Chapter 12
When I enter the room the screams originated from my heart stops. Two girls, Jesse and Dawn, are sitting side by side on the floor. The dark haired, earthquake causing metahuman is standing behind them with her hands to their heads. Caitlin, Harry, and Cisco walk in and stop. Harry sees Jesse sitting helplessly on the floor and his eyes go wide.
"Hello Flash," she says.
"Who are you," I ask, masking my fear that I have towards the girls.
"My name is Daisy," she responds matter of factly. "I was sent here by Zoom. To kill you." She says that last part almost cheerfully.
"Zoom? Who is that?" Cisco asks, looking a bit upset that he didn't get to choose the nickname.
"Oh you know," she purrs. When she realizes that we actually don't know who Zoom is she rolls her eyes. "Black suit? Blue lighting? He runs really fast?"
I see Dawn's eyes go wide in recognition. Zoom is the speedster who killed her parents. "Why does Zoom want to kill him?" Dawn yells angrily. Daisy turns toward Dawn and smiles.
"Because sweetie, Zoom wants to finish what he started and kill you. And the Flash is the only thing standing in his way. As soon as I kill you," she says to me. "He can come kill her."
Then suddenly she lifts her hand to the ceiling above me. Small clear waves come out of her palms and a loud rumbling can be heard. I look up and she that a large chunk of the ceiling is falling down towards me. I hear Dawn scream "No". I look in her direction. Then suddenly everything moves in slow motion. Except for Dawn. She is running at me at normal speed; a trail of yellow lightning is flowing behind her. Then just before the ceiling crashes on top of me I feel myself being pushed out of the way with Dawn's small hands.
I hear a large crash then look back half expecting Dawn to be under the rubble. Instead, she is standing right beside me. Before I forget, I run to Daisy and put her in the Pipeline. "You're not getting out this time."
When I get back up to the Cortex everyone is still shocked about what had just happened. Did Dawn just use the speed force? Dawn smiles.
"Well I guess I'm going to have to make a new suit," says Cisco.
Dawn smiles wider.
«»«»«»«»«»«»«»
"No," I say sternly.
"But-" Dawn pleads.
"No way," I repeat.
"Please, I can help you!" Dawn is trying to talk me into letting her be the Flash's sidekick.
"It's too dangerous! You could get killed."
We go back and fourth like this until Cisco interrupts us. "Guys, I think we know how to settle this. Barry will run on the treadmill to see how fast he can go. Then Dawn will see how fast she can go. If Dawn can go as fast or faster then she is an asset and therefore will be on the team as a speedster."
Dawn agrees immediately. Honestly, I have been running for a year now, Dawn has only been running for about an hour; I'm pretty sure I can beat a fifteen year old girl.
I step on the treadmill mill first. I pick up speed until I'm going a little over mach 3. Then when I can't go any faster, I stop and walk into the viewing room.
"Bet you can't beat that," I say.
"Okay sure," Dawn says sarcastically.
She walks into the training room and starts to run. She accelerates to 500 mph, then 600 mph, 700, 800. Then the air around her starts to pick up as she increases her speed. Wind starts to turn as she runs, causing a tornado like formation. Cisco and I look at each other with the same question on our face. What is happening?
The speedometer reaches to about 3000 miles per hour before Dawn slows down and stops. She walks into the viewing room and we all gape at her. She looks at us with accomplishment. "So did I beat you?"
We all nod our heads. I really hate the idea of Dawn risking her life, saving the city with me but from what just happened, I can't deny that she is needed. And then there is that weird wind thing that was going on when she ran. Everything is silent, like we are all in shock. Then we start talking all at once.
"Why do I have powers now and not when I were first injected with your speed drug?"
"How can she go so fast?"
"What was that wind thing going on?"
"What now?"
That last question makes us all stop. What does happen now? I see Dawn yawn and her eyes are struggling to be kept open. Then I look at my watch. How is it already three in the morning?
"I think now we all need to get some sleep," I say. Dawn nods.
"Well I'll be working on your new suit," Cisco says to Dawn. He gasps, "And your super hero name! How 'bout.. Inertia."
Dawn laughs. "Meh. That sounds more like a super villains name." Then she turns to face me, "Race you home!"
I laugh. "I have the keys." Dawn then makes a quick move around me. She dangles the keys from her pointer finger.
"Not anymore," she teases. And then she speeds off. I roll my eyes then follow her. When I get inside the house I see Dawn lying on the couch.
"What took you so long?" she asks sarcastically. I smile but my grin fades when I remember what I need to tell Dawn. She sees my change in mood and stiffens. I walk over and sit next to her.
"Dawn, do you understand that if you help me fight crime in the city you could die?"
"Do you understand that if I don't, I am wasting my powers? How could I live with myself if someone in his city died and I did nothing about it?"
"You didn't answer my question," I say a little too sternly. Dawn cowers into herself and I instantly feel bad.
"Please don't do that," I plead. She looks at me questioningly.
"Do what?" she inquires.
"That thing you do when you cower into yourself. You do it a lot. You did it a lot more when you were in foster care." She nods.
"Sorry."
"It's fine," I say reassuringly.
"I understand. And I'm sorry for putting you in this position. I don't want you to worry about me anymore than you already do."
"Don't be sorry," I say giving Dawn a small hug goodnight. "Get to bed, we have training to do in the morning." I turn to go to my room and start walking.
"Barry?" I turn back to Dawn's small voice. "Do you regret meeting me?"
I think about her question for a second. My mind flashes back to that night when she apologized for coming into my life. She has brought some anguish into my life that I thought I would never have to go through, but how could I ever regret meeting a girl who has made my life so meaningful. I stalk back over to her and grab her hands.
"Never. I know many people have left you in your life but I am not one of them."
She nods.
