5. Love Mutation
Sabrina understood that Mick still had feelings for her, but how could he when they've never even kissed? That's not completely true, he did kiss her, between her legs, this she remembers vividly. But they had agreed not to speak of it ever again and for two years they had managed to coexist in the same classroom that was Miss Chapmans biology class, without any need for it to be awkward between them. Sure he would look her way sometimes and smile. Perhaps smiling back had been Sabrina's mistake. Had she kept him on a thread for all this time?
"Alright students, listen up!" Miss Chapman announced. It was the first day of exploring mutation cells through a microscope. "Today we are presented with a perfect example of mutations utilized by humans on a daily basis."
Like their classmates, Mick and Sabrina take turns looking through their microscope.
"What you can see is the mutation of an ordinary tomato, infact most tomato breeders use this sort of technique of ripening inhibitor mutation in order to reduce softening of their fruit." There is collective oh's and ah's coming from the students, even Sabrina was slightly exhilarated by the subject. As Miss Chapman finishes drawing a giant tomato on the black board, she is met by a sea of raised hands.
"Yes, Mr Chopra." She points.
"Is it true that mutation is the key to cloning living organisms like animals and humans?"
"In a way, yes." She answered, ignoring the laughter coming from the other students. "But cloning an animal or even a human being is a very complicated task."
"Complicated how?" asked Rahman Chopra, ready to take notes. Miss Chapan does her best not to let him down. "Take this tomate sample for example, the mutation intends to pass on the best qualities in a tomato as a form of breeding. This particular mutation produced firm fruits with delayed ripening effects but decreased nutritional value, color and flavor of the tomato."
"Pardon me Miss Chapman." Rahman coughed. "But what does that have to do with the cloning of animals and humans?"
"Well, can you imagine cloning a full grown sheep and then having it reborn as a baby, but now with the exact same qualities and DNA as a grown sheep? Matter of fact this particular experiment has actually been done before and let me tell you, the state of these cloned animals is not in the healthy state that you can imagine."
"You mean like Benjamin Button?"
A sea of laughter followed Rahman's words and Miss Chapman had to settle down the class. "Yes Mr Chopra, but I suggest that you watch less movies and read more books."
Rahman Chopra returns to his notebook while the rest of the class continue with their tomato breeds. Mick slides the microscope over to Sabrina so that she can have a look next. They had gone like this, back and forth, without acknowledging each other. Mick's unexpected declaration of love, still lingered in the air from the last time that they spoke.
"I forgot to mention." Miss Chapman said, now seated at her desk. "The class will be visiting a vegetable plantation that practices this kind of mutation on fruits and vegetables."
The class turned their heads in excitement.
"You'll work in pairs, a report will be written on a fruit or vegetable of your choice and I want it handed in one week after the visit to the plantation, no exceptions."
"Oh Come on Miss Chapman!" Someone sighs.
"Shit." Sabrina curses, but she has forgotten that there is a lot of free time on her hands along with her absence from the drama club. Once class ends, out of habit her steps are rapid towards the auditorium.
"So which fruit should we write about?" Said Mick, struggling to keep up with her pace as usual.
"I dunno." Sabrina waves nonchalantly. "I don't have time to decide now, perhaps we should just wait and see what fruits they have at the plantation?"
"Why not now, where are you headed?" Mick frowns. Sabrina stops abruptly, angry at having to repeat her busy rehearsal schedule to Mick. Her world pauses once it hits her.
"Do you have to go pick up your little brother?" Mick said, watching Sabrina close her mouth that had come ajar.
"Erh... yes." She said, almost on the verge of tears. How could she have forgotten about her dismissal from the drama club, the worst thing to ever happen to her since playing the wicked witch of the west. "I do have to pick up my brother from school actually. Wouldn't want to keep him waiting." She lied, hoping that would get Mick off her case. She was wrong.
"Alright, maybe I could give you a ride there and then we could study at your place?"
"My place?" Sabrina chuckled. "Why would I invite you to come over to my place?"
"Because we have a report to get started on?" Mick questioned.
"How can we get started on a subject we don't even know about?"
"Easy, we'll google some facts ahead of our visit to the plantation and this way we might know which fruit we would want to look further into. You know, prepare ourselves." He shrugs.
"Wow, you really are into biologi aren't you?" Sabrina said, shaking her head in disbelief. "Mick, feel free to google about whichever fruit or vegetable you like, but you are not coming to my house." And with that she had turned her back on him.
"Miss Parker!" Just the person I've been looking for."
She didn't get very far. At the end of the hallway, awaiting her arrival, stood Principal Harrison.
"Please step into my office." He directed and closed the door behind them. Sabrina took the seat across from his desk and dug through her purse in search of an apple.
"An apple for your thoughts?" She smiled.
"Please Miss Parker, I have a scheduled meeting in an hour, but Mr Schultze wanted me to get a hold of you urgently."
"Gee I wonder why?" Sabrina said, leaning back in her chair.
"He tells me that you have quit the drama club, is this correct?"
"Depends on who's asking?" She said smugly.
"Cut the shenanigans Miss Parker, weren't you the one to tell me of the importance of this year's school play, the preparation that the club was making ahead of some theater festival in Hockenheim?"
"I did." She nods.
"Then why on earth would you quit now?"
"Because they kicked me out, Principal Harrisson!" She cried. "Ask Mr Schultze, the club voted me out themselves."
Principal Harrsion is brought back by her sudden hysteria, Sabrina had almost thrown herself onto his desk. "There, there, Miss Parker. Let us not get ahead of ourselves."
Sabrina digs for a tissue in her purse and takes her time to blow her nose. "I just wanted for us to be great." She sniffled theatrically.
"Well, how come it has come to this?" The principal asks out of sincere concern.
"Mutiny is what it is."
"Mutiny?" He frowned.
"Yes, mutiny." They all held a stake to my back and couldn't wait to take their turn to stab me with it. "Mutiny is what it is."
Principal Harriosson rubs the remainder of his beard as he struggles to cope. "So what you are telling me is that the drama club were the ones to kick you out, not the other way around?"
"Yes, they were all plotting against me, just ask Mr Schultze who basically drove them to it."
"He what?"
Sabrina nods hysterically. "You should have seen the way they all circled me like a school of sharks. And then they took turns to say nasty things about me. I was a nervous wreck once I left the auditorium."
"Is that so?"
"Mhm, just ask Mr Schultze himself, he will tell you."
"I'll see what I can do."
"Yes, yes! See what you can do, the school wouldn't want to lose out on the prize money from the festival, now would we?"
"Five thousand euros." Principal Harrison said dreamingly.
"For both club and school. " She added.
The principal pulls a notebook from the drawer installed in his desk. "Alright Miss Parker, I'll see what I can do, but there are no promises."
"Thank you Principal Harrison, thank you. And don't forget to mention that I want my lead role as Sleeping Beauty back. They gave it to this girl, Paulina. A terrible actor compared to me and don't even get me started on her brother, he is such a....."
"I said no promises Miss Parker." The Principal interrupts. "Don't think I've forgotten Mr Schultze's complaint stating that you drove the other students crazy. Exactly what you are doing to me right now."
"Details, details." She said, waving his words away.
"Feel free to close the door behind you on your way out."
"Will do Principal Harrsion. Feel free to get me that lead role back."
Sabrina left the Principal's office feeling more exhilarating than ever. But once she stepped out into the now empty hallway, she was surprised to see Mick seated on the floor just where she had left him before the principal had swept her away.
"Mick?"
He rises at the sight of her. "Are you alright? What did the principal say, are you in any kind of trouble?"
"No." She chuckled. "But what are you still doing here, classes ended an hour ago?"
"I couldn't just leave you." Mick said, throwing his backpack over his shoulder. They walk towards the exit. "I mean I saw how the principal ambushed you and thought I'd wait around to see if you were okay."
"Why would you do that?" Sabirna frowned, however feeling slightly toasty inside. Mick stopped to look at her, pure astonishment expressed on his face. "What do you mean: why would I do that? You're my friend, my lab partner. Wouldn't you have done the same thing for me?"
"No." Sabrina snorts. Stepping out of the school building they made their way towards the parking lot.
"Oh, how great then, I just wasted an hour of my life on someone who wouldn't even hand me a glass of water if I was on fire."
Sabrina's laughter was unexpected, however it was sincere. "I'm not that evil." The tension between them dialed down. A handful of faculty members were seen making their way towards their vehicles, other than the two of them the school grounds had been deserted.
"I missed my bus home." Sabrina hints. "I'm supposed to pick up my little brother from school."
"Huh, too bad that he has to wait another hour for you to show up." Mick turns his back on her and walks away. Sabrina is left standing with her mouth open.
"Mick!" She gasped.
He turns around with a wide smirk on his face. "I'm kidding, get in."
