Nerf Wars and Softness

So I've seen Endgame and I don't know if I liked it or not. There were aspects that made me very sad and now I'm tired of all the angst, so I'm writing my boys being happy and together and supportive because. Ouch, my soul.

"Buck, Natasha's hit!" Steve sprints over to Bucky, eyeing Natasha as she army-crawls out of the fray, dropping her gun.

Bucky curses and reloads his gun hurriedly, side-eyeing him. "It's just us now," he says, peeking at the opposing team. Thor's friend was brutal as she hailed them mercilessly with foam bullets, and Bucky watches in awe before looking at Steve, waiting for his orders.

"Let's go." Steve grabs his shield, leaps over the parking barrier and charges towards them, harmless pellets bouncing off of his shield. Bucky, fighting back a grin, sprints after him, glad to get his blood pumping again.

"Hey, Buck!" Steve shields him as Wanda swoops down from above, leaving a trail of red in her wake as she showered them with bullets. Luckily, none of them seem to hit their mark, and Bucky hauls Steve around the corner of the building.

"Thanks," Bucky breathes, keeping his eyes on Thor's "Valkyrie" friend. He groans as Carol lands beside her, hair aflame and a grin wide on her face. "They've got Danvers on their side too?"

"'Course, those two go everywhere together," he puffs, busy with his small Nerf gun. Bucky pauses and looks at him, but Steve doesn't seem to draw the same connection.

"What kind of idiots would stay together for that long?" he muses, and Steve glances at him, then smiles.

"Hey, I may be an idiot, but I'm your idiot," he responds before walking back into the field, eyes falling on his target. Bucky rolls his eyes as he watches him walk away.

"Be careful, Steve!"

"Always am!"

Bucky charges into the battle, firing with blazing speed, taking down T'Challa as Sam lands beside him. Steve goes up against Carol.

"Hey," Steve says with a nod of his head, shield at the ready as they stand apart, bullets flying around them. "You know, it's standard for new Avengers to lose a Nerf war."

"Sorry to disappoint, Captain." She tilts her head. "I got someone to win for."

Steve's eyes flicker over to Bucky, then back to her. "May the best Captain win?"

She grins. "Let's do it."

Bucky rolls and misses getting hit by mere inches. Tony, hovering above him, struggles to reload his gun -- it was jamming. Bucky watches for a second, his gun pointed straight at Tony's chest.

"Gimme a sec, Terminator, I just -- need to -- "

Bucky shrugs and shoots, and Tony swerves out of the way, looking scandalized.

"All's fair in love and war," Bucky replies, lifting his gun again. Before the second shot can hit its mark, a foam bullet bounces off of Bucky's chest, and he looks around.

Peter swings by and gives him a salute before taking off again, moving quickly through the air. Bucky mutters a curse in Russian and drops his gun, raising his arms.

"Thanks, kid!"

"No problem, Mr. Stark!"

Bucky sighs and gives Tony a mournful look. "Tony... "

"Don't do it, not with the face," he warns, landing beside him and walking closer. "You lost fair and square." He avoids looking into his misty puppy-dog eyes.

Bucky sniffs dramatically and Tony frowns as he notices that Bucky is teary-eyed. He used this tactic a lot -- Bucky, for all his troubles and dramatics, was a great actor. It was especially fun to use on Tony to try to get his way -- didn't work all the time, but he still found it amusing.

"You know, I was brainwashed for seventy years -- "

"Dead people don't talk, Barnes," Tony announces as he walks him over to the designated "loser" zone -- Natasha looks bored as she leans back against the building, legs crossed as she absently picks at the grass. Bucky pouts and sinks beside her, folding his arms.

"Steve'll be sad," he says, raising an eyebrow. "You want to make Stevie sad?"

Tony grins. "He'll get over it." He walks away. "Love you, Barnes!"

On the other side of the battle, Steve and Carol have disregarded their guns and started hand-to-hand combat, just for the fun of it. Carol rolls them over and pins him, and Steve huffs. Carol notices Brunnhilde watching her with a smile on her face.

"Don't worry, doll, I got this," Carol assures.

"Aww, you guys are so cute," Steve hums. Carol smiles brightly.

"Right? She's great." Then she shoots him in the chest. Sighing, Steve sits up and grabs his shield. Carol grabs his hand and pulls him to his feet, then shakes it.

"Looks like the best Captain won," Steve says. Carol shrugs.

"I'll call it a tie. Good game."

Steve gives a congratulatory nod and jogs over to the loser zone.

"Aww, you too?" Bucky adjusts his position, resting his head against the cool concrete wall of the building. Steve sits beside him, watching the rest of the battle play out. "Well, I guess we're just both idiots."

"That checks out." Steve smiles over at him. Unable to resist, Bucky threads his fingers with Steve's and rests their hands on the ground. Steve squeezes his hand and smiles a little wider. "Once this is over, we should do something."

Bucky raises an eyebrow. "Something like?"

"Anything, really. As long as it's with you," Steve muses, and his honest tone surprises Bucky. He looks at him a moment, when Steve's focused on the game, and he wonders how he got so lucky to be with him. He finally smiles and follows his lead.

In the end, Thor's team remains victorious. Business resumes as normal and Steve and Bucky walk to their room in Avengers compound.

"Aww, those guys are so cute," Brunnhilde says with a small smile as she collects her bullets with Carol, watching the pair walk away hand in hand.

"Right? They're great," Carol replies, smiling back at her.

Bucky pulls Steve onto the bed next to him and drapes half his body over him. Steve, chuckling, holds him close and kisses his forehead.

"Man, an hour of running around and I'm already tired," he mutters and presses his face against Steve's neck, then kisses and marks it. Steve's hand gently grazes his hip and he closes his eyes, smiling a little.

"That's 'cause you're old," he replies, opening an eye and grinning at him as Bucky scowls.

"I'm only one year older than you."

He shrugs and closes his eyes again. "Still." Shaking his head, Bucky kisses him, and Steve kisses back softly.

"I love you, Steve Rogers," he finally muses, carding his fingers through his short hair. Steve smiles at him, eyes warm, his chest swelling with affection.

"I love you too, Bucky. Always you."

I wrote this just now, no real editing, but God my heart needed soft. Whoever has seen Endgame and is emotionally destroyed by it, I dedicate this to you -- to those who have yet to see it, I give you fluff anyway, because we all need it once in a while.
