up in his arms. I slide my hands down his chest and place my heels back on the ground as Harry holds my chin and pulls me back towards him, kissing me gently. His lips taste sweet like strawberry jam as I melt back into him. I hum against his lips softly before his lips slip from mine slightly.
"Hi" I mumble against his lips grinning widely, Harry peers down at me before placing one last kiss on my forehead and taking a hold of the bag sitting patiently at my side.
"How was the train?" He asks me, sliding his arm over my shoulder, bringing me into the side of his body as he weaves us through the masses of people.
"It was lovely thank you, I would have been just as happy travelling on a standard ticket" I smile up at him and wrap my arm around his waist, anchoring me into him.
"I knew you would say that" he grins cheekily down at me as he leads me out of the train station and into the soft yellow sunlight. It's just how I pictured it in the movies, only better and without the light accordion music playing in the background. It feels so alive here; a group of people are gathered around a man with a string puppet as he makes the puppet enthusiastically dance around, a young girl is selling bunches of wildflowers from a cart to the side and cars weave their way around the tiny streets in organised chaos. I marvel at it for a moment or two before Harry leads me down one of the narrow paths and opens up the back door of a black Range Rover.
"Welcome to Paris Miss Graham" John smiles at me in the rear view mirror as I climb into the car and slide over to let Harry climb in beside me. Ah, there he is.
"Thank you John, how are you?" I smile as I reply. Harry shuts the door beside him and places his hand on my knee.
"Very good thank you Miss Graham" he politely replies as he turns the car on and pulls out of the parking spot and into the narrow road.
"Miss me?" Harry quietly asks me as he leans his head down to mine. He's moved himself into the middle seat so he can be right next to me, a decision I'm quite pleased with. I know it's ridiculous that I've missed him like this but it's the truth. I nod my head peering up at him, watching as the soft smirk appears across his face.
"Good girl, I missed you too" he replies in a soft sultry tone that pulls on something within my belly. My cheeks heat at his words, and I'm about to spend the whole car ride talking and getting lost within him when I remember where I am. I have to look out the window, capture it all in my brain so that I can remember it forever.
Harry sits patiently beside me, allowing me to take it all in while he gently skims his thumb over my thigh in a circular motion. I'm unable to contain my excitement, pointing out things to Harry that may seem so bizarre as we drive past them. Cafes with wicker seats outside, people weaving through traffic on their bikes with baskets in front, street performers and colourful art installations all grab my attention, probably annoying the crap out of Harry. But if he is annoyed he doesn't let on, peering out the window and smiling softly.
"I have a meeting this afternoon that I can't get out of. But it's a short one" Harry adds on quickly as the car turns off of the main road and down a narrow street. I shrug my shoulders, it's about what I had expected.
"But you should go out and explore a little and I can catch up with you when I'm done. I'll send some security with you" his fingers reach up to tuck some of my hair behind my ear as he speaks. I don't want to be annoying and needy, but I came here to spend time with him not his security team. Stop it Elena; he's a very busy man and there are some things that have to come first for him, accept that.
He sounds tired, he's not nearly as chatty as he usually is when we haven't been together for a few days. I know it's nothing I've done, because he was so excited to pick me up at the station and I couldn't possibly have made him mad in such a short amount of time. Maybe when he does finish his meetings I can get him to relax a little. I can help him take a step back and look at the big picture instead of allowing him to sit and think about all the little problems he needs to fix in the next few days. We're in Paris, the two of us, after so much uncertainty about whether we would even make this work here we are. I think that's something worth celebrating and enjoying.
"Sure, that sounds nice" I turn my head up to smile at him before resting it on his shoulder, willing my excitement not to completely slip away. I'm only allowed to sit there for a minute or two before the car pulls to a stop in front of a tall antique looking building, it doesn't look like a hotel so I'm a little confused.
John opens up my door as I climb out and wait on the curb for Harry to retrieve my suitcase from the back of the car. He leads me up a small set of stairs and taps a few numbers into a keypad beside a large set of double doors. A loud buzzing sound rings out before Harry pushes the door open, allowing me to walk through first. I'm met with a very elegant looking waiting area with marble flooring and sleek black finishings.
"I don't have an apartment at the hotel in Paris, so I have this place instead" Harry informs me as we begin to climb the curling staircase against the left hand side wall. "It's not really my style but it's only a few blocks from the hotel so it's nice and handy"
My boots make an echo as I climb the stairs behind him. We reach the third floor landing before Harry takes out a set of keys and walks down the hallway to the last door.
The apartment is so different to the one that Harry lives in back in London, it's so vibrant and full of life. A wave of colours hit me as I follow him in and place my bags down. The walls are a muted yellow and the furnishings are soft and white, however the art hanging on the walls and various smaller pieces of furniture and decoration are a flurry of bright colours.
"It's lovely" I say to him as I stroll around the space. There isn't very much to it, but it's still around 4 times the size of my apartment. There's a large round dining table by a large open window revealing a similar looking building to this one across the street. Directly in front of me is a set of glass doors with golden handles, leading to a small deck area.
"That's where I called you from last night" Harry informs me as he catches me staring at it. The view of the Eiffel Tower, it must be there. I hurry around the couch and lean my head against the window as I hear Harry's phone ring behind me. There it is, clear as day towering not too far in the distance is the monument I'd always dreamed of seeing, and it's just as beautiful as I could have hoped for.
"Hate to interrupt baby but we have to get going, I'll take you there tonight when it's all lit up" Harry takes his hand in mind and gently nudges me towards him away from the window. I would love to see it some more, but not without him there so I nod my head and grin as I collect my bag.
"Elena this is Mia and Devon, they're your security team. They'll be keeping an eye on you while I'm in my meeting" The two strong looking people stand on the curb as Harry and I exit the apartment building. They're both dressed in black and don't look like they want to be messed with, I'll be sure to listen to all of their instructions.
"Nice to meet you" I shake their hands and smile after Harry introduces them. I can now see that there is another black Range Rover behind the one that John drove us here in. One for him and one for me I guess, I hope it's not a pattern we repeat for a long time.
"I'll be an hour, two at the most" Harry spins me around to look up at him as he places his hands on my hips. Mia and Devon take it as their cue to leave us but not before opening the back door for me to climb into.
"Have fun at your meeting" I put on a positive tone as I reply. He dips his head down in response and places his soft lips on mine only for a moment.
"Highly unlikely. You have fun exploring, they'll take you wherever you want to go. I'll meet you there when I'm finished up" He cracks a soft smile as I slide my hands up and into his hair, twirling a few strands around my finger, just for fun.
"I'll see you soon" I say before he plants one last kiss on my lips before I climb into the backseat. Harry shuts the door and waves me off before the older man known as Devon pulls the car out of its parking spot, turning into the a main street to join the chaotic traffic before us.
