"I don't want you seeing that tom ever again."

"But Cloverwhisker-!"

"No means no, Ambercloud. I do not want you to see him. Is that clear?"

The russet-brown she-cat looked down at her paws and nodded slowly. She had been in a relationship with Owlwing for about a moon now, however her mother had only just found out. Ambercloud began to leave the warriors den before she stopped and turned around. "Why can't I see him?"

Cloverwhisker sighed and flattened her ears, remembering her ex-best friend and how much she hated her. "Owlwing is Mousetail's son, and Mousetail was my best friend before she took my crush away from me," She explained. The golden colored she-cat wished that her daughter wouldn't ask to tell more about Mousetail; just mentioning that name made her feel sick.

To Cloverwhisker's luck, Ambercloud didn't ask anymore questions. She was shocked that she couldn't be with a tom because his mother was her mother's enemy, but didn't want to argue anymore so she stayed silent. The she-cat exited the den and lay in a patch of flattened grass, away from everyone else. She needed time to process what she needed to do in order for her and Owlwing to stay together.

Several moons had passed since Cloverwhisker's and Ambercloud's conversation. Ambercloud chose to stay with the tom behind her mother's back, but she would have to tell her that she kept it a secret when she would have to tell her that she was pregnant with his kits.

Ambercloud watched as Cloverwhisker returned from a hunting patrol and placed her catch on the fresh-kill pile. Now would be the perfect moment to tell her, with her having nothing important to do now. Ambercloud took in a deep breath, trying to relax herself, then padded over to Cloverwhisker.

Ambercloud approached her mother with a smile. "Hey, Cloverwhisker, could I tell you something?"

Cloverwhisker purred in response. "Of course, my dear. What is it?"

The she-cat sighed to calm down and spoke. "I'm expecting Owlwing's kits!" She exclaimed.

Cloverwhisker was disgusted. After their talk, she thought her daughter would trust her enough to stay away from him. She didn't let her true feelings show and instead flashed a grin. "Really? I'm so happy for you! When are they coming?" She questioned. Her claws dug into the ground, trying not to claw her daughter for not listening to her.

"In a few moons, I think," She answered. Ambercloud was shocked at her mother's reaction, but was relieved that she accepted her decision to stay with Owlwing.

Cloverwhisker purred. "Congratulations! I can't wait to meet them!" She mewed, then padded away to grab some prey from the fresh-kill pile and eat. She picked up a mouse and sat down away from her daughter, eating it silently. As she did so, she planned out how she would get Ambercloud to dislike Owlwing. There was only one way to get her to hate him, and that would require some time.

About one moon later, Cloverwhisker had decided to commence her plan. She approached the white and brown tabby tom, looking as friendly as possible. "Hello, Owlwing. Would you like to go hunting?" She offered.

The tom was surprised by her sudden request; she had never spoken to him and now she wanted to hunt with him. He agreed to it, though, and they headed out into the forest.

The golden she-cat led them into a deep, shadowy part of the forest. She spun around to face the tom. "I'm sorry, but my daughter cannot love you anymore." Suddenly, her claws slashed his throat, killing him instantly. His body dropped to the ground, his eyes now dull and lifeless. Cloverwhisker growled in pleasure that he was now dead and began to make her way back to camp.

"Somebody help! Owlwing, he's.." Her voice trailed off into a sob, tears streaming down her face. She had made it back to camp, acting terrified and sorrowful.

A black tom, the deputy, approached the frightened she-cat. "What happened?" He asked.

Cloverwhisker paused, quickly making up a lie. "We-We were ambushed by rouges. They took his life, but he fought bravely," She spoke.

"Can you take us to him?" The tom requested. She nodded and led him and a few other warriors to his body. They were shocked at the sight of his body, sliced open at the neck. Some of them helped carry him back to camp where they held a mourning. Ambercloud was devastated when she saw his body and lay near his carcass through the night. Cloverwhisker didn't feel guilty for her actions and went to sleep without caring about her daughter's grieving.

Two moons had passed and Ambercloud's kits had been born. "Two she-cats and a tom," The medicine cat purred.

Cloverwhisker looked down at her grandkits and smiled at them, even though she disliked them. They all had their father's brown fur and shared no sign of Ambercloud. "They all look so beautiful," She lied.

Ambercloud purred in response. She flicked her tail at the tom, who was larger than the other she-cats and had Owlwing's exact markings and fur pattern. "I'll name him Owlkit, after his father," She mewed.

A shiver ran down the golden she-cat's spine, but she kept the grin on her face. She pointed her tail at the smallest she-cat, who had brown and white patches. "You could name her Honeykit," She suggested.

"Honeykit's a perfect name. And the last she-cat can be named Doekit," Ambercloud purred.

"Doekit, Honeykit, and Owlkit.." Her voice trailed off as she watched the kits nurse from their mother hungrily. On the outside, Cloverwhisker seemed proud and joyful that her daughter had kits. But deep on the inside, she was angered by them.

A quick excuse allowed her to leave the den and finally get away from the smaller versions of Owlwing. The she-cat entered the warriors den and flopped down on her nest, contemplating whether or not she should do something about them. She settled on leaving them be; perhaps they'd grow to be more like their mother.

The kits were now two moons old, and had recently been allowed to leave the nursery and go into camp. Cloverwhisker, who had recently woken up, was busy cleaning her fur and watching her grandkits.

Doekit had grown into a lively and bouncy young cat, although her sister Honeykit remained quiet and timid. Owlkit was tough and strong, and his large body, which was almost twice as big as his siblings, reflected his personality. They were bounding through the camp, weaving through the legs of the warriors as they chased each other.

Cloverwhisker wanted no part of their playful antics and instead chose to sit as far away from them as possible. She licked her paw and drew it over her ear, then a yawn escaped her maw. Suddenly, she was tackled to the ground by tiny, thorn-sharp claws. Her head looked over her shoulder and saw the three kits pinning her to the ground. She let out a growl as she shook the kits off.

Honeykit was the first to apologize. "W-We're sorry! We didn't mean to run into you like that," She spoke, flustered and awkward.

"Oh, it's okay. Watch where you go next time," Cloverwhisker mewed harshly, sitting up and giving her pelt a few quick licks.

"We will!" They said in unison, then ran off in a different direction.

The golden she-cat hissed under her breath, annoyed at the kits. Even though they apologized every time it happened, they always found a way to irritate her. She could do something about them....

"Doekit, Honeykit, Owlkit!" Cloverwhisker called. They turned their heads and sprinted towards the older warrior. "Could I take you into the forest? You have to promise not to tell your mother," She offered.

They all nodded, a massive smile on all of their faces. The four cats headed out into the forest, the kits admiring everything around them. "Wait, aren't we allowed to only be in the camp?" Doekit said softly to Cloverwhisker.

"I'm sure we could make an exception," She mewed. They reached a small grassy clearing where an abandoned fox den was found. Cloverwhisker turned to face the kits, her claws slowly unsheathing.

The kits looked at the warrior, puzzled by her bloodthirsty expression written on her face. "Why are we here?" Honeykit asked, her tiny body shaking in fear as Cloverwhisker stepped closer to her.

She loomed over them, her dark brown eyes staring at them with a need for revenge. "I'm sorry, but I must do this," She muttered, then sliced open Honeykit's throat. Owlkit and Doekit screeched in horror, but were quickly silenced with teeth sinking into their skin. Cloverwhisker took the bodies of the kits and tossed them into the abandoned fox den, making it look like a fox killed them. The she-cat padded back to camp, showing no sign of her murder.

"Cloverwhisker, have you seen the kits?" Ambercloud questioned, frantically glancing around the camp. Cloverwhisker shook her head in response. The russet-colored queen turned around and began searching each den. Cloverwhisker didn't regret killing her kits; after all, they did drive her mad most of the time. And it was probably best if she wasn't reminded of Mousetail every time she saw them.

After a while of looking, Ambercloud had ordered a patrol to go look for them. She was getting more restless, desperate to find the kits. Cloverwhisker played along and looked as well, acting worried.

At sunset, the bodies of the kits were found in the fox den and taken back to camp by the patrol. "It was a fox. They must have snuck out of the camp and were killed by one," One of the warriors told Ambercloud, who was crying as she stared at her kits.

Cloverwhisker stepped over to her side to comfort her, the she-cat quickly burying her face in her mother's shoulder.

In the evening, a ceremony was held for them, but neither Ambercloud nor Cloverwhisker attended it. Ambercloud lay sobbing in the nursery; Cloverwhisker sitting next to her to keep her company. The moon had just peeked over the tops of the trees when Cloverwhisker let out a yawn, noticing how exhausted she was. She said goodbye to her daughter, then padded out of the nursery and into the warriors' den, sprawling out on her nest. Her brown eyes fluttered close, and she faded into a dream.

Pawsteps from outside woke the sleeping golden she-cat. She lifted her head to glance out of the exit of the warriors' den to see Ambercloud leaving camp in a rush. Slowly and silently, she stood and walked out of the den, following close behind her daughter. Farther and farther they traveled through the forest, Ambercloud still not noticing Cloverwhisker behind her. At last, they paused at the river, Ambercloud staring deep into the rushing waters as Cloverwhisker watched her while hiding in a bush. A sudden thought ran through her mind: was she going to drown herself? A jolt of panic flooded her body and she sprung out of the bushes, startling Ambercloud.

The she-cat spun around, facing her mother. "What are you doing here?" She gasped.

"It doesn't matter! What are you doing here?" Cloverwhisker insisted.

Ambercloud's expression turned furious, yet also showed a hint of despair. "I've lost everything! It feels like there's nothing left to live for," uttered the she-cat. "I-I can't deal with it anymore. Every day it seems like something tragic happens." And on that note, she turned around to face the water.

"Ambercloud, wait!" Cloverwhisker cried out, but it was too late. The queen plummeted into the river, letting the quick waters rush over her head. Cloverwhisker tried to grab her daughter, but she had drifted down too far. She was the one who lost everything, not Ambercloud. She destroyed her life because of hatred of her ex-best friend.
