3. The Ghostie Girls Of '79

"And you're sure." Donna heaved, pedaling as fast as she could. "That it's not just a human."

"I'm a hundred percent sure it's not just a human."

He went as quickly as he could to gather up all his friends, Camden was already up, as him and his family all get up at the same time to have a family breakfast, it's weird. Donna and Alec were in deep slumber when he came knocking at their door, but once he had explained the situation they were up and ready to head out.

They skidded to a stop along the dirt path as Benaiah had spotted the large stick he stuck out the ground to tell him where to go. The ghostie wrappers were also still tossed around inside the forest.

"Come on guys, it's just through here."

As he reached the small clearing he could see her, sort of, she looked more translucent than before, and now she was floating in the air, peacefully sleeping.

He coughed. "Hey, um, Zoe, me and my friends are back."

She opened her eyes lazily and got on her feet, he could see her color was coming back. He smiled.

"So, we should come up with a plan so, um," He plopped himself on the grass. "Everyone sit."

They all took seats in a circle, he could see the way his friends were looking at Zoe, like she was, well, she actually was, a ghost.

He looked around at them for a minute, the silence wasn't awkward, just weird.

Donna smiled. "So Benaiah told us on the way that we're going to help you find your sister and friend."

Zoe nodded slowly. "Yes, I haven't been able to find them for years."

"Have you been looking for them?" Benaiah asked.

She looked at him and frowned. "I can't wander to other parts of the forest, it's like my body won't let me, I start to fade, then I'm placed in the Land of Spirits, where ghosts with unfinished business live, I spend most my time there."

Benaiah and his friends shared a look. This was insane. A land full of ghost, just ghost, wander around somewhere near, somewhere they couldn't dream to reach.

Donna spoke up. "Have you tried looking for them in the Spirit Land?"

Zoe nodded. "It's such a big place, and when I'm there I mostly spend time exploring the land, no one's seen them, or heard of them before, it's hopeless."

Benaiah reached out and grasped her shoulder. "Don't be so upset, maybe they didn't have unfinished business."

They stayed silent for a while. Alec and Camden didn't speak. Benaiah remembers all the torments they shouted towards the woods, sure they thought they were screaming to nothing but they were. Maybe they felt bad, or maybe they're just trying to take it all in.

Who knows anymore anyway.

"Or," Donna said. "What is they're in a different part of the woods."

They all looked at her, Donna could do that, she could have everyone look at her, pay attention to her. Her confidence was ground shaking, it was one of the things he loved about her.

"What do you mean?" Zoe asked.

"Well, your body was found in a different place from your friends," Donna explained. "In articles, after the men were caught, they said you kept on fighting back, while the other two girls did what they were told."

Benaiah got uncomfortable and slightly scared. He remembers reading newspaper clippings with Donnas at sleepovers. It scared him for days.

"There were only two men, who are dead now, by the way, they were afraid you would run away and your screaming would attract attention so they shot you and left your body here, then they took your sister and friend to an old shack that used to be in the east side of the woods, and they-"

Benaiah and the guys quickly cut off her story. They knew what happened next and it wasn't pretty, it was absolutely horrible what they did to those girls. Benaiah could feel tears fill his eyes. It was scary back then and still is, but it's more sad than anything else.

Zoe squealed. "So you can find them? You can really find them?"

Donna nodded. "We'll try, their spirits must be where the shack used to be, it's more deep into the forest, so we'll have to leave you for now."

While Donna and Benaiah went off to the side to pick up the littering of wrappers and juice boxes Camden and Alec approached the young girl.

"Hey listen." Camden started, then he turned to Alec.

"Please say something dude, you're the most polite of us two."

Alec smiled charmingly at the young girl. "We're sorry for our constant shouting the woods, we didn't really think anything was out here, we were just trying to scare Benaiah over there."

Zoe smiled back. "It's okay, as long as you help me find my friends, I'll forgive you."

Camden and Alec high fived, then went over to help the other two pick up the litter.

Camden laughed. "Guess I can cross talk to a ghost off my bucket list."

Alec bumped shoulders with him. "Hey, I'm your best friend, when do I get to see this bucket list?"

Camden blushed and shoved him off. "I didn't know we were best friends."

Alec smiled. "Of course we are, I've got no one else you know."

Camden rolled him eyes. "I'm honored."

After they had shoved all the trash into Benaiah's backpack they set off, following Donna deeper into the forest. It was real pretty, the trees started to crowd more making the light streaming into the forest a nice light green. It was shaded and felt slightly colder, they past a small creek with some frogs hopping and birds flying about.

It was beautiful.

Finally they came upon an empty plot of dirt that used to be were the small shack stood, it still had some police tape thrown on the floor. Benaiah suddenly felt scared, this was where two young girls were tortured, and killed. It wasn't right, it was unsettling, it was sad.

Donna started walking up to the plot of dirt and talking to the spirits, to see if they could hear her.

"Hell-ohhh." She belted out to the sky. "Spirits, Louise, Mary Beth?"

They stood still there a whole, looking out at the forest, Benaiah wasn't so sure what he expected to happen but it wasn't this.

After a while if walking around the area and calling out for spirits they began to get desperate. Camden and Alec had plopped themselves down in the square of dirt that used to be the shed and began talking there.

"So, we know your friend and sister, Zoe, she asked us to come here and try to find you guys. She's really sad and alone, please, come out for us."

They waited for a while.

Nothing happened.

Alec frowned. "Guys, look, I can't spend my entire day here, I promised Quinn I'd-"

The wind picked up. Benaiah got a feeling, like, a ghost feeling. He had gotten it when the Ghostie wrappers had spun around them the first day and whenever he saw Zoe. He smiled.

They were here.

In the middle of the circle were two girls, one looked like Zoe, hair put into teeny braids with barrets hung at the bottom, sad, big eyes and chubby cheeks, this must be Louise. The other one was smaller, with two pigtails in her hair and jean overalls, Mary Beth.

"Who are you, how do you know my sister?"

Donna stood up and motioned for the other to do so as well. They were all on their feet surrounding the ghost. The feeling grew stronger in Benaiah, and he grew happier.

"We met her, she stole a bunch of Ghostie from Mr Stanley down the rode."

Mary Beth stepped up. "You didn't see squat, she's gone, you don't think we've looked for her? I haven't seen her in ages, she was my best friend, and you think you can come in here and-"

Louise stopped her and stepped up to them elegantly, Beneiah noticed when she moved the leaves and branches didn't crunch under her.

Must be a ghost thing.

"No, please calm down Mary Beth, please tell us where she is."

"Only a few yards away, come on, we'll take you to her."

"Of course."  Louise whisperd into her palm. "Thank you but its not possible, us ghost can't go outside of the place we were killed, we've tried to explore the forest before and we got transported into the Land of Spirits."

Mary Beth nodded sadly. "It's hopless, and we've tried to look for her in the Land, but it's way to big, there's a billion ghost there, we've never been able to find her."

They all stayed silent for a while, this wasn't what they had planned and it absolutely blowed. But Camden spoke up.

"Well, what I'd we try to meet you guys in the middle, like you walk a little bit and so does Zoe, maybe you'll meet each other before you go back to, erm, that place."

Donna smiled and smacked him on the back. "Mr Brains over here, Beneiah I thought you were supposed to be the smart one."

So they formulated a plan as they walked back over to Zoe, the way back to her wasn't so long so they were hoping that thier insane plan would work, and if it didn't, well, that would suck. But they would try again of course, summer has been so boring, they all felt like they had a purpose now, to help these three girls.

Finally they got back to Zoe and they were able to break the news to her. When she heard the news she was stunned, but she also looked happy. She ran around like a little kid and gave them each hugs.

"Thank you so much!" Tears filled her eyes as she embraced Beneiah. "You guys are the best ever, I'm so happy!"

They told her about thier plan to get them to see each other again, she nodded and listened along, she was bouncy and giddy and it made Beneiah's heart grow, grow? Glow? Both. He was happy as well.

"Ok so me and Donna are gonna stay here and guide you, while Camden and Alec go and help your friends." He explained. "Hopefully it works, I'm going to try with everything I've got!"

Donna snickered and elbowed his side. "Okay anime protagonist, chill, come on, let's start walking."

Everything went fine at first, they were walking fine and nothing was off, Zoe was humming to her hearts content and balancing on logs and skiiping through trees. But then, she started fading.

She looked down at her hand and smiled up at them sadly. "Its okay, let's keeping going."

Finally, in the distant, they saw them, the other two girls also began to fade, they were almost gone, a choked sob erupted from Zoes throat. The others looked on in disbelief as she began to run towards her friends. And they began to run too.

They were fading slowly as they ran towards one another, Beneiah got worried, what if it didn't work. He bite his lip as just inches before they were able to touch each other, they all disappeared.

He feel to his knees. This wasn't what he wanted. Not at all.

Then suddenly.

Boom.

In the middle of the forest where the girls were supposed to meet, like a ripple in a lake, the trees flew back, and a sound busted out from the ground like one they had never heard before. It knocked Donna onto her bottom, and they couldn't even see the boys from the other side of the forest clearing.

But from the dust and the blowing trees he could see three girls standing in the middle of the chaos.

And they were hugging.

After the tiny explosion of dust and trees the quadruplet met the trio in the middle. They were crying and didn't stop hugging.

Beneiah tried to keep his tears from spewing out but he was so happy and so, so relived.

The girls had there color back, actually it looked like they had more color than before, but not quite human, maybe, but not quite.

"Thank you guys so much." Zoe whispered after letting her friends go.

Louise smiled. "We can finally move on, I can feel it, it's time."

Mary Beth rolled her eyes. "Finally, I hope we get reincarnated together, maybe we'll all be baby birds of the same mother."

"Or puppies!" Zoe erupted. "I really like puppies."

They all hugged before the trio had to depart on their epic quest to reincarnation, so their souls could rest and be born new.

Louise turned to the four friends. "Before I go, I must warn you, there's something evil in these woods, something not right, I've been feeling it for a while, and I've never been able to pinpoint what if was."

Alec smiled. "Thanks for telling us, I'm sure we'll be okay, I hope you guys will be to."

She smiled. "Thanks, you have no idea how long I've been waiting to see my sister again, I hope you guys will are safe, don't go talking to any bad spirits, this town is a hot spot for spirit activity, lots of good guys here, but that one bad one seems powerful."

Once they were ready to leave the girls all held hands and their souls intertwined into the sky and bursted off like a pack of fireworks. They all watched from the bottom as they drifted away.

Benaiah smiled softly and held Donna's hand. They all did something good that day, but, it awaken something in them, something that was never meant to be.

But that's a story for another time.
