Chapter 25
We are literally five minutes away from the warehouse and I'm about to throw myself out the car. Ever since we left Wren's, he has been playing lovey-dovey mushy music, and I can't take it anymore. It feels like my ears are about to bleed. This is torture, pure torture.
If he thinks for one second I don't know why he's doing it, he better think again. He knows exactly what I was about to tell him on the porch earlier and now he's going to torture me until I say it. His musical tactics almost had me, but I'm not going to crack that easily. I'm going to make him work for it.
Besides I'm still confused. That's why I didn't go through with telling him. I've never fallen hard for somebody in such a short period of time before. The attraction is definitely there and I know for sure that I like her, but I'm not sure if I'm in love with her yet.
Jen was the only woman I have ever fallen in love with. When she cheated on me with Jack Lester, my rival in this business, I was devastated. The hurt and betrayal I felt was something I never wanted to experience again. So I shut myself off to the world of love and decided to become the asshole, playboy that I am today. I'm not even sure I know what love feels like anymore.
One things for certain though. Wren is an amazing woman and deserves the best and I hope I'm the one who can give that to her. I might not know her as well as Reese does right now, but I hope to have that same relationship with her that he does in the future. I just need to get my emotions straightened out before I go around dropping the love word.
Reese turns down a dirt road that leads to the warehouse. Our father owns a lot of industrial properties around the city of Pittsburgh, and the surrounding areas and most of them are secluded. He doesn't want nosy people snooping around his buildings and for good reason. We come to a stop at a gate. When the guard realized who we were, he let us through immediately.
Reese pulls up to the warehouse and we both get out. Finally, my ears get a break. As we approach the warehouse, a few security guards are standing by the door, with weapons in hand. They're dressed as normal security but they are anything but normal. These men are extremely dangerous. They greet us and one of them opens the door, allowing us to enter.
No sooner than we enter the warehouse, we are greeted by James. He shakes Reese's hand first and then mine. I'm actually glad he's here. I hadn't forgotten the incident that had occurred between him and Wren. I know it was before me, but I want to let them know that she's mine now and that shit won't be tolerated.
"Your father is waiting for you," he tells us, pointing towards the back and leads us through the chaos to find our father.
Men and women are neatly stacking wooden crates by hand as we pass. Ninety percent of these crates are full of weapons and drugs, while the other ten percent is merchandise for the clubs. Most of the people here are my father's most trusted personnel and have been with him for many years. He pays them well and treats them right and in return he gets their loyalty. Just how it should be.
As we round the corner, a group of men talking amongst themselves come into view, my father being one of them. Even though he has his back towards us, I can pick him out, out of the crowd. He's the only one out of the group who has short salt and pepper hair. As we approach, all the men stop talking and turn their attention towards us, including our father.
"Finally! Gentlemen, you remember my boys, Reese and Draven? He introduces us.
The all-too-familiar faces greet us kindly and shakes our hands. The last one though, not so much. After he shook our hands, he stared us down coldly. Reese and I shared a knowing look. Neither one of us have seen him before.
"Now that everyone is here, we can begin," our father states. "Follow me."
He leads us to an empty room, where there is a large table surrounded by chairs sitting in the center of it. A large light dangles just above it, leaving the rest of the room dark. My father takes a seat at the head of the table and I take the seat to the right of him, while Reese takes the one on his left. The rest of the men sit randomly around the table.
A woman enters the room pushing a cart. I recognize her from previous visits. She begins to serve us our drinks. When she gets to me, she sends me a flirtatious smile and slips her number under my glass. I ignore it and take a drink of my whiskey.
"Seems to me like someone is interested in you," my father jokes and elbows me in the arm.
My eyes land on Reese, who has a smirk on his face. "Sorry, I'm not interested," I tell him while keeping eye contact with Reese.
He snorts, "Since when?"
I keep my focus on Reese, silently begging him to step in. His smile widens. He likes watching me squirm. I can feel my father's eyes burning a hole in my skull.
"Since yesterday," I murmur into my glass as I take a drink.
"Draven got himself a girlfriend," Reese chimes in. "Why don't you ask him who?"
I clenched my jaw and shake my head. Reese and his big mouth. I really don't think this is the time or place to talk about something like this.
"Can we talk about this some other time? We have more important things to talk about then my love life," I grit.
My dad laughs wholeheartedly, "I can't believe those words just left your mouth. Besides we're all family here. Now, who is it?"
Reese leans his elbows on the table and rests his chin on his fists, waiting for me to answer. He looks like a child that just hit the jackpot at Chuck E. Cheese. He's going to pay for this.
I look my dad dead in the eyes, watching his sapphire blue eyes twinkle with delight. If what Reese says is true, they won't look like that after I tell him.
"Wren! My girlfriend is Wren! Now can we please drop it?" I beg.
His eyes narrow on me. I swear I heard his teeth crack as he clenched his jaws repeatedly. He stays silent and turns his attention back to the meeting.
During the meeting I sat quietly, trying my best to listen, but all I could think about was Wren, and how my father reacted to the news of me dating her. The look in his eyes was quite frightening to be honest. He has never looked at me like that.
I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn't even notice the meeting was over until someone touched my shoulder. I look up to see a face I didn't expect to see. Wren's beautiful chocolate eyes stare down at me. What is she doing here?
"What are you doing here?" I ask, standing from my seat.
"Reese said you might need me," she whispers.
I glance over at Reese and he winks. My father walks over to Wren, and pulls her into a hug.
"It's good to see you," he pulls back to look at her. "I hope he's treating you well."
"He is, I promise," she giggles. "He's not as bad as everyone says he is."
He looks at me in disbelief, "Really?"
"I didn't think you was actually serious." James chimes in. His voice is full of shock. "I thought you was just trying to get your dad all worked up."
I pull Wren close to me, "Not at all and don't think I don't know what happened between the two of you yesterday."
He definitely wasn't expecting me to say that. He opens his mouth but nothing comes out and I smirk. My father looks between James and I, "What happened yesterday?"
Reese chuckles and pats James on the back, "James got a little to close to our precious Wren."
James puts his hands up in surrender, "I didn't know she had a boyfriend."
"She didn't until later that's day," Reese reassures him.
"So you're scolding me for something that happened before you?" James glares at me.
I wouldn't consider this scolding. I'm just simply letting him know she's mine and only mine. That way there are no further incidents.
"Just letting you know, so there won't be any future...incidents," I tell him.
Wren tugs on the back of my suit. I look down at the beauty in my arms. Her smile is hypnotizing. I graze her cheek with my thumb and kiss her softly. Her body melts into mine.
A laugh, forces me to break the kiss. "I would have to say you have found your Kryptonite," my father says as he continues to laugh.
We all chuckled at him comment. Maybe he's right. Maybe she is my Kryptonite.
"I have to go," Wren sighs. "Your mother is waiting for me in the car with the kids. I just stopped by to see how things were going, before we went shopping."
She hugs everyone goodbye, including James and kisses me one last time before exiting the room. When she is out of sight, I turn my attention to my father, who is already staring at me.
"Having Kryptonite comes with consequences. We have a lot of enemies in this business and they are always looking for a way to take us down and they'll use her to get to you."
"I'll kill them," Reese, James and myself say simultaneously. Glad they both feel the same way.
He nods his head and takes a seat at the table, "For a while now I have been receiving threats. Ones that include harming your mother, you and...Wren."
My heart sinks. The room seems to be closing in around me. The thought of someone harming Wren, makes me sick.
"What? Why wouldn't you tell us sooner? I wouldn't have let her leave," Reese, shouts and for good reason. If he would have told us this earlier, she wouldn't have left my side.
James puts his hand on Reese's shoulder, and looks at my father, "What do you want us to do?"
"Protect her! I want someone with her at all times. Preferably, one of you three, and if for some reason, neither one of you are available, assign someone that is. Someone you trust with your life."
I can't believe what I'm hearing. Reese looks at me. I can see the fear in his eyes. It's the same fear, I know is in mine.
"What about now," I finally find my voice. "Don't you think she's in danger right now?"
He shakes his head, "I have your mother, heavily guarded. She's safe."
I don't care how guarded she is, I won't feel safe until she is standing right next to me. After today she's not leaving my sight. Not even for a minute. I'm not taking any chances.
