Chapter 4
*Wren*
The man choked on what remaining wine he had left in his mouth, spitting it all over himself and the table. Reese rushes to the man's side and pats him on the back.
"Draven are you okay?" Reese asks concerned.
Just my luck the asshole from Sam's would be his brother.
Draven looks at Reese and points towards me. "That's the girl," he gasps between breaths. Reese's head snaps to me and then back to his brother.
Yep, I'm the girl.
"She's the girl from Sam's?" Reese questions raising his eyebrow. Draven nods his head quickly. Reese looks between Draven and me briefly before erupting into a fit of laughter.
He would find this amusing.
"Oh Wren, I should have known it was you," Reese laughs and holds his stomach.
"That's Wren?" Draven, asks in disbelief.
Reese nods his head through his laughter.
"So your best friend is...a girl?" Draven questions as he scans over my body.
"Yes," Reese responds laughing out louder this time. His face begins to turn beet red. I reach out to smack him upside his head only for him to snatch it midair.
I squeal as Reese, yanks me towards him, causing me to slam into his chest. I look up at Reese, who is smiling down at me. I smile back.
"I know you too well, Wren," Reese tells me still smiling. I chuckled softly and nodded in agreement.
Draven clears his throat, "So is this a friends-with-benefits kind of thing?" Draven asked pulling our attention to him.
"Not at all," Reese states clearly and snakes his arm around my waist pulling me closer to him. Draven's eyes follow his brother's movements like a hawk.
"So the two of you have never had sex?" Draven's eyes us both curiously. We both shake our heads no.
"Don't get me wrong," I would love nothing more than to have her fine ass ride me all night long," Reese jokes. Draven seems to tense up at this comment. That's strange. Men are so confusing. "But our friendship means more to me than sex," Reese tells him. I smile up at him and he gives me a peck on my forehead. Draven looks at us for a moment before picking up the menu and looking it over. Reese and I take our seats and do the same.
*Draven*
I pick up the menu and look over it. I can't believe the hot chick from the gas station is his best friend. After I left the gas station, I felt bad for the way I treated them. When I returned, to my disappointment she had already left. But I did get to apologize to Sam. I think that's what his name was.
I glance over my menu at her. Her eyes are trained on her menu. She probably thinks I'm an asshole. A lock of hair falls into her face and she gently brushes it behind her ear.
Her eyes connect with mine. I smile and revert my eyes back to the menu. Great, she caught me checking her out. Now she can add creep to her list. This day keeps getting better and better.
The next hour is spent in awkward silence. Reese tried his best to lighten the atmosphere but gave up after a few tries. He excuses himself, and heads to the restroom, leaving us alone. Now would be a good time to apologize.
Feeling a bit claustrophobic, I loosen my tie. "I'm sorry," I blurt out. "I didn't mean to treat you so coldly." I hope she can at least consider forgiving me.
She looks at me with those beautiful chocolate eyes and smiles. "It's okay, everyone has their bad days. Today just happened to be yours." Wow, I thought for sure she was going to tell me to go fuck myself.
Something catches her eye and she smiles wide. Reese apologizes for his absence and takes his seat next to her. "Sorry, it took me so long. I ran into an old friend." He chuckles. "You know how that goes."
"Are you guys ready to go?" He looks between us. Wren nods her head and Reese helps her from her seat. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around this friendship they have. It seems a little weird to me.
Reese laces his fingers through hers and leads her towards the exit. I follow behind them closely. She looks over her shoulder at me. I smirk and she blushes. Reese holds the door open for us and we exit the restaurant.
The rain is coming down hard now. "Wait here while I get the car," Reese tells us. We both watch as he runs through the rain towards his car. I take this time to look at her fully.
Her hair is in its natural state. No makeup. Dressed comfortably. She is a natural beauty that's for sure.
"Are you single, Wren?" I don't know why I asked.
She glances at me. "Ahh, yeah...I am." She blushes as if she is embarrassed that she is. A loud boom of thunder echoes through the air, causing her to jump.
"Are you okay?"
She nods her head keeping her eyes trained on the sky. The rain begins to come down harder, mixed with small dime-sized balls of hail. The wind picks up, sending rain and hail in our direction. She hisses and pulls her jacket up over her face to shield herself from the hail. I instinctively grab her by her waist and pull her back, pinning her between me and the wall. I can feel the little beads of ice hitting my back and head.
She looks up at me with kind eyes and I smile. The tension between us is unreal. When she places her hand on my chest, I actually shiver. The look on her face tells me she noticed too.
She furrows her brows and gasps. "You're bleeding." Without taking my eyes off her, I wipe away the small trickle of blood from my head. She then reaches her hand into her bag pulls out a tissue and places it on my head.
After a moment she pulls the tissue away and looks at me. "Are you alright?"
It's only a little cut. I don't know why she worried. "I'm fine. It's only a little scratch." She frowns and places the tissue back on my head. "You're very beautiful, you know that?"
Her eyes snap to mine. She opens her mouth several times, before whispering, "Thank you!"
"Today's going to be the death of me," she mutters and I laugh. She must be having a rough day herself. Her eyes widen in horror. I don't think she meant to say that out loud.
She groans and leans her head back on the wall. I tighten my grin on her waist. She lets out a shaky breath. I definitely have an affect on her.
"Hey, you guys alright?" Reese's calls out.
I pull away, putting some distance between us. "Yeah, we're fine!"
Reese pats me on the back, "Thanks for taking care of her man." He doesn't have to thank me.
He grabbed her by the hand and examined her. She giggles and swats at his hand, "I'm fine, Reese!" He sighs and leads her to the car. He opens the back door and she climbs in quickly.
"The news didn't say anything about hail," Reese runs his fingers through his wet hair. "That was crazy!"
"The news always lies," Wren, chimes in. She isn't lying. Half the time I don't think they know what they're talking about. I glance at her through the side mirror.
I notice she is shivering and turn the heat up. "Thank you," she manages to say through chattering teeth.
Reese backs out of the parking spot and begins to drive. Within minutes, we pull in front of a small white house. Not bad.
*Wren*
Reese pulls in front of my house and puts the car in park. Both Draven and Reese exit the car. Draven opens my door and holds out his hand for me to take and I do.
I guess he isn't so bad after all. I give him a smile and thank him. Reese rounds the car and pulls me into a bone-crushing hug, "I'll see you tonight."
"Not if you continue to hug me like this you won't," I groan. Reese releases his strong hold on me.
"Sheesh Reese, you're going to hurt her," Draven states with concern.
"Ah, she's used to it," Reese, chuckles dismissing his brother's comment.
"It was nice meeting you, Wren," Draven says with a sly smirk. I was going to be a good Wren, but I couldn't help myself.
"I could say the same, but I would be lying and I don't lie." I joke and walk down the sidewalk towards the house.
It actually was nice meeting him. When I first met him at the gas station I didn't like him, but now that I got to know him a little bit, he isn't so bad. His reaction must have been good by the way Reese laughed. I smile triumphantly to myself.
I open the door, sending them both a wave before entering the house. I lean my back against the door, pushing it shut and lock it.
The entire time, Draven was close to me. My body reacted to him. I've never encountered someone who could cause all my senses to go haywire, just by being close to me. I head to the kitchen and start dinner while I wait for my kids to come home from school.
Reese and a few friends are taking Draven to the club tonight for his birthday and he wants me to be there. Maybe I'll make extra pasta and take it with me as some sort of peace offering. I smile to myself and begin cooking.
