Chapter 30
Reese did me dirty, was the first thought that popped in my head when I seen Wren. That white ruffled sleeve jumpsuit he had picked out for her, hugs her perfect body in more ways than one, and her makeup and hair amplifies her beauty. I glance over at the beauty sitting in the passenger seat of my car. How the hell am I suppose to be a gentleman and keep my hands to myself all night when she looks like a goddess?
I turn my attention back to the road. If you was to tell me six months ago that I would be going on a date with the most beautiful woman that I have ever seen in my life, I would have laughed in your face. Yet here I am, thirty-three years old, going on my first date with a woman that has stolen my heart in such a short period of time. The best part is, she is changing me for the better and she has no idea she is even doing it.
"So...where are we going?" Wren asks, pulling me from my thoughts. I really don't want to disappoint her, but at the same time I want her to be surprised. She'll find out soon enough.
"That my dear, is for me to know and you to find out." I noticed out the corner of my eye her fidgeting nervously with her hands. I place my hand on her's and give it a light squeeze, "It's okay to be nervous. I'm nervous myself." She says nothing and laces her hand through mine.
As we get closer, I instruct her to close her eyes. She gives me a quizzical look, but does so without question. After parking the car in the closest space available, I exit the car and open her door. I gently take her by the hand and guide her out of the car, making sure she doesn't hit her head.
I pull her close and kiss her softly on her lips. "Make sure you don't peek," I whisper against her lips, before guiding her towards the Duquesne incline.
The Duquesne incline is one of the city's most popular tourist attraction. I use to ride it, just to ride it when I was growing up. The view never gets old. I carefully lead Wren up the steps and into the station and wait for our turn to go.
"Can I open my eyes?" Wren asks.
"Not yet! Just a few more minutes."
"Good, cause I feel stupid standing here with my eyes closed."
I chuckle, "You might feel stupid, but you look so beautiful doing it." Her cheeks begin to turn scarlet red, causing me to laugh.
Finally the incline is ready for us to board and I carefully guide her to a seat. A few other people board as well and in seconds we begin our trip to the top of Mount Washington.
"You can open your eyes now."
She opens her eyes and blinks repeatedly, adjusting her eyes. I'm actually shocked she kept them closed all this time. She looks around and gasps. "Is this what I think it is?" She asks with wide eyes.
"If you're referring to the Duquesne incline, then yes it is."
"It's beautiful," she says, before looking out the window.
When we reach the top, we head straight for Leomonta restaurant. "We will do some sightseeing after dinner. Okay?" She nods her head and laces her fingers through mine. The feeling of her hand in mine never gets old.
As soon as we enter the restaurant we were greeted by a very welcoming waitress. Her blonde hair was tied up in a tight neat bun. And the make-up she is wearing doesn't do her pale skin any justice.
"Table for two?," She asks.
"Actually I have reservations under Knight, Draven Knight for eight o'clock."
She looks down at a piece of paper on the stand in front of her and nods her head, "Please follow me." She leads us to one of many tables by the window and places our menus on it. "Your server will be right with you."
Wren begins to pull out her seat and I stop her. "That's my job," I remind her. Why she thought I wouldn't do it for her has me a little puzzled. She removes her hand and allows me to pull out her chair. After she was seated, she picks up the menu and begins to observe it.
"This is kind of expensive."
I shrug my shoulders, "Don't worry about the cost. Get whatever you want and enjoy the view," I tell her, taking my seat.
She glances around the room taking in the elegant decor of the restaurant. There are several tables placed by all the windows. Multiple fancy chandeliers hang from the ceiling lighting the place up perfectly, including the open table. I have to say the hardwood floor makes everything pop.
Wren picks up her menu and looks it over briefly, "I want a steak, well done. I've been wanted one for a while now."
"That sounds good. I think I'll have that to."
Just then our waitress makes her appearance. It's the same one that seated us. "Sorry, we're short handed tonight. My name is Miranda and I'll be your server. Do you know what you guys want?"
I order for the both of us, "We'll both have your Cabernet Strip Steak, well done with your best wine." She writes everything down and takes our menus.
"I'll be right back with your wine," she tells us before walking away.
Moments later she returns with our wine as promised and places two wine glasses on the table and pours us our wine. She then places the bottle back in a bucket full of ice and informs us that she'll be back when our food is done. Not even fifteen minutes have passed and Miranda wheels are food out to us. She places our plates in front of us, "If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask."
When asked to tell me a little more about herself she didn't hold back. She told me about how her parents struggled to care for her and how they died in a car accident when she was eighteen. How she was working for Sam when she met Maxen. She didn't go into much detail about their relationship, which I was grateful for. I know what Reese has told me and really don't want to hear anymore in fear of losing my shit. She told me that she had Oakley at the age of twenty-one and Greyson when she was twenty-three. I was actually shocked to learn that she was thirty-two. It never dawned on me that we were close in age. I thought for sure she was at least twenty-eight, like Reese. She had to grow up quickly.
She looked at me with curiosity. You can see the wheels turning in her head. "What's on your mind?"
She leans back in her chair, "Well, I was just wondering if what all Reese had told me is true." And there it is. I don't want to ruin vibe we have going.
"Are you sure you want to know?"
She shrugs her shoulders, "Why not? It's not like I'm going to think any less of you. Besides, I would rather hear it now...rather than later."
I fill both of our glasses with wine, "Alright if you say so. But my past isn't as...traumatic as yours was."
She places both of her elbows on the table and rests her chin on her hands, giving me her undivided attention. I started off by telling her about my fighting career and how I was the first one who knocked the shit out of Maxen, when he started fighting. She smiled at that. Then I proceeded to tell her how I was in a relationship for six years and got cheated on, which led me down the path of being a fuckboy. Breaking as many hearts as I could along the way. As I'm telling her this, I begin to feel guilty. I realized what a horrible person I was.
I shake my head, "I know, I sound like a cold hearted sna-," Wren cuts me off by putting her hand up.
"The Draven I know is far from a cold hearted snake. Just by looking at you I can tell you feel guilty for the way you treated those woman. Even I feel bad for them, but that's in the past. Everyone makes mistakes. Myself included. What matters the most is if you learn from them," she places her hand on mine. "The question is...have you learned from your mistakes?"
She stares me down with kind eyes waiting for my answer. That is a good question. Have I really learned from my mistakes? Can I be the man she needs in her life? Are the questions that are circulating in my brain. The calm circular motion of her thumb on the back of my hand eases my mind.
"Yes, I think I have and it's all thanks to you. If I wouldn't have met you, I would probably still be the arrogant fuckboy I was a few months ago today," and that's the truth.
When we were finished with dinner our waitress asked if we wanted any desert. We kindly declined and she hands me the check, telling us to have a good night. Wren tried to see the check but I fought her off swiftly. She doesn't need to worry about it. When I was finished paying and leaving a decent tip, we leave the restaurant.
"Thank you for tonight. I really enjoyed myself."
She's not the only one who enjoyed herself. I did as well. "I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, but the night is an over yet. I haven't been here in a while, but I want to show you my favorite place here," I grab her hand and guide her towards Grandview Avenue.
Grandview Avenue follows the entire length of the hill. It has four overlook decks protruding out over the mountain, give you the best view of Pittsburgh. When we reach the overlook deck, she walks over to the large set of binoculars and scans the skyline.
"It's amazing," she whispers. "I've never seen anything like it," she shivers and wraps her arms around herself. She should have told me she was cold. I takeoff my jacket and drape it over her shoulders. She looks up at me and smiles, "Thank you!"
When she was finished taking in the view. We sat quietly on one of the benches. She snuggled against my body and sighs. After a while, she yawns, letting me know it's time to go.
"Come, lets get you home."
She nods her head and stands. We take the incline back down and head home. I really didn't think I would enjoy a date night, but I have to say this was one of the best nights of my life.
When we entered the house, Reese was fast asleep on the couch. Wren walked over to the closet and pulled out a blanket to cover him with and kisses him on the forehead.
"I'm going to go to bed," she yawns. "Are you staying?"
I glanced over at Reese sleeping on the couch. He said no sex. He didn't say anything about not staying with her. "Yeah, I'll stay."
She leads the way up the steps. On our way to her room she checks on her kids, making sure they're sleeping. As soon as she enters her room, she strips down to her bra and underwear and slips on a t-shirt and short cotton shorts and climbs into bed.
I strip out of my suit and climb in beside her. She snuggles herself into my body and kisses my bare chest, "I love you."
My heart skips a beat hearing those words leave her mouth. I kiss her forehead, "I love you too."
