Romeo and Juliet Review
Scene 1:
Even if I know the story and have read it a few years ago, Shakespeare's speech was still a problem for me. However, the story is compelling, so I tried to overcome it.
I love the fact that he jumps straight to the point. Men from two families meet and are ready to fight due to the rivalry between them.
Soon the fight is about to start but another person comes in and puts a stop. Not long after the battle is about to start again, the prince, the authority of this place along with the heads of the two families come into the scene. The prince's words give us a better idea about the foe between the two families.
However, we quickly realize that there is another issue. The son of Montague, Romeo, is sad and no one knows why. His best friend Benvolio is the one who learns right before the scene ends that Romeo is in love but the girl's name isn't revealed.
Romeo and Benvolio seem to have a strong friendship and Benvolio is loyal to him and the Montague family. He's someone who would do anything for the family but is also the person who stops the fights. Romeo is someone who disagrees with his family's battles.
Scene 2:
In the second scene, the Capulet is talking about his daughter, whose name is not yet revealed, and is giving a little information about her through his speech. Shakespeare cleverly introduces the character without bringing her to the scene. The girl is very young, but ready to marry according to her mother. The parents have found the husband who should make their daughter love him and agree to marry him. Moreover, the Capulet is hosting a feast where his daughter shall be.
However, the poor servant cannot read the list with the guests. Once again cleverly, Shakespeare brings Romeo to the scene as the savior of the servant. By helping him, Romeo learns about the feast and decides to attend it with his friend even if their family isn't welcome.
This scene is smaller than the first but full of information. Everything that happens here is important for everything that will follow.
Scene 3:
In the third scene, we are introduced to Juliet, a very young girl who doesn't wish to get married. This surprises her mother who insists that many girls in Juliet's age are already mothers. She proceeds to say that a woman grows up with the help and the company of a man, reflecting the era's beliefs about marriage and the place of the woman in a marriage.
I didn't like the long speeches in this chapter, and Juliet, even though she seemed interesting regarding her different opinion, was a weak character in general.
Juliet's mother was a character that I disliked from the second chapter, and I disliked her more in this one.
