Chapter 30
Axel Valdez
Its been six months since the results came in and the days of continually visiting the hospital, hoping for some ways to save her. The medicines that they doctor gave were not giving their affects on her anymore. Even the doctors lost their hopes and sent her home.
Three months ago she started using this stupid wheelchair wherever she went. She became thin and weak..her face started to drop, her hair started to fall, which made her to drop out of school and always stay in bed rest. She couldn't speak properly nor eat anything. She became an old lady within months.
Sitting beside her bed as I tried to make her eat some porridge. Seeing her like this made me really sad. The doctor said that she doesn't have much time left. Left alone with my thoughts, I was brought back to reality as Lyn pulled my sleeve to grab my attention. She said something but I couldn't hear it as her became very low day by day. I leaned in towards her mouth to hear her clearly.
"Can we visit the sea?" She said slowly. I looked at her, "no we can't." I said.
"....but you said you will take me." She said breathing in between every words. I had to give in so I nodded and agreed to take her. "But first you've to dress warm." I said and left the room to tell Ms. Storm about taking Lyn out for a walk at the sea. Thankfully the sea was near so she agreed on letting us go. After she got dressed I put her in her wheelchair and wheeled her out of the house and towards the sea. The spring breeze was blowing swiftly as the flower petals fell upon us. Lyn was happy to come outside of her room and breathe in the fresh air.
The calm sound of the waves, and the seagulls were very soothing. Lyn pulled my sleeves making me lean towards her.
"...can we come here again?" She said looking at the shore and then at me. I nodded. "Can you promise that you will be happy?" She said slowly but I knew she was serious. I nodded bring up my pinky finger and folded it around hers. She smiled and that made my heart skip a beat.
"I'm so happy today." She said closing her eyes. I got scared as she closed her eyes.
"Lyn!" I said as tears filled my eyes. Opening her eyes she smiled and rubbed my tears away with her thumb. "Can I hug you?" She asked and I nodded. Leaning in to hug her tightly..but couldn't as I was scared that I might break her bones.
"I'll miss you..." she whispered smiling. "Stop saying that in past tense Lyn...you wi--" I stopped talking as I turned to look at her but she only smiled and closed her eyes. "Lyn! Lynn!" I started crying as I hugged her lifeless body. Its as if the whole world stopped moving.
"Axel, where are you going? Its not lunch break yet." Steve, my colleague said as I picked my suitcase and coat. "Its my half day today, remember." I said and turned around to leave. I picked our daughter from her school and went to meet her. I adopted Katie after graduation as Lyn wanted. She's now nearly nine. I wish Lyn could see how quickly this girl was growing up.
The spring breeze is blowing swiftly as the flower petals fell upon me. The road is still the same, the waves, the seagulls still is very soothing. I sat on the sand and looked at the sea remembering the promise that I made to her at this place. After a few minutes later, I stood up and went to a florist to buy her favourite flower. Walking out of the florist shop buying her favourite flower I called Leon. Katie was sniffing the flower in my hand as I waited for him to pick up the call.
"Hello!" Leon said from the other side. "Leon, how are you?" I asked.
"I'm fine..what about you?" He replied. "I'm as usual busy with works." I said, "I'm going to see Lyn do you have something to say to her?" I asked.
There was silence for a minute and then he replied, "Not yet..I'll tell her myself after I return from this business trip. Its really important...I gotta go now. Wait how is our little Katie?" He said and I replied with a fine. "Then talk with you guys later I've got to go now." He said and disconnected the call. I heaved a sigh and taking Katie's small hand we continued walking to our destination.
After hours of walking up the hill..we finally got to our destination. Walking near the ginkgo tree we sat under it leaning our back against the trunk, as I looked at the wonderful scenery of the city. Katie placed the flower near her as she settled beside me.
"You are really lucky, Lyn. To be able to see this beautiful scenery every single day." I said as I took a breathe in the fresh air.
"So time surely doesn't wait for anyone. Its been five years already and I've so much to tell you. But first of all look who brought flowers for you." I said looking at Katie with the flower beside me. She looked at me and stood up from her place smiling and walked to the other side with the flowers. Placing it in the middle.
"Have you missed us?" I said. No answer. "We missed you a lot. To be honest I missed you every single day. I wish you stayed a bit too longer." I said as I tried to control my tears from falling.
"As I promised last week we'll spend the whole day with you. So you have to listen to us all day." I said laughing as I remembered how much she hated me for talking too much.
"Mommy, do you know I made a new friend today and the teacher was very nice.." Katie said as she smiled happily.
"Yesterday..." I started telling her my office life while looking at the pure blue sky, and the smell of cherry blossoms in the air.
My life kind of stayed the way it always was..but the one thing that is missing is you. You came into my life suddenly and then suddenly you left.
