Chapter 43

I have never seen my father cry in my life. Never. Draven and I have only seen the cold, hard-ass side of him and if I'm being completely honest, I didn't think he was capable of that emotion. But it was nice to see he was still human.

Telling the kids what was going on, was a situation I wanted to avoid. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way. At first I wasn't going to tell them, but I felt that they had a right to know. Just in case...something bad happens. It was hard to see them break down the way they did. Thank god, for my mom. She always knows what to do in these types of situations.

When it came time for dinner, no one was really interested in eating, but we did so anyway.

After dinner we walked the kids to their rooms and tucked them in. I know they won't get any sleep tonight, knowing that their mother is in danger and I don't blame them. There is a chance they might never see their mother again. I shake the haunting thought away. I can't imagine my life without, Wren.

When our father was finished with his phone call, he informed us that it was time to go and neither one of us asked questions as we followed him to the car. We both knew it had to do with Wren.

The car ride was eerily silent, making the trip to the warehouse feel a million miles away. Once we arrived though, we got all the information we needed from James, and wasted little time getting ready. It's been a long time since I've had to suit up. I guess desperate times calls for desperate measures.

"They're going to wish they never met me," Draven says in a threatening tone. The expression on his face is deadly. I haven't seen him like this in-, well I don't think I have ever seen him like this.

Yes, I've seen him mad, but nothing like this. His hands are trembling with anger as he straps the last buckle on his vest.

"They're going to wish they never met any of us," Tucker, says. "Wren has impacted all of us in the most positive way possible and we would give our lives for her."

Everyone mummers in agreement.

I glance around the room in astonishment. Every one of them has a look of determination plastered on their face. I knew that Wren had helped a lot of them through some terrible times in their life, but never knew the impact she actually made.

When I look over at Draven, his eyes are soft and warm and for a second, I thought I seen a hint of a smile.

I make a mental note to thank Tucker for that when this is all over.

"Alright," my father's voice booms through the room. "Most of us have families of our own, waiting for us to return. This is war. There might be a chance you won't come back after this and if you choose to leave, I will understand."

No one moves a muscle and I find myself sighing in relief. We need all the help we can get. Especially since we don't know how many men are in or around the building.

"Alright then, let's move out."

***

We end up at the edge of the city. The woods to be exact. Goosebumps cover my body. I don't like the feeling that I'm getting.

James stops the van at the beginning of a dirt road and gets out. "We will be finishing our travel on foot," James says before shutting the door.

We must be real close.

James walks to the back of the van and opens the hatch. He grabs a few weapons and hands them to us. We look over the weapons making sure everything is in order before venturing into the woods.

Four more vehicles pull up next to us and everyone jumps out, grabbing their gear. I hope they know that we appreciate every last one of them.

"What if someone spots our vehicles?" I asks. If that happens, we are all as good as dead.

"Don't worry," James says, patting me on my back. "We have a plan."

Exactly four men jump into the drivers seat of the vehicles and take off down the road. "Where are they going? What if we need them?" This time it's Draven who asks the questions.

"Trust me, okay," James says softly. "They aren't far. Just down the road hiding in the darkness until we need them."

Draven doesn't trust that easily, especially him. I know he still feels some type of way towards James, since he found out about him trying to make a move on Wren.

Draven doesn't say anything and just nods.

"Alright," my father's says clapping his hands together, getting everyone's attention. "Let's get going."

Just as those words left his mouth a set of headlights emerge in the distance. We all make a break towards the tree line before anyone was able to spot us.

As the car creeps closer towards us, we duck our heads behind the thick brush. My heart begins to pound hard in my chest when it comes to a complete stop, just a few feet from us.

Draven taps my shoulder, getting my attention. He motions for me to get down on the ground and I do.

"I thought I seen something," a deep unfamiliar voice says. The next think I know, there is a spot light shining through the woods. I press my body closer to the ground , hoping that everyone has done the same.

Thankfully after a minute or two they shut the light off. "I think you're seeing things," another male says, before driving off down the road.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and push myself to my feet.

"That was close," Draven says next me.

"Too close," James states. "Let move before they decide to come back." He pull out what I found out to be a flashlight and blinks it a few times before shutting it off completely, letting the guys on the other side of the road know we are moving out.

After walking for who know how long, we stop and squat down. I pull out my night vision binoculars and search the grounds.

"There's only a few guards," I whisper handing the binoculars to Draven.

He pulls them up to his eyes and sighs. "Better look again," he tells me, handing them back.

This time when I pulled them up to my eyes, I frown at the sight. There are at least twenty guards on the ground and from what I can see a few on the roof. How didn't I see the before? A daunting feeling runs through my body. "Now what?"

James says something into his mic before answering me. "Watch," he whispers.

Once again I pull the binoculars up to my eyes, watching just like he said and just like that bodies began to drop like flies. I have never witnessed a mass execution before. I really don't like taking life, but I will if I have too and right now, we have too.

"Let's move."

We pull our weapons up and approach the building with caution, making sure not to step on any bodies in the process.

James reaches for the door and slowly pulls it open. He sticks his head in and looks around before entering. We follow close behind.

"Jen," Jakes voices booms through the room. "Where the hell is Penelope? She was suppose to be here an hour ago."

"She's already downstairs," Jen replies. You can hear a slight quiver in her voice. I peaked my head around the corner to see Jen staring at Jake in fear. "I meant to tell you-," he smacks her cutting her off. She hits the ground hard.

As much as this bothers me, I know we can't interfere.

"You were told to tell her to come see me when she got here."

"I did," she croaked, still holding her cheek. "She just ignored me."

Jake sighs and holds out his hand for her to take. Shockley she doesn't hesitate and let's him pull her to her feet.

"I'm sorry baby. I didn't mean it," he coos. "I've just been so stressed. I need that girl gone before the Knights find out she's here."

I look at Draven and he rolls his eyes. We both know he doesn't mean it and will doing it again.

On a side note, I'm glad he's worried about us.

"I'll be back, he kisses her head. "Stay put." She nods and watches him as he disappears through a door.

I watch as her eye search the room. When they land on me, she is quick to rush towards us. "You have to go now," she rushes out, tugging my arm. "Penelope has been with her for a while now and I don't know what she is doing."

She leads us through the same door that Jake went through moments ago and down a flight of stairs. As soon as we reached the basement, you can feel the shift in the air. It's dark, cold and smells musky.

Jen slowly peeks her head around the corner and gestures for us to follow. She leads us down the dimly lite hallway and stops. Voices could be heard in the distance. By the way Jen's demeanor changed, I know it's Jake, which she confirms a few moments later.

Jen shifts nervously. "This is where I leave you," she whispers shakily. "If he sees me, I'm as good as dead."

I nod my head in understanding. She didn't have to lead us as far as she did and it's much appreciated.

She shifts her attention to Draven. "Go get her," she tells him. You can see the pain in her eyes when she said it. "For what it's worth, I am truly sorry for hurting you," she tells him before walking away.

"I forgive you," Draven whispers more to himself, but I heard it.

James is the first to move forward. He is use to leading charges, after all, it is his jobs. We pull our weapons up and follow behind closely, keeping our guard up. We have to be careful, we don't know what a waits us around the corner.

The closer we got, the louder the voices. James comes to a halt.

"I need her out of here. I don't care what Penelope says, I want that girl gone," we hear Jake say. "Keeping her here is only going to bring trouble."

"Really? Because it kind of seems like you want her to stay," an unfamiliar voice says. "Ever since the club, you've had your eyes on her. Hell, after I whipped her around the club, you beat the shit out of me."

The more I listen, the madder I seem to get.

"Yeah well, you went a little overboard. You were only suppose to shake her up, not beat her up," Jake says sternly. "Next time follow orders."

I turn to Draven, who is shaking with anger. "I can't listen anymore," he tells me, locking his eyes with mine. You can see the anger in them, but behind that anger there is something else, something I never thought I would see. Fear.

I'm not going to lie, I feel it too and it makes me sick. We don't know what awaits us behind that door.

"Let's move out," James says and that's when all hell broke loose.

This chapter is unedited, like most. Still I hope you enjoyed it. Don't forget to vote, comment and share.
