Chapter 5
It was fun to break something. A payback of sorts, you know? I expected everything to go easy, but I was slightly surprised when I was attacked immediately.
Attacked being a very exaggerated word.
It seemed that a wolf had been stationed near my side, just around the corner; when he came into view and caught sight of me, he didn't hesitate.
He just tackled me.
The breath left my lungs in a whoosh, his weight crushing my chest until I let out a wheeze. He immediately shifted his weight, taking the pressure from my lungs. I took a moment to regain my bearings; then I reacted.
I drove a fist into his side, trying to catch him off guard. It worked. He grunted, leaving him vulnerable for a second and I took advantage. Bringing my knees up, I shoved my hands against his chest to use the combined strength of all my limbs to throw him off. He flew off me, looking so shocked it was comical.
Feeling confident, I jumped up, taking on a defensive stance. He got up slowly, wincing slightly while his hand gripped his side. His blue eyes were wary, more guarded as he assessed my stance. Spreading his hands at his sides, he tried to look unthreatening.
"Look," he began, but I didn't let him finish. I ducked, driving my shoulder into his stomach and bringing him to the ground. The move felt good, if not a bit uncomfortable. It was great to stretch my muscles after being dormant for so long.
"Look," I mocked him, grinning mischievously. "It's not nice to have someone tackle you. Especially since I've been out for fucking eight days. Now tell me: Were you going to stop me?
He growled and heaved, managing to roll over and pin me. He was careful to keep skin contact to a minimal, which I found amusing. Usually males couldn't keep their hands off me.
He looked so confused that I pitied him. His blue eyes were cute with that whole surfer look going on with his shaggy hair and bronzed skin.
"You're a fine specimen, wolf. What's your name?"
I've thrown him off course again. "What?" He gaped again.
I made myself smile, giving a little giggle as if I was the sweet girl I fucking wasn't. "Your name, sweet thing. I'd like to know what to call you before I give you the fiercest romp of your life." In a sense.
His eyes grew wide, but I saw I was having an effect on him. It was impossible for any male not to. Vampires loved our blood; wolves loved our other, more agreeable assets. He shifted on top of me, his face going slack when I arched my back so that my breasts touched his naked chest. He was quite warm, which was prominent through the thin bandage around my upper body.
He groaned, completely bespelled with my seduction. I added a purr to my voice. "Why don't you let me go and I can show you a good time?"
He looked very tempted, but still, doubt lingered on his face. "But-"
I kissed him, opening my mouth to brush my tongue against his lips. He gasped, shocked. His grip slacked around my wrists and I pulled free, bringing my hands up to cup his face.
I broke away when he didn't respond. I let my eyes droop as I stared into his eyes, making sure that he was trapped in my gaze. He was breathing heavily, looking confused while a bit of desire peeked through.
"Why aren't you kissing me back?" I whispered to him while I focused my mind on Cam.
He was waiting impatiently in his room, occasionally telling me to hurry up.
I'm dealing with a wolf here. It'll help if you can put in a hand.
You know I don't like to use my ability like that.
As well as you know I don't like to make people pass out using pressure points.
I turned my attention back on the wolf, whose eyes were narrowed as if he was trying to concentrate. I gave him a timid smile, brushing my palm down his neck and chest, making him shiver. I wished I could do this all day, since I hadn't had this much fun in ages, but I had a brother waiting on me. I knew he would warn me if any wolves came near.
It seemed, he reported, that most were patrolling the boundary. He also warned me that the women in the house would've heard the glass breaking, which made me decide that I had to speed this up.
"What's your name, lovely?" I caressed his jaw with my knuckles.
He blinked, his pupils dilating. "Jared."
I bit my lip, deliberately touching the curve of his. "Don't you like kissing me?"
"I..." he trailed off, looking like a lost puppy being scolded. "I don't..."
"Shh," I whispered with a soft smile. He was so easy. "Just one kiss."
Ready? I asked Cam.
He sighed raggedly. Fine.
I wound my arms around Jared's neck and pulled his lips down onto mine. This time, when I parted my lips, his moved with mine. I brushed my tongue over his bottom lip, making him shudder. His mouth opened hesitantly, joining in timidly as I led him into an oral dance.
He moaned slightly, his hand moving to touch my back and draw me nearer. I felt Cam starting to suck at his energy, gently at first so as to not alert him. Jared could easily mind-link his pack if he realised something was up.
We broke away for air and he buried his face into my neck, breathing deeply as he tried to calm his erratic heartbeat. I grinned at the air above me.
I ran my fingertips up his spine, leaving behind a trail of goosebumps. "You're a hot kisser, Jared." He shivered at the sound of his name.
I could sense him getting tired, so he didn't put up much of a fight when I rolled us over. I straddled his hips where I could feel the effect I had on him. Circling his flat nipples with my thumbs, I leaned in until our lips were a hair's breadth apart.
"Jared," I whispered, making my voice slightly husky.
He stared up at me, blinking rapidly as he tried to stay awake.
"Yes," he whispered back raggedly, swallowing.
"You make me feel so hot, Jared." I was definitely turned on, loving it when I got to dominate men with my mere presence. "You should tell your alpha-" he tensed a little at the mention of his alpha, but I smoothed his tight muscles and made him relax again "-that he missed his chance. Know this: you'd make a delightful lover."
His eyes were already closed and I knew he was slipping into a deep sleep. I lowered my lips to his ear, letting my breath brush the side of his neck. "Sleep, Lover."
His breathing deepened and a small smile graced his lips. I kissed his forehead to greet him, speaking an ancient word that was only known to the few elders of Faery.
Sister!
The spell was broken and I glanced up. Are there any wolves at your window?
No, but one of the women is outside my door. She wants to come in and find out what's going on.
I frowned, extracting myself gently from my now marked lover. Took them long enough. It's been fifteen minutes since we broke the windows.
It felt like hours ago. I felt revitalised, though. Seducing men always had that effect on me. I sensed Cam rolling his eyes as he guessed where my thoughts were, feeling my emotions clearly.
Yeah. It can't be good. It's understandable when they're too scared to come and look, but this one is older than the other one. Maybe she mind-linked the rest of the pack.
I nodded. They probably told her to scope out the situation. Which means we have to move.
Cam snorted. That's something knew.
Shut up, or I'll chase you up a tree again when we're on the run in the next hour or two.
He huffed. Well then. Get on with it!
Leaving Jared laying on his back, I crept up to the corner where he'd come from. Glancing around it, I took in the small un-mowed lawn, wrinkling my nose. So, someone was too lazy to tend their garden. Typical of males, even though my kind was the best of them in that perspective.
I traced no movements, and when I lifted my nose I caught no scents. In my regular form, my senses were keener than most, useful at times, but not as much as the form of an animal. I didn't detect anything unusual, though I could easily miss something hiding in the brush on the other side of the lawn. My nose just wasn't that strong.
I crept along the wall, keeping my ears trained on every sound.
Any signatures?
Cam took a moment to search the area around him – unlike me, he could sense energy signatures from a mile away, and at full strength half a mile further. They must have kept him well fed while I was unconscious.
Yeah, he replied suddenly. One's approaching fast, while four others are walking slowly our way. Feels like they're going to surround the area.
I wondered why they didn't all come in at once like last time, but didn't dwell too much on it. I finally reached the next corner of the house, and as I leaned around it, I saw the gravel driveway Cam had been talking about.
Has that woman left yet?
Yeah. When she figured out I was blocking my door, she left in a hurry. I suggest we do the same.
I can take them. You don't have to be worried, bro.
He snorted. Yeah. Like the last time you handled it.
I narrowed my eyes with irritation, making sure the driveway was empty before I walked out, straddling the wall so that, if one of the wolves inside looked out a window, they wouldn't immediately spot me. They probably already knew I was gone, though, since I hadn't blocked my room like my brother did.
If you'd listened to me when I told you to run – or even stay in the tree, like a good, quiet boy – then I could've killed them all and be done with it.
Why kill them?
I hesitated. It wasn't a surety that they weren't sent by the vamps. If we were captured, we would be in a vulnerable position by being in their mercy. I'd rather be sure there's no possible risk and be in the upper hand by hunting them while they're least expecting it.
But they're average wolves.
I know that, I snapped, my good mood from earlier dissipating. Which is why you shouldn't worry. Let me take care of this.
You'll get hurt.
I smirked. Don't insult me, you toad.
He sighed but what he said was, Over here.
He waved from his room's window. I frowned at him, making a shushing motion with my hands even though he hadn't spoken aloud.
Like I can't see the broken window, I muttered.
He was on the right side, a red ford fiesta parked directly beneath his window. How convenient.
He echoed my thoughts with a string of denial. I'm not jumping from a three storey building.
You're on the second level, you idiot.
It's still high!
I chuckled softly. That's what he'd said when he had to climb the tree. He realised this too and I saw him grimace.
Glancing around me once more to make sure the space was secure, I eased away from the wall and approached the red ford.
He watched me warily. Are you going to catch me?
Of course, I reassured. I'll not let you fall.
No, he said ironically. You'll let me flatten you.
I heaved a sigh, spreading my arms with an encouraging smile. You worry too much. I'm strong and you know that.
Yeah, he said dryly as he remembered our many playful scuffles. But you've been hurt and through a lot of stress lately.
I gave him a bolstering smile. Come on, little brother. I've had eight days to sleep it off; I feel in brilliant shape. Even Devan wouldn't be able to beat me right now. I was referring to my much annoying trainer.
He shook his head, throwing his arms up in a helpless gesture, but he was grinning slightly, looking calmer than before. And then his grin slipped.
A wolf just arrived, he warned, his eyes growing worried. At the back.
No problem. These dogs are easy to put to sleep, I said mischievously.
He shook his head. Take cover; this is a female.
I got a feeling I knew who.
