For Tonight

Bucky was running over the hill, panting for breath. The sun was in his eyes, making it impossible to see anything. He narrowly avoids a tree and ducks down into a bush, hurriedly cocking his gun.

"Come on, come on," Bucky mutters. "Steve, how you looking?"

"Couple guys riding me right now," Steve huffs, running around the side of a cliff and pressing against it. He fires the last few bullets in his gun, knocking three others to the ground, where they remain, struggling to rise again.

He hated this. He hated these missions, outside with nowhere to hide.

"Really? That's some action, Steve."

"Shut up," Steve retorts, checking himself for any weapons he can use. He growls a curse under his breath. "Buck, I'm empty. Got any weapons on you?"

"What kinda question is that?" Bucky scoffs as he starts jogging over to him. Steve keeps a wary eye out.

"Yeah, yeah. Just -- a gun, or something?" Steve asks, ducking down as gunfire explodes over the hill above him. Bucky does the same, breathing hard. He hurriedly pulls out a hand gun and extra ammo, handing it to Steve.

"Be careful, yeah?" Bucky glances at him. Steve rolls his eyes.

"Always," he breathes before running back out into the battlefield, taking shots at heads and chests as he goes.

Bucky watches his back, his head on a swivel as he keeps track of any enemies nearby. His heart was in his throat; he felt nervous energy rising inside him. He fights to remain calm, eyes locked on the blond as he retreats further and further into enemy territory.

There weren't many of them left. Out of Bucky's attack team -- he had suggested to lead this round -- there were five others, not including him and Steve. Their numbers were dangerously low.

Bucky hadn't seen where the rest of them had fallen. They were just gone, dead. Bucky didn't even know their names.

He didn't know if he'd remember them, either.

"How's it going?" Bucky speaks into his headset. No fancy earpieces here. He hears a string of curse words and more gunshots. Amidst that, there's a collection of bombings. Bucky straightens up, chewing on his lip. "Hey, get out of there. I can't have you get hurt, I'm too far away to help."

"Kinda pinned down here -- f***!"

"Whoa, calm down," Bucky replies, starting to sprint over to him, taking cover when he needs. "Just hang on, hang on, I'm coming. Get to cover."

"Can't -- Buck, I'm down."

Bucky forces himself to run faster, his hair falling into his eyes. "Swear to God, Steve, if you've left me here alone..."

"Trying to find cover, but -- s***, there's no getting out of this one."

"You have to try! I'm too far to help you!" he yells into his headset, running as fast as he can. He reaches the top of the hill and surveys the damage. There were barely any fighters left. If he squinted, he could make out the faint shape of a muscular blond crawling on the ground, attempting to get away from his attackers.

"D*** it, Steve," he hisses as he runs towards him. "I'm almost there."

"Bucky, there's someone behind--!"

He doesn't finish his sentence. Bucky stops mid step as a bullet is fired into his stomach, shot from a couple feet away. He staggers to the ground, falling to his hands and knees.

"S***," he gasps, inching his way to Steve.

"Bucky," Steve groans. "Wait -- heal yourself, you've got some bandages, right?"

"No, what about you? I can heal you instead."

"Don't worry about me," Steve says urgently, crawling closer. "Buck, it's gotta be you who -- "

There's another gunshot behind Bucky. He barely has time to shout a warning before he watches helplessly as Steve is shot through the neck, and collapses to the ground.

"Steve, you -- " He cuts himself off, at a loss for words. "You idiot!" he yells. "Why didn't you let me help you, Steve? Why?"

Bucky crawls closer to him, noticing his things which had fallen out. Feeling slightly ashamed, Bucky takes the extra ammo he had had, pausing a moment.

"I'm sorry."

Before anything else happens, Bucky is shot again, and collapses next to Steve.

Bucky drops his controller and shakes his head.

"That's enough Fortnite for tonight."

Steve, pouting at the loss, removes his headphones and places them onto the desk. "We never stood a chance."

"You ran in prematurely," Bucky accuses. Steve rolls his eyes.

"You stole my gear."

"It was all for love," Bucky protests. "I even mourned your death, see?"

"It did sound slightly less robotic than usual," Steve says teasingly. Bucky sticks his tongue out at him.

"Bite me, Rogers."

Steve shrugs. Bucky leans back against the couch and sighs slowly, rubbing his eyes. Steve does the same, lying on his lap and looking up at him.

"Up for round two?"

Bucky rolls his eyes and manages a crooked smile. "As always, doll. Best two out of three?"

"I bet I'll win this round," Steve crows, tilting his chin up. Bucky shakes his head.

"If I win, you take me to dinner."

"And if I win, I get a kiss," Steve bargains. Bucky smirks and they shake on it.

"Deal."

Read it through again, but picture it as Fortnite. If you haven't played/seen the game, I suggest Markiplier's videos. It just came to mind and I wanted to see what I could do with this.

See? They're both alive and flirty. It's all good. <3

Oh, and get it? Get it? "For Tonight"? Say it five times fast.

Long story short: I just had to.
