Chapter 25

Leon Storm

When I came back home after a long walk I found Lyn lying on the kitchen floor unconscious. I rushed to her and hold her in my arms. I don't know how long she was here but her whole body was cold as ice. A flood of thoughts came rushing into my mind.
What if its back again? Is she gonna die? When's the due time? What's gonna happen now? Will she make it?
I pushed all the thoughts away and picked Lyn up in bridal style to her room. I yelled out to mom who came running towards me.
"Oh my god what happened Leo?" Mom screamed at me panicking. I placed Lyn on her bed and turned to mom, who is now walking to and fro in front of me.
"Should we call the doctor, hon?" Mom asked me biting her fingers profusely.

I nodded at her taking my phone out from my back pocket. I called the doctor's number and waited for the other line to answer it. After minutes of waiting the line connected and I was greeted with a calm voiced gentleman.
"Hello?" The voice on the other line spoke. I cleared my voice and replied looking at Lyn, who is lying unconscious in her bed with mom beside her wiping her tears away.

"Is this Dr. Larry Stewart?" I asked the gentleman.
"Yes it is me. How may I help you?" He replied and instantly his calm voice changed into a professional one.
"Lyn's not feeling well uncle." I said.
"OK I'll be there." He said and hung up.

Dr. Larry Stewart is my dad's best friend. Well he was as mom said when we were kids. He was always with our family and really loves us....like a father. Sometimes I wished he was our dad. But it can't be, right? But I don't have a genie in a bottle, right?

I was swept away from my thoughts when I heard the doorbell ring. I ran to answer it. It was Dr. Larry.
"Hello uncle!" I greeted as soon as he stepped in our house. He nodded with a smile and went straight to Lyn's room. I followed him behind as I knew he would not say anything until he saw Lyn. He always loved Lyn more than me...I don't know why.
For like fifteen minutes he checked on Lyn. We waited. Waiting patiently for him to say something. The silence in the room broke as Dr. Larry sighed sadly. He stood up from his sitting position beside Lyn on her bed, and covered her with a blanket. He turned towards us with a sorrowful face the exact opposite of what he had when he came here. His look made me anxious and I walked towards him and looked into his eyes.
"I'm sorry but its too late...we can't do anything." He said.
"What do you mean?" I asked. He took a deep breath and explained what he meant to us. Mom just stood rooted at the doorway without making any sound, while I just listened to whatever he was saying about Lyn patiently. After he finished he grabbed both my shoulders and looked at me...straight in my eyes.

"Look Leo, I know its really hard on you right now and I can understand what you're feeling right now....but you have to relax and stay strong. Not for you but for your mom...Lyn." He said. I jerked his hands away and stepped a few steps back.
"How the hell can I relax? You said that she will be saved, didn't you? Then how can you say now that it can't be helped, she can't live anymore." I shouted sternly at him as tear slided down my cheeks. I flopped on the carpeted floor as my legs gave away on me. Mom came running towards me and engulfed me in a tight hug.

"Uncle you said that you found a cure, right. We can use it then." I said rubbing my tears. He sighed and knelt down in front of me.
"Leo, I know but its not the same anymore...her disease is..very rare. Its like something unpredictable is growing inside her. It's spreading throughout the body and to be precise, there isn't any medical treatment that can heal her." He said and patted my head like he used to do when I was a kid. I nodded.

It was silent for some time, then I heard a stir beside me. We all turned our head towards the now moving Lyn. She was stirring in her sleep then very slowly opened her eyes. She blinked for some time trying to adjust the brightness in the room.
"Good morning everyone!" She greeted rubbing her eyes sleepily. We all smiled at her.

"Its night you silly!" I said laughing at her. She remained silent not moving a bit. Trepidation crept over me as I looked at her still figure.

"Hmm..seems like our Lynnie isn't fully awake yet. So why don't the rest of us go drink some coffee while she gets some more sleep, eh?" Uncle Larry said breaking the silence. Mom and I nodded simultaneously.

They both left the room talking among themselves. I stood up to walk out too but was stopped in my tracks as Lyn grabbed my hands tightly. I turned towards her and smiled a bright smile. Her face was pale as she looked down.
"What happed Ly?" I asked tapping her head. She looked up at me then back at her lap.

"I don't want to die yet." She said not looking at me. My smile faded and felt blood drained out from my whole body. I just stood there and my breathing stopped. Only one thing kept roaming in my mind 'Did she heard us talking?'
"Answer me Leon." She said. I recovered from the trance and plastered a smile on my face trying my best to resist the tears from rolling out.

"Silly girl! What are you saying all of a sudden?" I said laughing. "I heard you guys talking about my health and its serious, maybe fatal." She said looking at me, her eyes teary.
"Shush! You're not gonna die yet...and you'll get treated soon. Don't think too much about it." I said wiping her tears and kissing her forehead.

"Now stop all this teary shits and be a strong girl." I said pinching her cheeks playfully. She nodded.

"Yep Lion!" She said laughing. I laughed too. For the first time, I didn't get angry at her calling me names....because maybe deep in my mind I thought that this would be the last time I'll hear her call me names.
