A Brother's Promise
It was a few days after Cyber's death, everyone was filled with grief. Nicole was silent and just did her work, Kami hid in the lab but didn't work on anything, Shard was quiet and seemed to never joke anymore, and Metal took it the worst. Today was the funeral, everyone was quiet and silent tears fell. The place chosen was lovely, an nice meadow by a tree, along with a stream that sung a small song, and it was sunny. But it did nothing to improve the moods of anyone, especially Metal's.
"Are you going to be alright?" Kami asked Metal a few minutes afterwards, he shook his head.
"No... I need to be alone..." He answered, and with that he left. Shard walked up with his head down.
"It must be the first time he's felt something like this..." He sighed in grief. He looked up at the beautiful blue sky, only reminding him that Cyber never saw the beauty the world had offered.
"Yes, I'll give him time." Kami agreed, she stayed for a moment but left too. Shard who was now alone left also, having nothing to do.
Today was the day that the blue blur stood still for hours in respect. Sonic had realized just how important Cyber was to Metal, it was like him and Tails. Sonic didn't know what he would do if he lost Tails so he put himself in Metal's place. Loosing that one light he had left, so why even keep on going? He had a new respect for the robot, he had lived through hell and fought for what he had. He didn't flinch or say a thing throughout the entire service.
Shard was lost, he had barely known Cyber for a year or so yet this hit him hard. He has no idea what Metal was going through and was confused and traumatized. He saw someone die right before his eyes, he was made to be numb to that yet it horrified him. He often would try to talk with Metal but ended up being mute every time he tried, so he stopped talking. No laughter was heard from him ever since the death, no words also unless he was advising people to leave Metal alone. It would be likely that he wouldn't talk until he got used to the feeling of grief.
Kami now only spoke when spoken to. The cheery smile she always had was wiped off her face, it was replaced with a weak and pathetic one of misery. She wanted to help Metal but she didn't know how, she had tried bringing up some fun times yet it never worked. She was also close to Cyber and was amazed at his abilities that other robots couldn't have, he was like a living person that could never age. Yet she had forgotten that a living person could die from injuries, she was also traumatized when she saw Metal come in with the body. It was depressing to see Cyber's unmoving, cold, empty, and lifeless corpse. She missed him greatly.
Nicole was more strict than usual yet made sure her training never hurt anyone. She couldn't bear to see the look of horror or the pain of anyone anymore. She stayed on her work to keep her mind off of the topic of loss, it somehow found a way to haunt her. She had the image of Metal's empty and unreadable eyes when he trudged in with the news of death. They seemed to be a mixture of loss, emptiness, depression, horror, agony, disbelief, and confusion. She never admitted it but she felt that too but not to the near extent of Metal's. She stayed with him in companionable silence occasionally, but it never lasted anymore than five minutes.
Metal was hurt the most, his only reason to keep going was dead. He seemed emotionless and empty whenever you glanced at him yet inside he was crying. He was quiet, truly was mute like someone had made it so he was unable to speak. He often locked himself in his room and sobbed quietly there. Every time he shut down he still saw the endless smile on Cyber, one that stayed on him until the end. Memories haunted him and never let him be, it was often from the beginning to the end, as if he were reliving it. Yet time seemed to stop when it went on a certain memory.
He was sitting in the virtual reality room, everything seemed so realistic. It was simulating a meadow with tall grass, and a tree by a stream. It was night there and fake crickets chirped. Metal walked up to his little sibling who was in the room. He sat beside him.
"It seems pretty real to me." He commented, the other robot looked at him with unsatisfaction.
"No, it's just deceiving your scanners. It's supposed to look and feel real but I can still smell the factory." He stood up upset.
"Wow, your sensors are more sensitive than I thought." Metal stated. The younger one nodded.
"I'm like an organic, Metal. I'm very sensitive and I can tell this isn't real grass, air, leaves, and such." He grumbled upset.
"I didn't know they were this sensitive."
"I'm different."
"I know, but I can't understand why you would risk being with mobians and being ridiculed, and for what?" Metal asked still not understanding Cyber's passions.
"For the real deal. I don't care if it's safe in here I don't want to live trapped inside walls!!" Cyber punched the virtual tree causing it to glitch and pixelate. "I need a life!"
"You'll get hurt, they won't understand you!" Metal warned. "Will it be worth it?"
"Yes." Cyber answered. "You don't understand, it's unhealthy to be like this. Are you really okay with staying here? Only going out to destroy or kill?" He asked in return. "I want to see the world!" Metal walked over to Cyber's side.
""I just don't want you to get hurt." He replied.
"You can protect me, you have been already by taking on Bolt." Cyber said.
"That's because I promised myself that I'll protect you." Metal responded putting his hands on Cyber's shoulders.
"Can you make another one?" Cyber asked hope fully, Metal nodded. "I want to see the world, everything about it. Leave no stone unturned." Metal would've frowned a bit if he had a mouth at the time.
"I'm not too sure about that, so what about a plan B?" Cyber looked up at him.
"What will that be?" He asked.
"If you can't see the world, then I'll tell you my adventures about it." He hugged his little brother. "To the very last detail." Cyber hugged back.
"Promise..?"
"Promise..."
He finalized.
Metal was now by Cyber's grave a day or so after the funeral. He took out a photo from the promise and sat down in front of it. He held the photos close to him and then placed it down by the grave.
"If you can't see the world, then I'll tell you my adventures about it." He smiled weakly. "To the very last detail."
...
...
"Promise..?"
"Promise..."
